... to pass. All of the tunnels had names; Grassy Knob, Pine Mountain, Devil’s Courthouse. Frying Pan, Pinnacle House and Fort Springs were some of the ones we traversed. Most were fairly short but one was a quarter of a mile in length.

It became evident pretty quickly why folks don’t recommend this road for large RVs. It takes plenty of concentration to drive the hills and curves and the low trees and tunnels just add to the danger. We ...

So even though my milage was fairly low, my morale wasn't great, and it took a couple days to work it back up. The funny thing was, it came back on what was my longest and probably most unpleasant day of hiking so far. I was starting 35 miles outside of Erwin, TN, and Mooch and Ahab were a ...

... I saw the top of its head and back as it moved across the trail over the rise. By the time I made it up, it was already out of view in the trees and brush down the mountain on the side of the trail, and all I got was the sound of it crashing through the woods. Disappointing. Anyway, I eventually came to the place where Mooch, Ahab and I had said was the minimum we would go, but the camping area was sort of a pit, so I just grabbed some water and went another couple miles. Doing so would ...
