We stayed just a little north of Varkala ... another lovely spot ... with another lovely view ...
Varkala has been a popular spot on the backpacker trail for 20 years, but is still relatively unspoilt as small hotels, cafes and shops selling clothes and souvenirs …
I had spent some time online trying to find somewhere suitable to spend my birthday weekend, none of the places seemed to stand out, apparently Varkala beach is a beautiful spot but the photographs didn't really give this impression. The place I opted for had huts next to the beach, none of the other places seemed to have this and for me it was a …
... a couple of shopping trips into Varkala town, it is busy, busy, but I really like this side of India, it never ceases to amaze me what you can buy in these little shops. So many of them appear to have the same stock, I wonder how many of them can make a living from it. I wonder if that is the difference, in India if they can make a living it is good, sometimes In England, people feel they have to get rich from business ventures, when making a living can be enough.

... Fingers crossed. Yet another scenic train journey, the hours passed quickly, we tried out some train food, it was lush. We arrived in Varkala and were approached by a rickshaw driver, in traditional Keralan wear, basically a sheet wrapped round the waist... we agreed a price, and jumped in. He asked us if we needed a place to stay, Naomi was slightly reluctant, but I thought we should check out what he had to offer, we'd heard stories of people paying ...
The normal yea that you get served like at breakfast at the YWCA is white and sweet +++. J says it is like hot ice cream, M thinks they add condensmilk, you have to specify tea without sugar and milk served separately the it is served in a glass with a tea bag, you can add your own milk, which is always hot. We had a super duper stay in Varkala on a cliff over looking the sea.
Bathroom on suite at 600 rupee per night £7.50 ( thats spending kids inheritance).

We stayed in a non AC chalet, set in pretty gardens with a sea view. Our bed was comfy and the fan and water both worked well. The best part was listening to the waves crashing on the shore and walking just a few metres to a small but surprisingly clean beach, which we shared with fishermen hauling in their catch in the morning, and mending their boat during the day. There is a great coastal path running in one direction to Varkala where there are shops and restaurants along the cliff with the beach below and in the opposite direction past a couple of small resorts to Edava. We had lunch and dinner once and the food was good, but the menu is fairly limited and there were other places within walking distance. They are building some new chalets behind the restaurant which are much closer together than the existing units.
