Gettin' the ball rollin'

While technically we have been in Queensland - it's called the Sunshine State, need I say more?! - for about a week and a half now, it feels as though our grand adventure only TRULY began the day before yesterday. This is due to the fact that our first week in Brisbane was spent with the king of all sinus infections sucking the life out of us while we waited for good ol' Tom, the discount car salesman to get his ass in gear and sell us a car. We found the car we wanted on Wednesday, the first...

Cape Hillsborough National Park via Arlie Beach

Stopped in Airlie beach to relax in the sunshine and let Craig cool down in the lovely lagoon. Then headed to Cape Hillsborough National Park. A very rustic campsite with Pretty-face Wallabies, brush turkies, lots of cockatoos and of course the Laughing Kookaburra. It's a kind of Kingfisher that claims it territory by making a chuckling sound. It made all the trees sound like they were laughing, very strange! We got up at 6am to go down to the beach and watch the wallabies having breakfast in...

... often art deco buildings that have been built since. We had a fascinating walk around these buildings guided by a useful leaflet which gave a lot of background about each of them. It was clear that Mackay was making significant efforts to recognise and value its heritage, although this has not always been the case.

There’s also a Big Banana outside an angling shop. No, I don’t see the connection either. We had planned ...

We continued onto Mackay where we caught up with Karl and Kate and their two little kids. Karl is a friend from when Chris first started going away to sea, ie, a very long time ago. Lucy their two year old loved the kombi, to the point where she showed us exactly where her bed could be and she tucked her self in behind the back seat in the bed linen. The word cute doesn't justify it when a 2 year old thinks Kombi's are cute.....the ...

Fitch Hatton Gorge & Eungella National Park

... combination. We stopped, savored, agreed, and moved onto Fitch Hatton. After being bad car renters, we drove on a unsealed, creek crossing road, we went on a mini hike (1.6km) to the Araluen Falls, then tried to continue on to the Wheel of Fire Falls, but unfortunately the river was too swollen and we couldn't make it across. Oh well. Next was the Eungella Park itself. Marie isn't a big fan of the walking tours so we did a ...

Monsoon in Mackay

... emergency, we have a bag packed and ready to grab with all the essentials (e.g. laptop, passports, cameras, medicine, notebook with booking details, etc.). Ryan thinks I'm being paranoid, but rather be prepared than sorry. We can always buy clothes and toiletries again. The upside is that our room is the only room in the motel which is not completely flooded (yet). We also have enough food with us for breakfast and lunch. We still have electricity and might be able to ...
