We have enjoyed the cooler air of Mareeba, it is a pleasant change from the humidity of the coast. From here we are heading south to check out Atherton and the surrounding areas, we have got our eye on a few dairy farm outlets, so there will be more gastronomical indulging I’m sure!

... our age so the place totally caters to young adults on holiday. There is a bar, cafe, night club, late night pizza spot, a washing room, a pool and computers galore. Not a bad place to stay for 5 nights :)

... its meandering route past some breathtaking scenery. This 37 km railway was completed in 1891 to supply the gold mines that were discovered in 1873 in the hills . It was an incredible engineering feat taking 1500 men, armed with picks & shovels (& dynamite) 5 years to complete, it was one of the most ambitious railway projects ever undertaken.
Today it is a popular tourist journey with passengers travelling in the original wooden carriages ...

... glass window and several feet away from small sharks and schools of hundreds of much larger (3' - 4') fish.

What a uniquely wonderful experience-and to think this was only one small portion of the entire GBR!

As the tour drew to a close and our boat motored back to shore, the sun was setting and casting beautiful light over the harbor and surrounding mountain-lined coastline. All-in, it was a great day!

... our manager told us that he has never seen snow, that he has only seen in it pictures. Friday afternoon and evening brought the craziest rain I have ever seen. It was almost as if the clouds were just around us and someone had turned on a tap in the sky. It was definitely monsoonal weather and we expected floods. In the evening the rain slowed down and stopped and everything was eerily quiet as we waited for the storm ...

Off to Cairns and a look into a lovely city, sophisticated yet with a small town flavor. We stopped at the city market that was just awakening for its busy day of sales to the local merchants.
