The location is very special and the views are magnificent. This hotel is styled on an old Scottish castle. Very impressive but absolutely huge and much larger than any castle we have come across in Scotland! Our room was large and comfortable with all the expected facilities. Unfortunately they weren't very good at topping up tissues, toilet paper and tea bags but we have noticed the same problem at the other Fairmont hotels we have stayed in during our visit to Canada. There is a fantastic array of restaurants, but don't set your heart on dining in any particular one of them because you are more likely than not to find it is closed for a function! Nevertheless we enjoyed our stay very much. The service was generally very good and the servers polite and friendly. The overall feel was historic and a bit special, well worth a visit.

This hotel is amazing. Our first room was 220 sq ft and too small. Then we upgraded and felt much better. Staff is great, views fabulous, and food is very good.

This is an amazing place to stay, steeped in 125 years of history and beautifully maintained and restored. The Fairmont Banff Springs is a castle with magnificent views, specialty shops and 7 restaurants. The staff were great and quite a few of them are Aussies.

This is an amazing hotel, rooms large, amazing views of the Rockies. Outdoor heated pool to relax in while soaking I. The incredible scenery.
Every sort of shop and restraint is here too, 15 min walk, or a bus out front, to the centre of town

Calgary to Banff in the Rocky Mountains

Last night we stayed in a stunning five star hotel in Calgary - the Fairmont Palliser Hotel. It was very posh. The rooms were enormous, probably the largest hotel room I've ever seen, the dining room was exquisite. We felt a tad like the country bumpkins from the bush coming to town. We only had time for a fairly quick look around the city centre …

Had buffet breakfast in Bow Valley Grill which was pretty nice but not very warm. We then caught a bus into town and dropped our washing off. I bought the boots I'd tried on last night then we went for more of a wander.

Matt caught bus to Banff Hot Springs to sit in the water with a nice view to try and help his back while I wandered the …

Early morning start to catch the bus to our 'free choice excursion' - we chose the 12 minute helicopter flight and paid to upgrade to 30 minutes so we would get a good look. We love helicopter flying as the view is so good. Amazing going into the Rockies with snow, glaciers and beautiful coloured pools.

Bright and early this morning - 6.15 on the bus - breakfast will be on the Rocky Mountaineer. Twelve carriages today - 400 people, part of yesterday's train went off to Jasper - we are heading to Banff. Landscape changed as soon as we got out of Kamloops - civilisation along the way, some irrigation and the trees started to appear again, so a much …
