The drive to North Conway in the White Mountains continued and we arrived in enough time to explore the surrounding countryside. It's a snow skiing region with slopes everywhere. Sioux had heard of a place called Jackson about 15 miles away so off we went. I started to sing the song 'I'm Going Down to Jackson' but the words came out to the tune ...

... and people are getting the beach towels out. She laughed in our faces when we asked her if she was too cold and preferred to move somewhere warmer like Florida.

She has been living in the Northeast for her entire life, interestingly enough in West Hartford, Conn., which is the next town over from where I grew up. Kelly's niece Beth flew from California to New York and drove the two of them to Maine.

... to get to the mountain before the morning crowd. To our surprise, the chair lifts didn't start operating until 9:00 a.m., but no matter -- we sat by the fire pit they have at the base of the mountain and patiently waited. We didn't end up getting on the first chair up the mountain, but we settled for the third.

People who don't ski or snowboard may see this program as tiring, dangerous, and/or too challenging. However, we all are here because we love every aspect of the sport and the thrill we get from the mountain.

I actually find it relaxing and therapeutic flying down the slopes with just a piece of wood between me and crushing defeat. There is no better way to spend a day in the winter.
