HELLO East Coast!

Up at 445am today. The earliest rise this trip. It was for a good reason! Hot air ballooning! Something else I've never done but decided when will I get the chance to watch the sun rise over the desert in the outback again? Really smooth ride, only you head does get really hot so you need to cover it up. The also supplied us with brekkie- the most random brekkie ever! We had a chicken leg, pizza thing, fruit, crackers/cheese, chocolate cake and champagne. Which one again a little bit was gone...

But I never get Sea Sick

Somewhat early rise to head out to the reef. Definitily had a hangover for this one. After 5 minutes on the boat I was ready to get off. Sea was really rough, so rough it was almost cancelled, and is only that rough maybe 1% of the time. I don't get sea sick, but this boat had eveyone feeling out of it. Got to Marine World 1.5 hours later and couldn't be happier. After a while I got my snorkelling gear on and head to convince myself to get out there.

Snorkelling = my biggest fear. Peo...

If I survive today it is a MIRACLE!

Woken up at 8am by Colin. They wanted to change my skydiving time from 9am to 830. Since I was woken up I figured why not.

If you get the chance to go Skydiving do it! The best experience of my life. Never would have been able to do it on my own, thankfully it was Tadem and I had a really cool guy with me who knew what he was doing. The video is one of the funniest things you will ever see! So glad I decided to do that.

Did some laundry and just chilled until it was time for b...

EAST COAST TOUR

31st May - This morning was the GREAT BARRIER REEF!!! We got taken to the port and put on this BUMPY AS boat. Nearly everyone was sick and it was soooooo ridiculously rough water. Then we arrived at the Outer Reef. Blake was our diving instructor. We did our first dive together and we held fish and sea caterpillars. Then after that we snorkelled, had an awesome lunch - LASAGNE! Then we tried to do a second dive together, but I couldn't equalise my ears properly (had a blocked nose) and so had...

The Cairns Colonial Club (pronounced 'cans' as in "two Cairns of beer please") reminded me of the Hotel Oasis in Cairo, it had a tropical feel with plenty of Palm trees and gardens, and a bar by the pool. The room was big, but run down. It looked like it was renovated 10 years ago and nothing replaced. I don't spend much time in rooms anyway so it didn't bother me, I just wish the bed was comfortable. I could have booked a different hotel, but that was where the Contiki tour started and I ass...

Bear Hugs

Ok, so yesterday was a very long day for us, thus no real post. I know, tragic...I bet you all felt incomplete yesterday when you had nothing to read from us. I'll try not to let it happen again, but no promises. Yesterday morning, we cleaned up Babs (in fact, she never looked better) and turned her into the Maui Rentals office near the Christchurch Airport. Because we had to be out of the RV park by 10 AM, this meant we were about 4 hours early to the airport. But, that turned out to be a go...

Day 3- where's the time going!! Another flight....

We soon landed in the morning and made our way quickly through the modern airport. (Very nice!) The sun was just coming up over the airport and I wish I took some pictures. I tried to call home saying that I was in Australia but soon found that even with a calling card I will never be able to easily all home.
So we waiting in a large circle and talked for our NEXT flight to Cairns (pronounced Cannes). In time the plane came. This flight was really short. By now I was getting tired of plan...

The Great Barrier Reef

Waking up and having an early morning breakfast at the hotel, we boarded the bus which took us to the harbor where a boat was waiting for us and a lot of other people to take us to The Great Barrier Reef.
The boat ride was horrible, I brought motion sickness pills but thought that I didn't have to take them because I don't get seasick very easily. How wrong could I ever be! Our captain even told us that it is always a bumpy ride and there are ginger pills just in case (ginger calms your s...

Arrived in Cairns - just before the big wet to a warm and humid welcome. Mo had keenly spotted the colonial club at a great rate of 50 AD per night - so checked in. First day spent travelling on the scenic railway to Kuranda - rainforest walks and a boat trip to feed the turtles. Second a look around the town - celebrate chinese new year and Aussie day both on the same day!! Final day spent looking at fish on the great barrier reef - disturbing nemo's friends - hassling rays and Mo's favourit...

Historical Traveler Reviews of Colonial Club Resort Cairns

Wish I could have stayed longer

from Vix77
We stayed here in August 2004, and loved it. I agree the rooms are reminiscent of Butlins, but they are clean, comfortable and equipped with all the necessities. Plus, how much time are you actually going to spend in your room anyway? The resort has a lovely tropical feel to it, and the pools are to die for. Trouble is, we spent so much time out and about, that we never got to spend any time just relaxing at the hotel, which would have been lovely. The staff were all really friendly, and the food was great. You could walk to the Botanical Gardens from the hotel, which are worth a look, but anywhere else would be pushing it. But the shuttle bus is handy, although not that frequent, and taxis are really cheap. For a cheap meal, I recommend getting a Chinese from the nightmarket and eating it on the seafront. We'll definitely go back, and this time we'll reserve at least one day for lounging around the pools!

Definately with the Butlins opinion!

from Member777
We too stayed here for a night before heading off from Cairns airport. The hotel looked very grand when you arrived but it definately had the holiday camp feel to it! We had been upgraded from the basic room as we were on honeymoon but the room smelt damp and the bathroom was long overdue an overhaul.

We did get complimentary champagne which was nice and the bus to town and the airport was very useful. The staff were friendly but we didn't use any of the facilities so can't comment on this.

Can only say that unless they do a refurb I would avoid it!

Can anyone say 'Butlins'

from A TripAdvisor Member
I'm not sure how this Hotel got 5 stars by anyone.

Although the staff were friendly, the entrance was grand and the service pretty much on the ball, the rooms and general hotel complex are straight out of the "how to look like a 1970s holiday camp" book.

We stayed here on our last night in Cairns because it advertsied itself as close to the airport.

The thing is....every hotel in Cairns is close to the airport as it is such a small city.

If you want a better option at a similar price...try the Lakes Cairns Resort & Spa.....

I'd avoid this place in the future.

A good bet after a long international flight

from A TripAdvisor Member
Very nice hotel for Cairns. The staff is very efficient and helpful -- the price includes airport transfers, as well as city and bus station transfers (till 6:00 p.m.) which makes it slightly more economical than some potential competitors. The rooms were reasonably clean and quiet, though the frig/minibar could have used a scrub. The breakfast, although pricey, and less costly than a previous reviewer stated, was still reasonable for Cairns (especially the cold buffet for $14.50 or so?), after a long international flight with reduced food service. The setting was also pleasantly tropical. I will stay there again the next time I am in Cairns.

Very good hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed here in June 2004 for 5 nights and had a very good time - its a great hotel.

The hotel has a courtesy airport transfer which is quick and efficient and it also has a courtesy resort shuttle bus to Cairns Central shopping mall and the main bus terminal which runs from 8am to 6pm.

The hotel is located in an urban area which is very quiet (no shops, bars, restaurants or supermarkets near by) and you would need to get a taxi to go to the resort centre which costs approx. AU$10.00 each way for the 10 minute journey.

The location is the only downside but if you make use of the shuttle bus or share taxis it does not cost too much to get to the resort centre where all the restaurants, shops and bars are located.

The staff are extremely friendly and helpful and the restaurant was fantastic for evening meals - the food was wonderful and fairly priced and a lot cheaper than equivalent standards in the UK.

The choice of meals could be increased and the buffet breakfast is overpriced (AU$24 - more than the main courses in the evening). Unless you can eat and eat and eat you will not get your monies worth!

I had a standard room which was comfortable and well equipped (air con, ceiling fan, fridge, tv) if a little outdated in decor - it could have done with a re-fit. The maid service was good and the room was always clean.

The rooms are laid out in blocks within extensive 'jungle/rainforest' gardens and the pools are lovely.

Beautiful hotel, fabulous location

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed here for 5 days in December 2003.

On the whole staff were very friendly only exception was one guy on reception who thought a complaint was something to riddicule, but after a little input from us was sorted out.

The hotel itself was beautiful with a location to match. Our only problem was that we went at the begining of the rainy season and boy can it rain, but it is at the base of the rainforest.

All the restaurants are priced well but the buffet dinner could have had a better choice.

Rooms were ok, clean and of a reasonable size.

The pools were fabulous, like getting into a bath.

Loved the fact that Bandicoots walked around freely and were not timid of us. The sound of the bats and other wildlife filled the nights air.

We would go back to the Colonial Club if we get the chance, but not in the rainy season.

You must stay here

An amazing place. Staff so friendly and lovely surroundings. Our room was huge and beautiful with everything we required and more. Can't wait to visit again!

Not that great

from phoenixtravelerlover
While the name sounds like an appealing place to be we were disappointed by our stay at the Cairns Colonial Club Resort. Upon arrival the staff was very friendly but the room had much to be desired. There were little ants usually in the bathroom and near the food service area in the room even though we kept it pretty clean.

The ceiling fan worked if you did not mind the really loud clunking noise that went with it.

The maid service was questionable. After our first full day out on the town we returned to the room. After taking out my contacts I could not find my glasses. After some extensive looking we located them behind the bed, the maid service had carelessly knocked them off the night stand and then they were shoved behind the bed. Luckily, they were not broken. The carpet was also not regularly vacuumed (the sand from our beach trips is still on the floor).

Also, beware that the hotel is not located near the center of town.

There are no restaurants in the near vicinity of the hotel so if the resort bus is not running (it only runs from 8 to 6) you will have to eat at the hotel or take a taxi. Mind you the hotel food was not too bad just a little more pricey than other places.

Finally, beware of using you AUD traveler's checks at the hotel. When I purchased a soda at the resort gift shop I was charged 50 cents for using my traveler's checks.

Fantastic hotel, great staff, lovely time

from A TripAdvisor Member
We have stayed int this hotel 3 times now and would recommend it highly. The staff are friendly, very helpful and good fun. The restaurant is innovative and offers choices for all. The swimming pools (2) are ample and the town is fairly local. the hotel runs a bus to town once an hour all day. Found the travel staff very helpful with excursions. We loved our stays here and wouldnt hesitate in going back, in fact we are going back next year.

Cairns Colonial Club friendly, very nice

from A TripAdvisor Member
Cairns Colonial Club was very nice. The grounds were excellent. The rooms were very nice, however, we had a few minor issues, such as some walls were not perfectly clean and the fan in the bathroom did not work. The staff is excellent. The facilities such as the pool, breakfast buffet were very nice. The tour desk was helpful as well. The dinner buffet could have had more selections, but the food was good. I would stay here again.
