        ... been close to Springfield by this time, we were ready to tell this character to pull over. What does he do? For the rest of the journey, he keeps apologising for what happened. If he apologised once, he apologised 100 times. He also asks us please not to report him which we haven't done because we are fearful if he loses his job, what happens to his little girls. Catch 22 though, if he did this to us, what happens if he does it again and ends up killing someone? By the time we ...

        Curiosities on Route 66

        Route 66 in Missouri ran from Saint Louis to Joplin, often near the current I-44. My Route 66 guidebooks say that the Meramec Caverns were the oldest tourist attraction along Route 66. So, of course, I needed to take the tour. Reviewed as being quite kitschy, the tour wasn't all that bad though not really worth $21. The first cavern was opened to the public in 1933 and five more ...

        What I learned today is:

        1) do not depend on the mileage given on state maps because a distance of 20 miles can take much, much longer than expected;

        2) take U.S. highways when possible, then state highways — my average speed on the county roads in this part of the state was ...

        The French in Soulard and St. Charles

        Soulard is a historic district just south of the Arch which features French architecture, courtyards, cafes, shops - many of the buildings restored. In 1838 Julia Soulard, wife of the Frenchman who came to Saint Louis to survey the area for the King of Spain, donated land to the city for a public market. Currently Soulard Market has over 80 vendors on a Saturday and is a bustling place. I walked through wishing I had room in my tiny refrigerator for more ...

        Cuba, MO Mural City

        One nice thing about only having to drive for around 5 hours a day is that you have time to do what you want and not rush doing it :)

        When we arrived last night, we read that Cuba was famous for the many murals painted on buildings around town and decided to walk/drive around to see them all before Day 2 on highway. Very informative and fun. Very cute small town. So glad we spent time here!
