Historical Traveler Reviews of Furama Danang Resort And Spa Da Nang
5 star hotel with a 2 star staff
from GinaSFCA
I've stayed here twice in the past 6 months, both times in an ocean view studio (not cheap considering one night costs more than what the an employee makes in one month). The main reason I stay here is because it's the nicest resort to central Danang, where my family and friends live. Without a doubt, you can't beat it's location, right on the best beach in Vietnam.
Rooms - the rooms are big and nice, although a renovation is needed. The hardwood floors, linens, open shower, and balcony are all very nice. The housekeeping staff does a good job of keeping the rooms clean each day.
Employees - I often refer to this place as "5 star hotel with a 2 star staff". The front desk people are not polite and never smile. You smile at them and be polite as you may, and they don't reciprocate. There must be something wrong with the front desk staff because the people in Danang are the nicest people you would find anywhere in Vietnam. I've mentioned this to the hotel management during my 1st stay and on my 2nd stay, nothing changed.
Asian or Not - I've noticed (being Vietnamese myself) the hotel treats non-Vietnamese guests better (White/Caucasian). The non-Vietnamese guest will get a pool towel without asking and I have to ask for one! To me, every guests should be treated the same, but that's not the case here.
Food - expensive and not great. I make it a point to call a taxi and drive me in town for dinner rather than eat at the hotel. Better quality food in town and much cheaper.
Unfortunately, until another centrally localed resorts opens in Danang, I have to keep coming back here, mostly for the amenities.
Furama - change in Management
from VNepicurean
We stayed in Furama for two nights for the third time (2001, 2003 & 2003). The value and overall experience has deteriorated and we were disappointed in the management.
Staff - some were haughty and non approachable. They did not smile and greet us. I got off the van and walked toward them smiling. No one responded. They were ill prepared and not trained to provide 5-stars service. For example, there were a group of MIAs checking in after me. Rather than getting all of their fron office staff to cater to all registrants, they told me to go to my room and they will bring all stuff later. They forgot to return my passports, one of my carry-on paintings, etc.
The waiters were very nice and the Beach staffings were all Excellent.
Facility - I got an upgrade Ocean View so I cannot complain of the view. I love the view. However, the facility has not been performing PMs since the wood has not been repainted, things were chipped, the floor was not buffed, the doors were not restained, cracks were on doors, etc.
Food - pizza used to be THE best here. Now, the pizza sucks. IT is full of dough. When we were here in 2001, the food was excellent. Italian food was one of the best that I had tasted in the world. I found out that half of the staff left Furama due to disagreements in how the resort should be run. The head Chef left.
Beach - we love it. If we come back to this resort, it would be due to the beach. It is THE BEST that we have tried. The water is clean and warm but very long stretches of shallow beach in comparison to Nha Trang's beaches.
So-so

I'm an American expat living in Vietnam and I had heard about this resort for a long time so I wanted to try it. It thought it was really overpriced for what it offered. The rooms were average, the bed was confortable but the pillows were so flat that even putting two of them together was not enough. I was also disappointed that there was no bath tub in the room and even with the air condtioner left on 24 hours a day at maximum it was barely enough to cool the room. I stayed from May 25-27 which was not even the hottest time for Da Nang. I cannot imagine if any stayed there in June or July what it would be like because it is really hot in Da Nang then. The food was very overpriced. I had a very tough steak for $21. Fortunately I have friends in Da Nang who took me out to eat and to the supermarket so I didn't have to pay $2 for a can of coke in the room. The place was not too bad it's just not what a 4 or 5 star resort should be. I had a room overlooking the pool and if there were any Vietnamese children and their parents in it then it got very noisy including 6am!! As for the other reviews that I read complaining about the staff didn't want them to walk down the beach past the hotel, it is true that the beach past the hotel on the south end is dangerous. My best friend is a prosecutor in Da Nang and he told me that that area really is very dangerous at night with theft, murder and rape being reported!! Going back to the hotel it was the first resort in Vietnam and it still looks good but not up to 4 and 5 star standards.
A resort to know
from A TripAdvisor Member
Rewarded as 1 of the ten most luxury beach in the world by Forbes Magazine ,Da nang "China Beach" is really wonderful . Furama installations is just on it. This means that you can have the China beach experience, without a stay at Furama resort.
The two levels pool in front of the beach is superb , deep blue heated water ; another one is located in the quiet garden, called "the lagoon" : you can swim here without the view of the sea, protected from the hard sunshine by high trees. Unfortunately, the personnel is not always here to serve you as needed.
Extra services are unfortunately abnormally expensive, Internet connection is nearly free anywhere in the world, except here : 8 USD/hour, without any words to inform you that the access is not free. Breakfast costs about 15 dollars for some bad tasted ham.
The room is cleaned, well designed, but just correct for the price. Be careful when you leave, the personnel can visit it any time during the day. It can be interpreted as in intrusion to your private life as you are not informed about this.
The hotel is located far from Danang's center, so displacement is not really practical (the taxi cost to the center is about 5USD) . If you are honeymooners, looking for tranquility far from the World, then Furama is a perfect place, but if you desire to visit the country , meet people and eat great food at reasonnable cost, this is not the right place.
This resort claims to be one of the best resort in VietNam : it didn't give me great impression compared to other normal place at 60USD/day
Corporate Dollar Rules
from Chris and Mary Ann
You will have to take this review on balance with others from people that had a more satisfying experience.
We were to stay three nights at the Furama in Danang but checked out a night early due to the congestion of large groups at the hotel. This hotel has sold out to the corporate dollar and encourages day trippers as well. On both days the front pool was closed to all guests other than those from particular firms that had booked the pool. On one morning neither pool was available to regular guests for the same reason.
The second night was a corker, the whole front beach side area of the hotel was devoted to the corporates and the music played so loud that it must have ruined the prospects of the fishing boats out at sea! It did stop though at a reasonable hour (fortunately)
When told we were checking out early the manager became defensive and threatened to keep our pre-paid last night's money although that didn't eventuate on check out.
This is a three to four star hotel with passable rooms and facilities that has no concept of guest relations.
Although individual staff members were very pleasant and the restaurant was first class take the hint, if you want a good beach holiday in a real 5 star property, go to Malaysia
Not recommended for a beach holiday
from A TripAdvisor Member
I chose this hotel as a base to explore Hue and Hoi An, but also to spend a few days by the beach.
However, I would certainly not recommend this hotel for a beach holiday, at least during the season I stayed there (Sep 05). The waves were too strong to enjoy the sea or swim. The water quality was dubious, judging from the items of plastic and tissues floating around. I guess this is not surprising, given that the hotel is close to Vietnam's third largest city and its effluents. Danang itself is a rather soulless place, with dull modern architecture and the first signs of modest affluence representative of the emerging Vietnamese economy.
The beach itself is wide, sandy and goes on forever, so I would have liked to take long walks or jogs. However, there are hotel guards discouraging guests from leaving the hotel beach. I disregarded them and tried to venture out a bit, but I must admit I did not feel comfortable as suddenly kids started emerging from behind the dunes and approached me, so I soon went back to the hotel.
The hotel is largely surrounded by undeveloped land and the beginnings of the Danang suburbs, which look rather desolate, and there are new roads being built. Whilst there was no noise from any construction work, the surroundings are not exactly attractive. There are local stalls right outside the hotel which can wash your clothes. They charged US$15 for a large bag of items, not cheap by local standards, but much better than the hotel charges.
The hotel itself was not bad. The room was quite spacious with a nice bathroom, but the beds weren't that comfortable and the bedroom decor was not really five star. The gym was small and badly equipped with a constantly faulty stereo system. On the plus side, the restaurants and lounge were nice and the food generally good and varied. The infinity pools were very attractive.
Staff were nice and helpful overall.
There is a free shuttle bus to Hoi An and other local attractions, which was great. I also tried twice to book a group tour to Hue organised by the hotel, but due to lack of other participants these tours were cancelled and unfortunately I was only informed at a very late stage. I guess this reflects the fact that most hotel guests were business travellers.
From what other travelers have told me, there are probably equally attractive but less expensive hotels around Hue or Hoi An, so if you want to visit these places, these might be a better option than the Furama.
Great in the sun
from mhstrass
This hotel is run by the furama group which has a good reputation for well organized and well run properties.
The furama resort lived up to my expectations for the most part. The rooms are a bit dated but I can overlook this as they are clean and well maintained
The hotel is located on china beach and this is a fantastic location....if it is sunny. If it is not sunny but cold and cloudy as it can be in early jan...you have just wasted your money.
The location is close enough to Hoi An to get there in forty min. It is reasonably close to My Son to get there in an hour. Both are south of the resort. Hue is two hours north of the hotel and also worth the trip
Thus if it is sunny stay at the furama and take a day off of touring to soak up the sun. If it is cloudy stay in Hoi An at any of the four star resorts or hotels and save your money.
Finally while in Hoi An go the the Cargo Club to eat. It is definately much better than the other restaurants in town. For a special treat sit on the balcony overlooking the river...the restaurnt faces the street on one side and the river on the other
Enjoyed My Stay at Furama
from cng343
I really liked my stay at the Furama. THe pools were gorgeous... we had the Lagoon Pool all to ourselves. The rooms were beautiful..high ceiling, balcony overlooking pool and beach. Spa was not as impressive. Tried to make an appointment for three but it seems there wasn't enough people?!?! A little amazing considering how many people were probably staying at the hotel at the time. I enjoyed the business center to check email, but the internet took sooo incredibly long to load that all prices for the computers were lowered due to the long waits. The weather was to gloomy and windy for the beach unfortunately which was extrememly annoying. No one was allowed in the water and you wouldn't have wanted to stay on the beach. When we tried to take a walk down by the water and man stopped us and told us to go no further...which was odd! the beach kept going! There was another man at the other end of the beach to. I see another reviewer had the same problem. ALthough there were some problems I found the hotel really nice and definitely the nicest in the area.
I always feel like...somebody's watching me

I can't say I recommend this place, despite it being supposedly the best hotel in Vietnam.
The hotel posts security staff to make sure you're always on the hotel grounds and paying full price for their drinks and food, some of the priciest in Vietnam. Having traveled throughout Vietnam before arriving in Da Nang, I can assure you that a drink does not cost $6 in Vietnam (nor is it charged consistently in USD). I tried to take a beach walk at night under a full moon, and was stopped by hotel staff on both sides of the beach who insisted it was dangerous to walk any further on the beach at night because I wouldn't able to see (note that under a full moon it would be impossible NOT to see). The same thing happened during daylight hours -- hotel staff were posted at the property boundaries to keep guests from wandering into the next restaurant, where prices were cheaper.
This constant surveillance leads to temptation and theft; the staff stole a digital camera from our room when it was left out (we didn't realize that staff would be in and out of the room all day). I left the balcony doors open to let air circulate in the room, and the hotel sent staff in to close the doors, so clearly the place was under constant surveillance. The staff later that night stole the camera -- must have known it was there from previous visits.
The spa in this hotel is also terrible. When I made my appointment, the spa insisted they only had time for a 45 minute full-body massage, and gave me a 43-minute massage, yet they charged me for a 1-hour massage when I left. My foot massage was desultory at best. It was supposed to last 45 minutes, and instead lasted 14 minutes; yet I was still charged full price even though I protested.
I spoke with an American tourist who told me she'd been coming to the resort for eight years because it was the only option, but that she'd leave the moment another decent resort was built in Da Nang. I agree. I won't be going back to Da Nang until there's another option. I'm a good $300 short --$300 that I shouldn't have been short (theft and fraudulent spa charges) -- after staying at this resort.
A great 5* palace!

I've been into that hotel in Sept. 2002.
THE HOTEL: It is a magnificent hotel, located on a great and beautiful beach. You will be compltetely alone on that beach, as there is only this hotel, and no other!
The beach is huge, and very nice. You'll find a place to relax everywhere, such as in the great main pool. Or on the hammocks hung between the palm trees on the beach, a bit away from the noise.
The restaurants there are really good, but be careful. You'll pay one month's vietnamese salary for one dinner. We were four and ate pizza, a starter, and a bottle of wine, and paid over 150 dollars! But the breakfasts are really excellent.
The rooms are very high quality, with really beautiful ocean side view for some, garden view for the others.
Highly recommend it if you're going though that place!
