We visited some markets opposite Beijing Zoo where they had about 7 floors of clothes, shoes, t shirts, suits...pretty much everything you could wear. After trawling the many floors, we both manged to find some quality shoes for cheap, cheap! Mandy picked up some casual shoes for about $15 and Steve bought some excellent outdoor Merrells for about $80. Sweet!

... Behai Park. This was was beautiful and had hardly any people in it whch was strange because we were expecting there to be loads of people, maybe the rain put them off. We had already heard too many bad stories about the taxi drivers in Beijing charging tourists way too much and then arguing when you dont pay so we opted for another very long walk back to the area around the hostel which had lots of shops and resturants. ... and down many watch towers, taking many photos whilst James spent entire walk texting on his mobile ( imagine if he had Facebook ). On road out we stopped at a cracking toilet (totally awful) which will make it into my toilet story book, and I will include a photo for you. We have had reasonably good toilets everywhere so I was surprised at how bad this one was given its at the base of the most visited site in China.

... day, and really with the centipedes crawling on the floor, I wasn't so sure I wanted to eat one in my sleep right before my flight to Europe.

Leaving Larry's at 3:30am tomorrow morning, and I cannot wait to reach Italy. It's been a long time since I've seen Todd, who coincidentally is also there for a "science people" conference. Makes me wonder if I should just get a pHD and travel the world ;) More updates to come on our exciting travels in Europe!

The drive took us through Beijing suburbs, which stretched for 20 miles, and then through several villages. We passed through a number of corn fields, which was a surprise (we expected rice?). There was a lot of creative center lane driving. We got used to that after awhile.

It took about 2 hours to reach the base of the wall, and the whole area is a souvenir market, with very assertive (I was grabbed by the arm and literally pulled into a lady's ...
