Cairns

before we left paradise at airlie beach, we decided to stagger off the sun loungers and spend a day out on the great barrier reef. we set off on a fairly large catamaran for what turned out to be a 2 and half hour boat trip out into the great wide ocean ( over 60 miles out from the shore ) where we joined up to a big floating pontoon. firstly we went out on the glass bottom boat to have a look at the great barrier reef, which to be honest didn't seem all that great then, before going out in a...

ALMOST THE END!!

Sunday evening was ended in quite a weird way. Sadly John did not have his camera with him but we stumbled across a carol concert on the esplanade. Something very surreal about sitting outside in 28deg heat singing "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" while Santa and Mrs Claws are in the full regalia on the stage!!!! I was chatting to a lady in the front row who turned out to be the mayor!! Then we sang "Six White Boomers" had to have this explained- they are kangaroos?? Monday morning we got up e...

FAREWELL AUSTRALIA

Almost the end of the holiday and the blog... I have been letting John write it most of the time as he touch types! I think those that know us well will work out which bits were written by who!!!!!! Today was a bit of a nothing day, we were both very disappointed about missing Lizard. However I didnt fancy being up in a light aircraft all that much anyway let alone in a thunder storm!!! Went shopping much to John's disgust and I had my nails done while he wandered round. We have bought anothe...

We arrived midday in Cairns to 30 degree Celcius. We were met by a representative of the tour company and taken to our hotel. Our hotel was quite central and not too far from the ocean so we spent the rest of the afternoon leisurely walking along the Esplanade enjoying the ocean air. We had an early supper and headed to bed around 9:30 pm as we had an early morning pickup for our trip to Kuranda which is a village west of Cairns. In the morning the bus driver dropped us at the Freshwater Rail...

17th Jan - We left dreary Rockhampton early and caught the bus to Airlie Beach where we arrived mid-afternoon. Our aching bodies just about managed to cope with the uphill walk to the hostel. I knew I should have brought Speckles with me! In the evening we went out for a birthday meal for LJ to a seafood restaurant which was really good. For my main course I had bugs - fortunately not the wriggly type but Morton Bay bugs which are a bit like a crab but taste more like a prawn. 18th Jan - A mu...

Meeting up with Borak

I had run out of time to find a new ride up to Cairns mostly because Vicki (hereafter referred to as ***** Lying ***** (BLW)), the only non busted babe from the BBB cruise, reneged on giving me a ride from Airlie Beach. She SMSes me about 5 minutes before we were supposed to leave and says that she met some friends and decided not to leave for a few days. I could have caught a ride with Karen and her boyfriend, but BLW had offered first. About an hour later, I see BLW at the petrol station al...

All the pretty fishes!!! And some Irish stupidity

... going to turn around and say ‘Yes, I was wrong, please come back into the club?’ Duh!) And now Irish chic was complaining that there is no such law in Ireland, so why should it apply to her in Australia! I had a good laugh at that point, and happily went back to sleep, as Irish chic burst into tears.

Today I am going to look around the Atherton Tablelands, which are apparently home to lakes, waterfalls, baby turtles and cassowaries.

Au Revoir Australia

... the West end not Fortitude Valley and there is masses to do within a radius of an hour or two's drive from the centre of Brisbane. .. Byron Bay, the Gold coast, the Sunshine coast, Mountain Tamborine and the Sunshine Hinterland of Montville and Maleny. It was also fantastic to spend so much time with Hamish and Jackie and get an insight into their life in Oz and a better understanding as to why they have chosen to live there and in Brisbane.
