... bridge tender called us on 09 VHF and said that traffic was light and he'd be happy to let us pass! Of course, we were thrilled to accept his considerate offer. For any bridge -- and especially this one, with a nasty reputation for its sometimes surly operators -- such considerations are rare. Thank you, kind sir! (Tip of the hat)

... way to the Hwy 17 bridge at 8+ knots in the favorable breeze. Maggie did several stints at the helm and is getting the knack of handling the boat. She seems much more at ease doing this now and her earlier tentativeness has been replaced with confidence.

The big news is that we got though the extreme cold --- 23 F --- last night without any consequences. We sealed the boat tightly and broke out sufficient covers so that neither of us were cold and both got a good nights sleep. Many boats left here today headed south. These were the ones with full enclosures and onboard heat, mostly large power yachts. My friend and long time crew, Ron Turner, drove down from Dunn, NC, to lend a hand, specifically ...
