Underberg Rd Underberg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, 3251, 31-3374222
With an early start we left Durban and traveled to the Royal Natal National Park and the mighty Drakenburg escarpment. Our accommodation was in chalets at the Drakensville Berg Resort where we arrived at approximately 1:00, had lunch and then did the laundry. As we could hear thunder and the skies threatened rain, we decided not to try to go horseback riding. However, Lotta rounded almost everyone up for a mini-golf tournament before dinner. As we sat in a semi-circle around our truck for din...

The massive wolfhounds were quick to sort him out though, barking at him til he crept away again.

We also drove through the local village where we saw close up how these people live and wow what an eye opener. Here I saw young black children, they looked really happy and seemed quite content with their lives with their pet dogs and the clothes on their backs but you just knew that had no idea what else was out there in this world of ours! Most ...
Sani Pass, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa mbsteve... Berg, at a lodge that Kat, our friend from Coffee Bay, had recommended. The guest house is famous for its horses. Then we had planned to move on to the northern part of the mountain range.

When we arrived at the lodge, they were out of budget rooms, but the rest of their rooms were empty so they offered us a rondeval at the budget price. A Rondeval is a type of round hut that dots the South African countryside. The Rondeval was a 15 ...
Underberg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa kickthrough... but in JPG format. but.... i forgot to focus the cam, after the first pic, so obviously, having returned home the pics were blured. back into the 4×4 to Kenmo now for the third time to take the by now very familiar scenery yet again. On the way out, I got stuck in the mud, so 4×4 had to be engaged, to extract a very muddy Toyota. At least this time I had better photographic success, at least! Been a busy week in the B&B ...
Underberg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa pileinn... storm over the mountains. The view was incredible from the house. I did not have my tripod but I made one with my body and photographed the lightening over the mountains. I think I did pretty well for hand holding the camera with such a slow shutter speed. I've always wanted to photograph lightening, therefore I was excited with the results!
Sani Pass, Lesotho whitneyhl... the early 19th century, when the English fought the Boers in the region. The short introduction to local language elements (which for us are physically challenging to impossible) the footpath back was much shorter. On the way we have seen a rare specie ...
Underberg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa silo... same time. The border guard trusted us just to leave when we were ready and not wander off or get locked in overnight like we nearly did in Swaziland later during the trip. There really wasn't a lot to see inside of the border except the resplendant scenery, Oh and ONLY THE HIGHEST PUB IN AFRICA! How sweet was that. The food was pretty good. We had the river trout and curry. Plus some Maluti premium Lager. Of course I ...
Sani Pass, Lesotho woolly... is famous for an incident early in the life of Mahatma Gandhi, wherein he was thrown off a train for riding in the first class carriage, which Indians were barred from. This incident inspired Gandhi to begin his career protesting against laws discriminating against Indians in South Africa. Today, a bronze statue of Gandhi stands in Church Street, in the city centre. Stayed at Umphiti Backpackers in Bruver Street. One of ...
Pietermaritzburg, South Africa yfjell... 1200 GS, which, mind you, was not really made to race down sani pass. I was just starting to enjoy my ride down, and was nearing the bottom of the pass, when i decided to take a rain check, and see where Terence was. Alas, he did not turn up behind me. I waited for 5 min, and then, fearing the worst, headed back up to look for him. I found him, looking thoroughly disgruntled ...
Underberg (Heimville), South Africa bonovasa... Basotho ponies and are used all over the Lesotho highlands. A suggested to Erica we did a multiday trek on these ponies up in the highlands, but she though it was wise to quit while ahead - who am I to argue. We got some lovely smoked local trout for dinner that evening that we cooked with Alfredo pasta. We polished it off with a nice bottle of wine watching the fantastic sunset.
