Historical Traveler Reviews of Best Western Playa Suites Acapulco

Enjoyed our stay

from crosstobear2
Playa Suites is a hotel where mostly Mexican families stay for vacations. There were very few Americans there when we visited for a week in April of 2003. We enjoyed using our Spanish learned in high school and learning more. Most of the employees spoke some English and if they did not, they could find someone who did. Our room was very nice with marble floors, a living room and raised bedroom. Our room overlooked Acapulco Bay and the bedroom had shutters we could pull open to see the bay from our bed.

The beach was nice, but we had to pay to rent chairs and an umbrella.

However, that came with your own personal waiter who kept the drinks coming. Cerveza (beer) was cheaper than water. And American money was readily accepted anywhere. However, we walked across the street to the bank one day and exchanged money to make things easy.

The pool was being renovated while we were there. It is small and encircles a bar.

We always took a walk, taxi or buggy ride to restaurants on the street to eat rather than eating in the hotel although we did eat at the hotel buffet for breakfast a couple of times. It was ok, but the restaurants outside of the hotel are terrific.

Rather than take a tour, we hired our own taxi driver who spoke English. He took us everywhere and acted as a personal guide.

The vendors are a pain. We found that if you just say no and don't make eye contact, that's the best way to get rid of them on the street, on the beach, and in the hotel. Many people are trying to sell time shares and will offer "free" meals. Don't do it. The food is terrible at the free breakfast and the sales pitch is relentless.

Our most romantic evening was when we took a taxi to Los Flomingos--an old, small resort where Hollywood legends from the 1940's used to hang out. We watched the sun set from the veranda while drinking Coco Locos, a drink that John Wayne and Johnny Weismuller dreamed up one day at the bar. Then we had dinner. Since most people in Mexico dine later, we were the only ones in the restaurant due to the time of sunset. Some of the wait staff is elderly and used to be there when Hollywood stars owned the hotel. They told us personal anecdotes. Our waiter pointed out Cary Grant's favorite table in the restaurant. I could just visualize him being there! The place hasn't changed much since the 1940's. There are pictures on the walls everywhere. And the food was delicious.

Playa Suites gave us a taste of Mexico. It's not like the big, all-inclusive commercial hotels where everyone speaks English. This place had Mexican standards. And by Mexican standards, it was nice.

Loved it

I thought that the hotel was more than sufficient. It provided me with absolutely everything to go along with the wonderful time I spent in Mexico. I have many memories at the hotel that I will never forget and I would recommend this hotel to anyone who is going to Acapulco.

Horrible- Listen to these reviews... I ignored them!

I just recently went to acapulco on spring break this year, and we stayed in the Playa Suites. This was the worst hotel I've EVER stayed in. First we reserved the Penthouse Suite, and when we got there they told us they didn't have any left. It took an hour to check in. The staff was VERY rude, and always were looking for tips. The hotel rooms were damp and musty. The sheets were disgusting, I didn't even want to sleep on them. Our toilet got clogged and it took them 3 days to fix it, we kept calling but they ignored us. If you are going to acapulco on a relaxing spring break, DON'T stay here- it might be cheap but you will be in HELL! The food was nasty, and the service was horrible. I would never recommend this to anyone, stay in the princess hotel or a nice hotel- even if its more money. Or rent a house in Las Brisas... especially if you're a spring breaker going on one of those package deals... it's the same price to rent a beautiful house in las brisas and you have a private pool and your own servants...

I hate Playa Suites!

My friends and I just returned from our worst hotel experience ever; The Playa Suites in Acapulco. I was told this was a 4 to 5 star hotel, but I wouldn't even give it 1 star. The staff was rude, service was slow, and as other reviews said, DO NOT eat the food there. We had the "All Inclusive" package, well that was a big rip off. We never ate there because the food was gross and so were the drinks. I do not think there is one good thing I could say about this hotel. From the dates on the other reviews, I can tell that others staying there during spring break hated this hotel as much as my friends and I did. Before we left we read some reviews on this hotel but we ignored them, BIG MISTAKE, we should have listened.

Stay anywhere but here

Awful! The hotel is disgusting, there is throwup in the stairwells and the floors are gross. We a "six person suite" which meant 2 beds and a pullout couch...and it took us 5 days to get 6 pillows for 6 people....imagine that. Stay anywhere but here. If you decide to stay here...pack your own food or prepare to starve

Poop in the pools

from A TripAdvisor Member
my friends and i stayed at the playa suites last spring break and it was a miserable experience. someone pooped in the pool and no one even bothered to clean it up. people would puke off the balconies and again, no one bothered to clean it up. oh yeah, dont eat the food or drink the water... THE RUNS WILL GET YOU! the beaches were covered with bugs that gave me a rash on my backside and the water had garbage floating in it. one day little mexican men stole my bikini top when i was sunbathing which was quite embarassing. to top it off there was no air conditioning and we only had 2 twin beds which were small and nasty for 4 friends and i.other than that, acapulco was great. the clubs were fun and the drinks never stopped.

This hotel is alot to be desired. My mom and I went there for christmas 2002. The best part of the vacation was the weather. No one wanted to accept any american money which was difficult but we did have pesos. Also places that said they accepted credit cards lied. The rooms were decent. It was quite upsetting that no one seemed to speak english at the hotel or even attempted to do so. I had to go off the little I have learned over the years. The pool was not desirable at all, we didn't even attempt to get in it. It looked like a glorified bathtub! The beach was great, would have been better without all the vendors, peddling things! But I guess everyone has to make a living. If I decide to return to acapulco, I will definitely stay in an american chain of hotels. It seemed like they only wanted to cater to their spanish speaking/mexican guests. Don't waste your money on this dump. The entire decor of the hotel was pretty shabby. I suggest all travel sites take this place off their list of choices. Another problem is that they are not very computer literate so it confuses them when you show up with a print out of your confirmation. They still do the reservations on paper by hand and keep all the guests with information in a very large shoe box! truly remarkable!!!!! My mom and I were so glad to leave!

Never Stay there

Last Spring Break me and my 2 friends stayed at the Playa suites and it was an awful experience. there was no air conditioning in the rooms. The pool area was not as nice as it appears in the pictures. The best hotel to stay in acapulco is the Hyatt. Never stay here!

8'10" Sail Fish

from A TripAdvisor Member
Dec 2001 My husband and I stayed at Playa Suites for 8 days. Rooms were clean, but marble floor was very slippery because of the humidity. We'd HIGHLY recommend talking with Narcisco (scuba instructor) at neighboring Costa Club Hotel. Narcisco took us deep sea fishing. I caught an 8'10" (160 lbs.) sail fish!!! Playa Suites was only $60 a night because of the lack of tourism at that time.

Xmas in Acapulco

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed with our 2 teens between Christmas and New Years. Rooms were clean, but musty as with many of the tropical hotels. Value was excellent at $100 per night for a 2 room suite. Beach was clean, and hotel beach security excellent. Hotel prices and service were good. You are in the heart of downtown activity, easy to walk to shopping, bars, restaurants-traffic is bad. Weather was great.
