... Before we went to the Soldiers, we visited the workshop where they are made and sold (yes a tourist factory) but it was interesting and no we did not buy a warrior! We had lunch at this workshop which is like a well oiled machine catering for thousands of tourists and the food was very good. ... pea pod boats used by the Tujia trackers. They were quite rickety but our guide promised they were safe. It took four men to row this boat with ten of us in it. Two of the men jumped off the boat and showed us how they used to pull the boats over the Gorge with a bamboo rope. The bamboo ropes are made by the trackers and last about two months. (Now that the River is flooded, they do not need to track any more. When they are not taking tourists on River trips ...

... dirty and as though it had been on display a long, long time. What was really sad was just seeing the oldies sitting rather morosely watching us head back to the boat. Not a smile or laughter amongst them, not even the usual cards or mahjong to keep them socialising. I guess they are paying the Dam price for the whole of china.
