      Exploring Boundary Waters

      ... comfort.

We watched the bears during their feeding time and they seemed like intelligent creatures who given half the chance would take a peanut over a human, though I am still wary of them.

Next stop was the International Wolf Centre to learn more about these other misunderstood creatures. Whilst we had not spotted any in the wild during our national park odyssey they had probably spotted ...

      Minneapolis to Ely

      ... in car feed.

Our destination being the town of Ely, which sits on the edge of an area called Boundary Waters, a series of lakes that are great for canoeing and spotting wildlife as well as serving as the border between the US and Canada.

It was in the high 50's when we arrived and raining, so no outdoor activities for us today. Headed off to the local steakhouse for some cow.

Spent five nights near Ely in the Boundary Waters Canoe area. The first was in the bunkhouse at the outfitters. Lot's of mosquitoes and tales of it being "worst ever" for them! Turns out once we got going it was manageable. The first day we canoed three times with portages over land three times. This involved carrying all the gear including canoes. Fortunately they were high tech Kevlar once making ...

A travel blog entry by walters1939 on Jun 20, 2012

Well, it was bound to happen. The trip so far has been without problems. All that changed yesterday when I tried to traverse the city of Duluth on my way to Virginia, Mn.. Got caught in high water and believe my engine is hydrolocked. Will find out shortly when I go over to the mechanics. This could be the end of the trip. Even if not don't know how I will get to Virginia as most of the roads north are closed. More to ...

We caught TONS of giant smallmouth bass! The weather was decent, except for a couple of super windy days. We managed to avoid any bears or scary wildlife...just lots of chipmunks! As usual, the scenery was great. There's just something so cool about nature that's virtually untouched by man.
