Did not like

I wrote my review about this hotel back in Feb 2003. We had a bad stay, our room DID have mold in it that would be the old yellow tour second floor with a horrible view of the laundry room buliding and the staff entrance. I do hear the new tower is much better to stay in, we tried but no luck. I will give the fontan some credit that they did address my concerns when I complained to our tour company and they refunded us some money because of the problems we had. Maybe it took a serious complaint for them to correct the problems. I am glad people have been enjoying themselfs. I am not old as per the guy's comment from NJ I still think the entertaiment was so so and the menu is blah. It is an ok for young people. or for a tight budget

Awesome Fontan

For whoever wha rated this hotel a 1 dot and made some complaints i dont know where you expected to go but you went to mexico if your ac didnt work maybe they didnt know and if you said there was mold i think you are mistaking this place for some other hotel if you complained about the entratainment then you must be old and flat out boring the entratainment was very good they were 18 or so in those ages but they were very nice and they tried to help out as much as they could and if you complained about the waiter or waitress or w/e service and said they were too pushy i think you were kind of rude if you didnt leave a tip you would be mad too if you were in their place and any way were you there just to criticize or were you there to have fun i think this was an awesome hotel i strongly recommend it to EVERYONE!!! if you go nhope you have lots and lots of fun

Really Enjoyed the Fontan ....

My husband and I stayed at the Fontan, Ixtapa both in Jan. 2002 and again Jan. 2003 for 2 weeks both times and we enjoyed ourselves very much. Our room was modern, clean, bright and with a wonderful view of the Pacific Ocean. The hotel staff from our wonderful housekeeper Laura, the reception staff, waiters, bell hops etc. etc. were all very friendly and made our stay very enjoyable. No one every asked for a tip or suggested that we never gave one, they only showed great appreciation for what we gave. The food for the first week was kinda the same but the second week was with great change and flare (I found this to be the same at most hotel resorts throughout Mexico). Also, when we were there in Jan. 2002 we met another couple from Ontario who had been going to the Fontan for the past 7 years and planned on continuing, again in Jan. 2002 and again this year we met a retired couple from Chicago who bought a condo at the Fontan over 20 years ago and have been going there for that long, staying for 6 to 8 weeks at a time ........ can't be that bad!! Sorry for anyone who had a bad experience ..... we sure didn't.

Not that bad

This place is OK if you are going to Mexico just for sun, tekila, and some spicy food. The beach is goodroom was clean, not moldy, not stinky. But entertaiment was very poor, even though young enterteiners were trying their best, they are not professional. If you want good service in the restaurant, my advice - choose one waiter and go to him every time (that's what we did), leave him buck each meal and he will do his best. If you do not tip, I guess, they will ignore you.

If you're young...you'll love it!!

We thought this hotel was fun....the room we got was awesome and had no problems whatsoever except for that there was no remote for the tv. Big deal! We never watched it anyways. The view from our room was amazing and the entertainers were awesome. The shows were amature but they were really nice if you took the time to get to know them and they went out of their way to take us out and show us a good time. The two of us that went are both 20 yrs old and female so that was to our advantage since the guys did everything for us. The only thing that we didn't like was the service at La Hacienda. It sucked and was very slow. If you are young and love to party though you will love this place.....the entertainers rock!!

Forget Fontan!!

My husand and I bought a package through Companion Holidays to stay in Ixtapa at the Fontan. I would not recommend this hotel, norCompanion Holidays to ANYONE!!When I approached the Companion Holiday representative Simone about the poor condition of our room, she was quite snippy with me. She said that we shouldn't have expected anything more, as it was at best a 2 star hotel, and if our travel agent hadn't lied to us, we wouldn't be disappointed. As this was the FIRST tropical trip my husband had taken with me, I truly hope that this does not sour him from wanting to travel again. He was not impressed. Considering that we paid the full fare of $1,200 per person (before the special came out), this even rubs more salt into the wound. One would think at the very least you would not have to eat the same boring food everyday, have substantial drinks, not the watered down ones we were given, and be treated to some good, entertainment provided by mature adults, not 18 year olds, who while cute, were just that - cute, mediocre entertainers. And then there was the appalling service by surly waiters. I was actually confronted one evening at La Hacienda, and asked if I had tipped the evening before. As I had tried to tip an earlier evening at the Fiesta and was told no, they were not allowed to take tips, I didn't tip the waiter the first time we were at La Hacienda. Shocked at why I would be asked that question, and concerned that I had inadvertently offended someone, we immediately gave the waiter a very substantial tip to make up for the evening before and the present evening, only to have him disappear and never return!!! We actually had to get up and get our own dessert from the old buffet table, as no one ever came back!! In closing, while I know it is always the custom to ask who is from which country, I must say I was quite offended that the hotel representatives would refer to those tourists from Canada and those who were from Quebec!! But I shouldn't be surprised. She herself was from Quebec!! The ONLY saving grace to this trip was the location. I will be looking at going back to Ixtapa...but not with Companion, nor to the Fontan. While my husband and Ie, my heart really goes out to the young couple who were on their honeymoon. Unfortunately, they will NEVER forget their mistreatment.

Afwul place in more ways than one!

feb/03..just returned from the Fontan and have to say it was disapointing..we got a room that smelled like mildew ..we were then moved to the penthouse suite on top of the roof where the view was incredible but the airconditioning didnt work at all so we spent 6 days sweltering in the heat..and tossing and turning on rock hard beds and pillows..the food was very sub standard with little variety..only 3 kinds of fruit every day and to my frustration there was no guacamole or fresh salsa ever offered..i had to go to the store and buy ingredients to make it myself..the only fish offered was dried out tuna and one day octapus and squid..but the worse part of all was the waiters expectation of getting tips steady!! we were reminded at their so called "good" restaurant that we didnt tip them the previous night..so we felt bad and gave them one and they never served us the rest of the night!! we were getting mad at this point..the entertainment was laughable..5 people 18 yrs old trying to dance and preform...we have been to 2 other all inclusives in the past that were great for the same price..the only thing going for this place is the fabulous beach with no vendors ...but there are many hotels on either side of this place so take some good advice and stay somewhere else....there were no reviews on here before we left otherwise i would have definetly gone to another place...

Same Mildew

from BigBobQ
Same story for us. We checked in the Fontan 2 years ago and found a disgusting room with bad air conditioning, smells, a black streak of mildew down the entire wall in the shower a foot wide, straw hanging from under the beds, a regular pig sty with a whitewash job. Thank God we used Apple Vacations as they got us out of there within the hour. Admitedly we paid exta but the Riviera Beach Hotel was like heaven vs. hell. I wouldn't have my dog stay at the Fontan. It's rundown and unmaintained. I here it satisfies needs of younger Latin American and South American tourists but not middle-aged North Americans. We have standards and evidently the Fontan does not.

Rooms are disgusting
