... The farming they do here far surpasses any of the efforts made on the other islands of the Bahamas. By the end of the day we were stocked up with two types of mangoes, watermelon, little bananas, pineapples, and limes in abundance. We ate more fruit in one week than we've probably had in three months! All of it was tastier and juicier than any fruit I've ever tasted. One cannot starve on Cat Island! The morning of February 18, 2013 dawned with the previous day's frontal boundary well southeast of us and the signal to depart our cold front refuge in French Bay, San Salvador. ... really HOT. It was not what we had expected.

One day Joanne and I even rented a vehicle (the owner of the Boathouse rents out a SUV). Cat Island is not very big so we were able to explore the whole island in one day.

One particular thing we enjoyed visiting was the Hermitage. At the top of 206 ft Como Hill is Mt. Alvernia Hermitage on Mount Alvernia, the highest point in The Bahamas. This small stone monastery built by ...

... has many old and falling apart houses. We were informed by the locals that Bahamians do not like to tear down old homes because they feel that they are the homes of the spirits. If they were to tear them down, the previous owner would not have a place to return. Ironically, you can sometimes see a nice brand new home and then right beside it a house that is falling apart. Houses are also passed from one family member to another. You never see these houses for ...
