Bear, Deer and Pizza
Started out early as neither Sandy or I could sleep. Roused the kids (Robyn at the time was almost 5 and Alex had just turned 2) and were on the road by 5 AM. Filled up for gas just outside of Woodstock and crossed over the Detroit border by 7:45. Quickly got lost, luckily the Detroit road map pointed us back in the right direction. Grabbed a quick …
Day 20 - Louisville & Lexington - Kentucky
... I met one of the trainers, Bobby Barrett, who was nice enough to stop and pose for a pic for me. Thanks Bobby. And from there it was off to the Churchill Downs Museum to see all the fabulous trophies and walls of winners. They show a quick film about the Kentucky Derby in an incredible oval auditorium where the film rotates around the oval above your head. The sound comes from all directions and you spin and turn on small ...

Two have made it to the safe side of the Appalachia Mountains. One stayed in Marietta, Ohio.
Lexington is a guess, Kentucky is not.

Giddy up
Just pulled into the Horse Park and besides not being able to open my window to pay the parking attendant no real excitement unless you call driving 35 ft of steel boring. We set off around 6:50 this AM from Casa de Strain and made good time. We stopped once at a ...

... here. I almost decided against making the visit. I feel the tug for home, family and things familiar. Once again, I'm glad I stopped. When will I ever be this close to so much music history?
I left there thinking it was time for lunch/dinner and stopped at a nearby mexican restaurant. I've had so much mexican food in the last few weeks I've become fluent in refried beans and enchiladas.

Historical Traveler Reviews Marriott Griffin Gate Resort Lexington
Hair all over the place!
My husband & I stayed at this Marriott for one night - the hotel has a very 1970's feel to it. It is also reminiscent of a family beach-type lodging from the smells and children running around in swimsuits. We arrived very late at night and the check-in process was easy and the staff friendly. But the room was an absolute disgrace. From our first view of the bathroom, there were particles of hair all in the bathrub, on top of the toilet and the counter. We cleaned everything and wiped it down. We were incredibly exhausted and were looking forward to sleeping on the Temperpedic bed. However, once again when we lifted the sheet, there was hair on the bed! We debated if we should call down but because we were so fatiged, we placed a blanket on the bed with the sheet over the fitted sheet. The bed was comfortable and at check-out, we told the clerk about the room and she was nice enough to pay for the room - which we greatly appreciated. But, any AAA 4-star lodging should never have this kind of problem. Overall, we doubt we will stay at this Marriott again.
Very nice time
I stayed twice at this resort beginning of august.
I enjoyed the location that was so easy to find.
Once in the lobby, i was glad it wasn't the typical marble entrance.
Staff was very courteous, even if a bit slow to aknowledge our arrival.
The bedrooms, decorated in green tones felt very countryside like and the best of the best were the matresses.
First night we went to the mansion, food was excellent, not original, but excellent. I had my best creme brulee (in the US) there.
Following nights we had dinner at the garden within the resort.
I wish it was closer to PIttsburgh to go there more often.
Best Hotel In Lexington, KY
We had a wonderful stay at the Marriott Griffin Gate July 23-25! The mgr. on duty when we checked in, (and when we made our reservations) was John, and he was so friendly and welcoming! Everyone from the bell staff to the restaurant staff was SUPER-friendly! The rooms were very recently updated, the carpet and bedding were just like new, and the selection of t.v. channels can't be beat. We had dinner at the Mansion next door, and it was a top-quality dining experience. (the chef even ran 'next door' to get chicken fingers for my 6 yr. old ) The Pegasus Lounge had an awesome band on the Sat. nite of our stay, and we enjoyed the drinks and dance floor. We normally stay at the Ritz Carlton hotels when we travel, and the Marriott G. Gate was top-notch in the areas of updated decor, (while maintaining a vintage feel to the lobby) friendliness and excellent customer service!
Upon my return to chicago, I noticed I had left a library book in my hotel room, & upon calling, Amanda put it right in the mail to me, at NO charge! Highly recommend this hotel.
Among the best Lexington has to offer
I have stayed at Griffin Gate on several occasions--primarily to attend multi-day business conferences. The resort is conveneiently located off I-64 and is a relatively short drive from downtown Lexington....there is plenty of free parking in front of the hotel's main building...the lobby and public areas are spacious and clean ...lots of stone and wood give it a casual, elegant feel....the bar can seem somewhat small--especially if you're with a large group (as has often been the case during my visits)...the food and service at the restautants in the hotel are satisfactory--though not outstanding--typical Marriott hotel dining....the Mansion at Griffin Gate is located on the grounds next to the main hotel building and offers a more up-scale dining experience....the guest rooms I've stayed in have always been clean, spacious and comfortable--many of the rooms have a great view of the 18 hole golf course on the grounds....the hotel also offers indoor and outdoor pools, along with a well-equipped workout room....the conference facilities and staff are excellent and Griffin Gate has always been a popular site for our conferences....however, if you want to enjoy some local off-site dining in the area, you will have to get in your car and drive into central Lexington--most of the restaurants near Griffin Gate are in the fast food or "Cracker Barrel" category (unless, of course, that's what you're looking for).
Nice Facilities at a good price
We had never been to Northern Kentuckey and wanted a clean full service hotel in a good location. The Griffin Gate met and surpassed our expectation. It was modestly priced at $89 and yet had all the facilities and services a person would need. It was neat and clean and looked recently built or renovated. It was central to the Northern Kentuckey area and the service was impeccable. Great place to stay!
Decent hotel, convenient to freeway
We drive between St Louis and Washington DC frequently, and Lexington is an occasional stop-over point. The Marriot location was very convenient for us, just a bit off Rte 64 in a pleasant, somewhat rural-feeling area (the Marriot borders on a large golf-course). The hotel design was "the Jetsons meet the Flintstones" with a combination of stone and sixties modern design--really kind of fun. The front-desk guy was friendly and humorous (we checked in at 2 am) and someone brought a toothbrush and paste up to our room when we were missing one.
The room was quiet, and very pleasant. (Although a very standard room, it was nicely done.) The bed was good--the mattress was made of that "memory foam" stuff used by NASA, so there was none of that "coil imprint on your face when you wake up" stuff you get at, say, Holiday Inn Express. Very comfortable and interesting to try. The only complaint would be the bathroom, which felt like it belonged in a different, cheaper hotel (cracked sink, worn tub, a few small mildew spots on some of the grout right under the shower head -- yep, rm. 342 if you're hotel management), but everything worked fine and the shower was good. Room service breakfast was mediocre but fast. On the whole this was a good experience and I would stay there again, but next time through we'll try another hotel just to compare. (An Embassy Suites is located right across the street.)
The bed was sooo comfortable!
i have stayed here twice, and the second time around was better since they are almost done with their renovations. it looks GREAT inside, the room is very nice and spacious. The bed is one of the most comfortable beds I've slept on, it's one of those new special mattresses. Good variety of fitness room equipment. i tried one of the restaurants and the service was very attentive and the food was good and prices very reasonable for hotel fare.
Ruined an Evening
The beautiful romantic candlelight dinner a deux in our room was interrupted 10 minutes after it was served by a telephone call asking if we were done with the dinner cart yet. A prompt complaint was wholly ignored. This was Valentine's Day 2001 and I am still annoyed.
Great Getaway
Spent the weekend with my family. Very friendly staff. Impressive lobby. Nice pool. Bathroom could have been cleaner. Would recommend.
