It seems like the volunteer stint was done in the blink of an eye. Our first week seemed a little slow, but the last two just flew by. Thursday was our last day with the kids, and we had wanted to do something special with them. We had a few ideas, but still needed to decide what to do of that evening. We brought them to school that morning as …

After taking about 2 1/2 hours to travel about 15km to get out of Kathmandu's crazy traffic and another leech attack later, we finally arrived at Chitwan National Park where we are off to see the Elephants etc tomorrow. I have had 2 leech attacks now. The little buggers latch on mainly on you feet and suck your blood …

I wondered where I should go after Kathmandu for a long time, because I had only five days in Nepal. The options included Pokhara, Bhaktapur and Chitwan N.P. I had heard Pokhara is the second most popular destination next to Kathmandu, so it looked attractive, but I am an animal lover. So my choice was Chitwan National Park.

DAY 4 Kathmandu to Sauraha (Chitwan) It was an early start to jump on the bus to Sauraha (a small town next to Chitwan National Park). After 5 hours of amazing views of rice fields, villages tucked into the sides of mountains, rivers and many looks from the locals, we reached our destination. We stayed at Eden Jungle Resort a really nice resort …

6am start again (this is now just the normal wake up hour for us) for the 7am bus to Chitwan National Park. We arrived at the town Sauraha and got collected from the bus yard in a 100 year old jeep sent from Eden lodge resort, my god it's hot here!! We saw an elephant being ridden down the road on the way to the resort- interesting already! We …

Great staff and rangers, very friendly and knowledgeable. Laxman is a standout guide, an excellent tracker and very passionate about Chitwan National Park.
Rooms are old and in desperate need of renovation. They have a large ceiling fan but no air con and power cuts are frequent but normal for this part of the world. The beds are a little firm but the rooms were clean. Food in the bar is good but limited in flavour and variety, catering to a wide range of nationalities and tastes it must be difficult in a small kitchen.
The resort offers jungle treks with the chance of seeing Rhino, Crocs, Snakes, Spotted Deere and many, many birds and insect species. On our walk we saw Tiger tracks!
Canoeing down the river is an experience, dug out canoes that are hair raising in places!
Elephant safaris are highly recommended although you do need to quiet to have any chance of seeing wildlife, try to avoid going in a large group. Be armed with bananas for the elephants and mosquito repellent for the blood suckers!
All in all it's a great budget resort with heaps to do around the park.

this is a budget place so dont expect too much. Rooms are good size and as clean as you can expect bearing in mind location and costs. No hot water but you get used to the cold. The food is pretty grim and they try and force you to eat at fixed times. If there is a group there, which seems to be often, dont bother trying to get served, it will be hours and the staff will do their best to ignore you. There are better eating places just a few minutes walk from the lodge. We found the guided tours very expensive and we hardly saw any wildlife though we were there late August which is a bad time to visit.
