Bible Stories

... we’ve been to many famous places where historical figures have been. But this one is a little more personal to me.

In just a few days, I’ve been surrounded by encounters of Biblical references I wasn’t expecting: Hierapolis is to be the place the apostle Philip was crucified, Selcuk is to be the place the apostle John lived and was buried, and outside Efes is to be where Mary lived ...

Getting Stiffed in Selcuk

... in English.

Walk up to a ruin and you're mobbed by people trying to sell you guides and postcards.

"Tip Boxes" are everywhere and are clearly marked in English.

You can even pay for things in Euro (however, the price is significantly hiked for those travelers).

What is NOT touristy about this? I have to wonder what the travelers who are looking for ...

The town that time forgot about (Turkey - Part 2)

... paid the fare. Next mission was to hope that I would get on the flight to Tel Aviv as a standby passenger. After a tense wait, I was handed a boarding pass and we took off one hour late with no announcement as to the reason.
So long Turkey, time for a new chapter and a much needed change of pace. My patience had worn thin but I forced a smile, knowing it would be renewed once I set foot in a new land filled with new challenges.

Ephesus... Seeing the Site...

... practice of these acts and more importantly the conversations that ensue from them that drives us to "vacation"... camaraderie through shared experiences... the sites acting as a mere vehicle to enter into this social experience... Either way... it is on my radar... and I am finding myself observing, processing and trying to make sense of my own drive to "see" the world... I have been traveling all of my life... not so much vacationing... I have often ...

Visited ruins of Troy on the way to Selcuk

This has been the best hostel so far I think. There's a pool and a bar and I managed to score a twin room again. We've spent a lot of the day on the bus - 8am to 7pm though we did stop at Troy for 1.5 hours and lunch for another h our as well as a couple of pee stops. Troy was a bit disappointing since the archeologist actually ...

... has been so extensively excavated, but the site is on a hill overlooking the Dardenelles and we amble along with a stray cat, appreciating the peace. Rick remarks that Helen was probably glad to be kidnapped by Paris to live in such a great location in Priam's palace. The sun slips behind the Gallipoli Peninsula directly across the Dardenlles, a full moon rises behind our shoulders. The next day we ferry across the Dardenelles(the narrow waterway ...

Kusadasi, Turkey in the morning

We disembarked around 7 and drove 20 minutes to Ephesus. We drove past the "Fanta" beach..you know, the drink Fanta. Fanta sponsors events on this beach, so that is what it is know as, but I don't know the real name. They also have the 8th best water park in the world according to the New York times. It did look pretty good. Once we got to Ephesus we came in at the top entrance and worked our way down to the lower entrance. Excavations ...

Trapped in Turkey - a Good Trip Gone Wrong

... the old west. We talk, and plot what to do if Freddie appears in the front of the boat. ( When alcohol is involved in massive quantities like it has been tonight, reason goes out the window, or overboard, if you will. I mean, come on - I'm fifty-six years old! How about 'No thanks, Freddie.' Bit, noooooooooo - I have to start acting like a sixteen year old, plotting with my friends and hiding like a school girl. How embarrassing. ) The next hour is filled with sneaky trips to the ...
