Darjeeling, West Bengal, India danskgirl... but here we lapsed... at +45 Celsius it was worth every penny. Perhaps it was the air-con or the lack of poo to scrap off our shoes each night, we were feeling great and really liking Kolkata. (The only alarming thing was a naked man running around the area.) There were clean restaurants, big markets and nice coffee shops. We walked around, shopped, drank liters of water... We lacked the energy required for ...
Kolkata, India reaandtim... another charity can raise the 200 pounds for it, in other words we can't do much to help! We feel a bit overwhemed and at the moment sitting in the middle of calcutta (where!) and have trepidations of going out onto the street! Bye for now, thinking that we want to find another charity hospital where there are more patients being treated, and can help more. Anyway watch this space! if we are still alive! Love you Sally
Calcutta, India angel1000... catching sight of TV footage showing Saddam's execution. The Bad Since we're on the theme of New Year, I'll just mention the extortionate price of entry and drinks, even at our cosy little bar. Big shock when we ordered two G&Ts and the bill came to around 13 pounds despite the drinks menu claiming otherwise ("ahhh" said the waiter, "special night, special prices"). On the subject of money, tipping is a funny one here. Now I know we're on ...
Kolkata, India tallbird_lankey... there and wondered why we weren't moving three men approached the rear of the taxi and started to push. The hunk of junk vehicle had no starter and needed a push start. After several attempts the engine kicked in, and we were on our way. The chaotic roads and total lack of traffic management turned the twelve kilometer ride to the city center into an hour and a half ride from hell. Exhaust fumes from the vehicle leaked through the ...
Calcutta, India rtwryan... there and 4 days of indian ******** bureaucracy and red tape i got clearance to leave by the 10th May. Sunday i booked my flight to Kathmandu leaving tomorrow and got a 5 bonus days in Calcutta thrown into the bargain. I thought after having spent the last month on beautiful islands that i would really not like the place but i love it. It's reminded me of how great city life can be too. Here you have a mix of the old the new and practically ...
Calcutta, India apeshape... shopping (M: Even as we were walking through the market looking at all of these beautiful things, we kept saying that we were tired of shopping. So, now we're just going to hope that our clothes will be adequate). We then headed out in search of a post office and the place to buy our train ticket to Darjeeling. Walking around Kolkata is an experience. It is definitely not like any other place we have been on this trip, but I have to say that I am so ...
Kolkata, India iben... treated to a few songs, accompanied on the harmonium (piano keyboard boxed instrument with bellows like an accordian which need to be used in conjunction with using the keyboard with your other hand - had a go: good fun, managed to play a couple of my accordian tunes),and a drum played by one of the boys who has partial sight. Music certainly is enjoyed by kids of all ages and abilities and this was clearly in evidence here. One of the girls who has ...
Kolkata, India amgrant... the morning is all his friends who visit him. Some existence. Another visitor outside the flat is 'the cow', or should I say the 'cows'. They come round twice daily and get milked outside the customers house into a shiny metal bucket. Took pictures with my digital camera and showed them to the 'milk man' and his little boy - source of amusement. Showing folk the pictures that I've taken is a great ice-breaker and brings smiles all round. Another man sits outside in the street and ...
