Historical Traveler Reviews Hampton Inn Selma / Smithfield I-95

    An OK Experience

    from

I was a guest at the Horizon for four nights in May 2004. I was there attending a convention and business meeting of my national nonprofit organization. I must say that, prior to my arrival, I was apprehensive of staying at the Horizon based upon the reviews posted here. However, my stay proved to be OK - not stellar, but by no means miserable. I arrived at the hotel at noon on a Wednesday and feared having to wait until 4 pm to get a room. However, I was given keys to a nonsmoking room on the 8th floor of the Alpine Tower right away. I had a view of the mountain and not the lake, but was grateful to be able to get into a room quickly and grab some rest after having flown all night. I did not experience the lack of towels, dirty bathrooms, or adjacent guests having screaming sex. My room was smoke-free, quiet, and well-supplied with towels. I did not gamble, so cannot comment on the slots, etc. To get to our convention activities, I did have to walk through the casino which, like the lobby, was fairly smoky at times. The food they served to us was good and I found the staff friendly and helpful. Would I stay here again? Maybe not, but it wouldn't be because of a miserable stay this time.

    BUYER BEWARE!!

    from

Worst ever..If you only read one review let it be this one. Room smells like smoke had 2 small children who hated the stay. Food and service not good.

Bring your own pillows and towels...

    from

The staff is very responsive and friendly; however, it doesn't make for the uncomfortable beds. The pillows were tiny and it felt as if you were sleeping on clouds, and my husband felt as if he were sleeping on bricks. The towels were a tad on the rough side but hey, it'll help those who want to exfoliate their skin. Aside from the negative comments, my friend won $500 in the casino!

    Worst hotel stay ever

    from

The maid service and customer service at this hotel is by far the worst I have ever seen. First night the bed was broken, which I fixed myself without complaining, and then when I climed into bed I found cheetos in my sheets. I called the front desk and was treated rudely. When they finally sent someone up to the room they tried to hand me clean sheets to put on the bed. The next day I came back to my room to find the door left ajar by the maid service, the floor was not vacuumed and they had not replaced the toilet paper. When we called the front desk to complian they were rude and when we finally were able to reach a mannager all they could offer was 2 free passes to the buffett. I would never stay at this facility again and would worn anyone thinking of staying here to not do so the other three casinons nearby seemed much nicer. I am going to contact the travel agency who booked my trip and ask them to take this facility out of their options.

    Great Experience

    from

Just got back from another stay at the Horizon. They always do a good job and everything was teriffic. We stay there 3-4 times a year and have never had any problems

    We stay here every year

    from

We stay at the Horizon every year and have always had excellent rooms and service.

    Stay Away at All Costs

    from

Horizon is terrible. Motel 6 disguised as a Hotel. Non-Smoking room reeked of smoke. Room walls were paper-thin (heard neighbors having screaming during sex; bulldozer outside, and elevator in hall kept us up all night). Room was messy - Houskeeping failed to stock towels one day, soap the next - took 2 hours to deliver soap. Horrible experience, would never stay again.

    Wonderful stay

    from

My wife and I stayed at the casino and hotel in Horizon. We had a great time and loved the room. We had a nice room with a great view. The service was great and we loved our stay. We will be back to stay at the Horizon next time we go.

Not a good experience at The Horizon Casino

    from

i was at the horizon casino and had the worst experiance of my life, I witnessed a patron being attacked in the restraunt, blood flew everywhere we were sitting, thats just the beginning.

as they removed the attacker, the victim was harrassed by the local sheriff's department, and called a lair, as if being attacked was'nt enough and to watch the police and securty working in concert to make this man feel worse, they took his picture and wheeled him out in a wheel chair bleeding and with two black eye's it gets better, after the victim left security was still cleaning up blood of tables and booths with a water bottle(yicks, hepituts ) i left after i saw all of that and did not pay the bill, i will never go there again.... diner beware the Horizan don't care........

    Don't stay at Horizon

    from

Horizon was terrible. Our "non-smoking" room smelled like old cigarettes. The air conditioning system made loud noises at night. Parts of the room were not clean.

The hotel, although renovated in 1994, looks and feels old. From the decor to its upkeep. There is an attempt to try to give the place an "elegant" atmosphere. However, everything just seems so cheap.

Our worst experience was at their Le Grande Buffet restaurant. It was anything but "grande." When I walked in, I was first impressed by the selection of food. However, at closer look, the food did not appear appetizing. Vegetables were dried out, chicken was bland, and spices were heavily applied to other dishes that lacked flavor.

On a positive note, the entire staff was very professional and pleasant. However, that alone would not make me want to go back.

I would advise anyone to pay a little more and stay at Harrah's across the street. Horizon is for those who are on a smaller budget and don't mind the lack of quality.

As we left the city via the Bay Bridge, (ok so it’s no Golden Gate but an amazing bridge in its own right) we were instantly greeted by brilliant sunshine and dry parched hillsides, a real contrast to the foggy green downtown we had just left.

Our drive took us past the cities of Sacramento, Fresno and the famous Zinfandel wine region along ...

... feast. And it is worth it - the lamb is truly delicious, and it feels so good to enjoy a proper meal with real food after a few days of super noodles and camping food.

There are a few other people also planning to hike to Skogar the following day - an American girl and a couple of German guys. The weather forecast for tomorrow is not great but not terrible, but is a lot worse for the day after. So we resolve to complete the hike in one long day. It will be tiring but possible.

After stopping off to pick up Randy, we headed up scenic Mount Rose into the Biggest Little City in the World, Reno, Nevada. Lunch was spent at the California staple, In N Out Burger, where Double Doubles were the burger of choice. Next stop on the tour was the Generator, the community art space where Jenn's brother, Matt, is the executive director. The Generator ...

Getting the Honey Badger in shape takes work! Pete washed and waxed for several days, a section at a time. The biggest project created problems and it isn't finished nor do we know if it can be. That is the installation of the new back up monitor and camera. The monitor went easier than Pete expected but the camera has been a bugger. He can't figure out how to get the old one out! And it is the camera causing an unreliable picture. I've prepared several meals ...
