Just back from a couple of lazy days on the beach, in a French-run resort. No beach boys!!! The more energetic amongst us did a bit of kayaking. I found a hammock under the trees, and read Oliver's book, having already read all the books I brought with me. Oliver is trying to read one of mine, but finds the number of adjectives extremely irritating. I think he has learned some new words though!
The food and the air conditioning were good, although we have become unaccustomed to the almost ...

a drawer and proceeded to randomly cut freestyle with no comb or fingers! Somehow he managed to do a reasonable job and I
left happy!
- for those of you who are yet to experience the african yes, let me explain...if you ask an african if he or she can do
something for you, and they have no idea what you are saying, their response will always be "yeees", followed by a blank ...
... because they are not supposed to drink it, being Muslims. I am often asked who I support and (although tempted to reply: "two children and a Zanzibari rat") I now say "Arsenal" but only because it was the first team that came into my mind. I can also stun them by telling them that I know that Henry Joseph, a Tanzanian footballer, now plays for Norway (a taxi driver told me this the first day I arrived).

... while on vacation versus going up in diving certifications. We made it back in plenty of time to get some lunch and some beach time in. Afterwards, I went to find a pull-up bar so I could do my workout routine while I was feeling good. I walked everywhere and could really only find a slanted coconut tree on the beach. I would prefer to not do it in public so all the locals wouldn’t have to sit and stare, but as long as I got to workout, that was all ...
Zanzibar, Zanzibar Archipelago, Tanzania travel_lover87... today is still not accepted by the people in his homeland or by Tanzanians.
We spend some time wandering the small, twisting, narrow alleyways that interconnect throughout central Stone Town. There are shops and services all crowded together along each side of the alleyway which can only be about 3 m. (10 ft.) wide. Given the tight turns and narrowness, no cars can negotiate these roads, just bicycles and motorcycles.

“Why not? I would.”
“These people are disgusting. They are liars and hypocrites. They don’t like us, and we don’t like them. They think they are better, different. And they are very dirt headed”.
“Dirty minded?”
“Yes, like that”.
We stopped to buy fruit. I wanted to taste an exotic looking one that seemed half watermelon, half hedgehog. On learning the ...

( You can imagine the hilarity that ensued when Jessica and I first felt these little suckers brush up against our skin ) Apparently, you can pay a ****-load of your hard earned cash in posh North American Spas to get this type of 'fish friendly' pedicure - I've seen pictures of it. Here we were, getting the real experience while delicately sipping Konyagi (local liquor) spiked Mango juice at 2pm on a Tuesday. Overhead ...
Kendwa, Zanzibar, Tanzania ebowley... we learned it was a wedding). Duncan and I squatted down against the wall of a nearby house, trying to appear respectfully interested but discreet. Duncan was nervous as he is very conscious of being perceived as an intruder. Fortunately, we had a series of older women who were nearby come up to us smiling, greeting us and obviously welcoming us to watch. It was wonderful just to take in the local atmosphere, listen to the Swahili music and witness a village ...
Zanzibar, Zanzibar Archipelago, Tanzania ayack... on the pristine, white, Zanzibari beach. At least it was white and pristine until the tree line, which is where it became a rubbish heap. The water was really lovely after the heat of the day, and I thought I'd really love to go sit on a beach and be able to get in the water whenever the fancy took me. Alas, it was not to be. Prices at the beach are outrageous, when you can find a place with room. We'll just stay in Stone Town, then. It's a lovely place to be. Erin
