... the coldest times of the year for the little town that sat on Lake Erie. With windchill that week the temperature reached a low of -70 deg Farenheit. It was hell. We didnt leave the warmth of her parents house too much, but one night we decided to go visit some boys she went to highschool with at their 'homemade' cabin in the woods. We bundled up and made the drive and treck through ...
Iron River, Wisconsin, United States lindsey.martin... 2000 rose bushes and 600+ varieties of roses. A lot of the bushes still had roses in full bloom. In another area there was a peony garden that had over 380 varieties of peonies. The downtown core catered mainly to tourists – small cantinas, bars, lounges, restaurants and gift shops. The whole area (about a six square blocks) was built with brick cobblestones instead of pavement. It was a pleasant walk after a long day’s drive!
Duluth, Minnesota, United States jimcabay... any challenge in life. His basic story is that he was diagnosed with cancer in his late teens, as a result he had one leg amputated. A few years later whilst only in his early 20's he took it upon himself to raise money and awareness for cancer research. He intended to do this by running from the east coast of Canada, all the way to the west coast. He ran 26 miles a day for 143 consecutive days, until he got just outside of Thunder Bay ...
Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada swaff... shape. I'm sure Doug knows just what I'm talking about, having sailed so much. It is magic.
We had a nice stroll down the pier before we ate dinner. Many older folks and couples stopped to ask about the twins and Mara's ever-popular family tartan beret. Tomorrow we will get up and drive the Apostle Island shoreline drive. This area reminds me so much of Friday Harbor in the San Juans...even with the inland ...
... sweaty tee shirts for one more moment, we have little choice but to sleep nude. When we wake in the morning the cabin is freezing cold. It has a heater, but I practically catch pneumonia turning it on.
While Julie sleeps on, I head to the Coho Café for coffee, about a mile down Highway 61. This café is associated with the Bluefin Bay resort. We’d looked at its restaurant the night before and it felt too snooty for my tastes. Unfortunately, even the caf ...
... averaging an average temp of 40 degrees... cold enough to have hypothermia set in after a few minutes of contact... a land of numerous bugs that are on the constant hunt for human blood... and with an erratic weather pattern that can quickly change... turning a warmish sunny summer day into a cold, blustery and rainy autumnish feeling day in mere minutes...
The other face of the Arrowhead region is that it is filled with ...
... and monuments, and unlike the Canadians they didn’t fleece us for an entry fee, and parking was free. A bit of a moan here…. In Canada we purchased a National parks pass for something like $145 CDN, and that gives us access to all the parks, but there is a catch that those tricky Canucks don’t tell you, often there are additional parking charges, which really offends my sense of fairness. End of moan!!!
Now the road heading south along the shores of lake superior ...
We wound our way along the lakeshore where the cliffs are slowly diminishing from the Candian grandeur size, while passing quaint towns where we scooped up some more fresh and smoked Whitefish for dinner and snacks. Temperance River was the first State Park actually on Lake Superior, mainly because the road winds ...
Temperance River State Park, Minnesota, United States tombuttle... keep him from hearing my whinning if I had actually gone. I've got a few photos of Paul actually doing it. He says I have great ideas about fun things to do, but miss in the execution of it....heh, heh. We're off to the boundary waters today to the little town of Ely (pronounced (E-lee, I found out). More photos when we get to another internet oasis...they're a bit rare up here. Though, I'll tell the natives that they're less hard to find than moose! Ta, Jorge
