Well left Sydney after a week and flew to Cairns, wow wot a place, very Carribean feel about it, but just our luck as it was their rainy season, Ha! Bloody typical eh! Only us. We stayed just 10mins outside of the city at a place called Holloways Beach at a resort called Cairns Beach Resort, so would say that if anyone visits Cairns defo stop at this place. We got it so cheap online, one bed apartment with the works (apparently 4*)yet another treat but thought we deserved it after spending a ...

Cairns Day #4

Day 3 - Reef Encounter Another 06:00 "wake up scuba time"... but, only 3 more dives and will be fully cerifited open water divers!!! We were up last night completeing the written test... Everyone (including the boys) passed the written test... to pass they had to have over 90%... During the first dive of the day we were all tested on the various tactics we learned throughout our training. Yes, Julie was testing on removing her regulator and was able to do so with out much trouble! Later that ...

... in a fantastic all timber pole building providing spectacular views over the range.

We have enjoyed the cooler air of Mareeba, it is a pleasant change from the humidity of the coast. From here we are heading south to check out Atherton and the surrounding areas, we have got our eye on a few dairy farm outlets, so there will be more gastronomical indulging I’m sure!

Until next time..............................

... our age so the place totally caters to young adults on holiday. There is a bar, cafe, night club, late night pizza spot, a washing room, a pool and computers galore. Not a bad place to stay for 5 nights :)

Saturday- Today we went to Tjapukai Aboriginal Park. It was pretty cool- we got our faced painted in traditional ceremonial paint, learned about their history, heard their creation myth and threw both spears and boomerangs. Kyle actually got to keep one of the ...

... its meandering route past some breathtaking scenery. This 37 km railway was completed in 1891 to supply the gold mines that were discovered in 1873 in the hills . It was an incredible engineering feat taking 1500 men, armed with picks & shovels (& dynamite) 5 years to complete, it was one of the most ambitious railway projects ever undertaken.
Today it is a popular tourist journey with passengers travelling in the original wooden carriages ...

... glass window and several feet away from small sharks and schools of hundreds of much larger (3' - 4') fish.

What a uniquely wonderful experience-and to think this was only one small portion of the entire GBR!

As the tour drew to a close and our boat motored back to shore, the sun was setting and casting beautiful light over the harbor and surrounding mountain-lined coastline. All-in, it was a great day!

Amongst the beautiful people

24 March 2009 Early start - and now begins what I've been looking forward too. Ever since I coughed and spluttered and was humiliated in the Gili Islands while snorkelling, I've been eagerly awaiting the chance to get the last laugh and prove my prowess under the water - 20 meters - or 60 feet under to be precise. Today I begin to learn how to scuba dive and well - as I board the bus - a feeling of gritty determination begins to ...

Hurricane Hamish

... our manager told us that he has never seen snow, that he has only seen in it pictures. Friday afternoon and evening brought the craziest rain I have ever seen. It was almost as if the clouds were just around us and someone had turned on a tap in the sky. It was definitely monsoonal weather and we expected floods. In the evening the rain slowed down and stopped and everything was eerily quiet as we waited for the storm ...

Our

Off to Cairns and a look into a lovely city, sophisticated yet with a small town flavor. We stopped at the city market that was just awakening for its busy day of sales to the local merchants. Just enjoying walking through the city we visited their local department store, taking in the food markets and goods that were available for sale. The downtown area has a car-less street area that makes it a ...
