Last full day in Cairns and it's another scorcher! So we decided to get out of town and for the cheap as chips price of $59 (£33) we hired a car for the day, (we recommend www.sugarland.com.au) to drive up the Queensland coastline to Port Douglas, about an hours drive north. Driving on our side of the car (and road) were a bonus but the real treat …
After settling into my hotel room at about 12:30 and figuring how to turn off the lights, I did the best I could at trying to get a good nights sleep. Unfortunately, the location of my room and the thinness of the walls did not help me achieve this goal.
For some unknown reason, group of people decided to have a long, loud conversation …
Today we checked out of our room and hung around the pool. We did our weekly video chat with A & J
and C & M. Karen says she ready to
go home. She needs the weekly pregnancy
and wedding plan updates from the kids.
I do also! We asked the hotel to
keep our refer bag in their frig until we left.
The leftover ice …
Today we had another nice brekky, then headed to the Sky Rail at around 8:15am. When we got to the Sky Rail we hopped on a mini bus to go to Freshwater station. At Fresh water station we got on a deisel train with old carages. On the train we went through tunnels, saw water falls, went on massive bridges and drove up hill toward Kuranda. The …
We started the day with a great buffet brekky at the restuarant in the resort. I had things like bacon, eggs, hash browns, orange fruit, little sausages and orange juice just to name a few!
After we were all fulll we went in to the city of Cairns. We walked along the esplande and found Muddy's park, Fynn and I played there for about an hour. …

The hotel walls are thin and the curtains do little to keep the light out. The rooms are very sparse but the bed was relatively comfortable.

We stayed here in August 2004, and loved it. I agree the rooms are reminiscent of Butlins, but they are clean, comfortable and equipped with all the necessities. Plus, how much time are you actually going to spend in your room anyway? The resort has a lovely tropical feel to it, and the pools are to die for. Trouble is, we spent so much time out and about, that we never got to spend any time just relaxing at the hotel, which would have been lovely. The staff were all really friendly, and the food was great. You could walk to the Botanical Gardens from the hotel, which are worth a look, but anywhere else would be pushing it. But the shuttle bus is handy, although not that frequent, and taxis are really cheap. For a cheap meal, I recommend getting a Chinese from the nightmarket and eating it on the seafront. We'll definitely go back, and this time we'll reserve at least one day for lounging around the pools!
Definately with the Butlins opinion!
We too stayed here for a night before heading off from Cairns airport. The hotel looked very grand when you arrived but it definately had the holiday camp feel to it! We had been upgraded from the basic room as we were on honeymoon but the room smelt damp and the bathroom was long overdue an overhaul.
We did get complimentary champagne which was nice and the bus to town and the airport was very useful. The staff were friendly but we didn't use any of the facilities so can't comment on this.
Can only say that unless they do a refurb I would avoid it!
Can anyone say 'Butlins'
I'm not sure how this Hotel got 5 stars by anyone.
Although the staff were friendly, the entrance was grand and the service pretty much on the ball, the rooms and general hotel complex are straight out of the "how to look like a 1970s holiday camp" book.
We stayed here on our last night in Cairns because it advertsied itself as close to the airport.
The thing is....every hotel in Cairns is close to the airport as it is such a small city.
If you want a better option at a similar price...try the Lakes Cairns Resort & Spa.....
I'd avoid this place in the future.
A good bet after a long international flight
Very nice hotel for Cairns. The staff is very efficient and helpful -- the price includes airport transfers, as well as city and bus station transfers (till 6:00 p.m.) which makes it slightly more economical than some potential competitors. The rooms were reasonably clean and quiet, though the frig/minibar could have used a scrub. The breakfast, although pricey, and less costly than a previous reviewer stated, was still reasonable for Cairns (especially the cold buffet for $14.50 or so?), after a long international flight with reduced food service. The setting was also pleasantly tropical. I will stay there again the next time I am in Cairns.
I stayed here in June 2004 for 5 nights and had a very good time - its a great hotel.
Stayed here for 5 days in December 2003.
You must stay here
An amazing place. Staff so friendly and lovely surroundings. Our room was huge and beautiful with everything we required and more. Can't wait to visit again!
While the name sounds like an appealing place to be we were disappointed by our stay at the Cairns Colonial Club Resort. Upon arrival the staff was very friendly but the room had much to be desired. There were little ants usually in the bathroom and near the food service area in the room even though we kept it pretty clean.
Fantastic hotel, great staff, lovely time
We have stayed int this hotel 3 times now and would recommend it highly. The staff are friendly, very helpful and good fun. The restaurant is innovative and offers choices for all. The swimming pools (2) are ample and the town is fairly local. the hotel runs a bus to town once an hour all day. Found the travel staff very helpful with excursions. We loved our stays here and wouldnt hesitate in going back, in fact we are going back next year.
Cairns Colonial Club friendly, very nice
Cairns Colonial Club was very nice. The grounds were excellent. The rooms were very nice, however, we had a few minor issues, such as some walls were not perfectly clean and the fan in the bathroom did not work. The staff is excellent. The facilities such as the pool, breakfast buffet were very nice. The tour desk was helpful as well. The dinner buffet could have had more selections, but the food was good. I would stay here again.
