Phuket

21st to 24th Sept 2007 On Friday I decided to fly down to Phuket to make the most of the rest and relaxation. I arrived around 1230 after a 50 minute flight from Bangkok. The hotel in Phuket is fabulous and my room looks over Karon beach and the 2 of the 3 hotel pools. When I arrived, there was a little excitment at first outside my room. When I heard a large bang, I looked out my window and saw a man throwing a stick towards it. When I ran up to the window I noticed there was a snake on my p...

Great Location

from GoldenAngel
My wife and I stayed at this hotel for 12 nights and were very comfortable indeed. the setting is great with lovely views across the lagoon to the sea. The two swimming pools are pleasantly positioned and were never overcrowded. the stretch of beach nearest to the hotel also tends to be quieter. The staff were helpful and friendly, and the food in the restaurant was good. There are several steps up to some of the rooms as the hotel is terraced into the hillside, but this shouldn't be a problem to most people. It provides the beautiful views from the balcony.

Ok, But I'm Lowering My Rating

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed at the Ocean Resort in March 2006 for the second time.

It is an acceptable hotel and for USD57 per night for a 'deluxe,' ocean-view room the I received my money's worth.

On my last visit I rated Ocean Resort 3 stars (by US standards) but I'm lowering my rating to 2 stars.

The rooms are getting aged, the door was flimsy and barely locked, and the bathroom was dirty with enormous cobwebs made by a creature I am glad I never saw.

As mentioned in previous reviews, the [included] breakfast buffet is very crowded and sometimes difficult to obtain.

Having said all this, the Ocean Resort is still a decent place to stay - it's just not 4 or 5 star quality.

The 3 pools are clean and accessible, the beach is a 2 minute walk and the views of the sunsets from the rooms are priceless.

It is a short walk to the Karon Village center and the numerous restaurants there.

The staff are of course exceptional people and are a joy to deal with.

Overall, I recommend Ocean Resort if you pay in the USD30 to USD60 range but don't expect Le Meridian amenities.

Great value

we stayed at the Ocean resort end Dec to Beginning of Jan 06 and found it to be very good, the staff were excellent, always very helpful, smiling and friendly. The rooms were extremely clean and more than adequate for a 3 star hotel. The pools appear to be well kept although didn't actually use them as we were busy diving. Location we found to be just right for beach (couple of minutes walk away) and centre of town a couple of minutes further. The steps at hotel are not bad if you dont have walking difficulties, and there is a lift from 1st floor to 5th floor where we were. The views over the ocean were wonderful and the sun sets in the direction you face from your room. All in all we would thoroughley recommend this hotel and would certainly stay there again.

Terrible rooms, very crowded breakfast

from A TripAdvisor Member
The room was just like a cheap motel room. Very cheap feel to everything, tiny bathroom, and definitely not 3 star. 2 star rooms and that's being generous.

The pool area is nice and the views are lovely. Service was generally okay.

Breakfast itself was fine but the tables were jammed in and other guests were too close. I've never stayed in a hotel where it was so bad at breakfast time!

Very few facilities - just the lobby, pool and restaurant. I expected a bit more.

Overall, very disappointing except for the views and the pools. I'd say it's definitely not worth more than $40 a night.

No Problems

from A TripAdvisor Member
My spouse and I stayed at this hotel for 10 days in Aug and had a nice time with no problems. This is a 3 star hotel so don't expect absolute luxury. The staff were excellent; being polite and efficient at all times. Our room was fine, and considering the price we paid had no complaints. We were put in a room on the top floor but felt a little far from the pool etc and moved to a room by the pool, which although was a little smaller was nice all the same. On the downside this hotel is on the far north of the resortand about a minute walk from the beach. Hotels further down the beach and nearer to Kata beach seemed to have a greater variety of amenties nearby. This was not a major problem as we don't mind walking, but would be a problem for people with mobility problems.

Please bear in mind that Karon is still recovering from the effects of the tsunami which meant there was some building work going on by the beach, but this should be near completed by the high season. A previous post did mention the lagoon which is currently drained (again due to the effects of the tsunami), the lagoon is currently being worked on and didnt affect our holiday experience.

The sea off Phuket is very choppy in Aug due to the effect of the southwest monsoon, making swimming in the sea immpossible; even the strongest of swimmers. If you enjoy swimming in the sea and wish to holiday on the Thailand beaches in August then visit the Samui archipelego in the Gulf of Thailand and give Phuket a miss.

We were booked to stay in this hotel for 9 days in August. We moved out the day we arrived!!!! The website makes it look quite attractive but the rooms are awful and the air conditioning does not work which is an essential in Thailand. The trouble started at Phuket Airport where we had a taxi booked from the Hotel and it didn't arrive. We had to wait in the heat for 30 minutes after a 16 hour journey and call the hotel twice to get our car. We could have saved the trouble and arranged a taxi immediately like everone else!!! When we arrived we were put in a 'Superior' room which had a TINY bathroom which needed renovation, and the whole appearance was like a very cheap motel anywhere in the world.

The 'lagoon' in front was drained, and looked like a sewage farm.

We did expect 3 star but this is a mediocre 2 star. The only 'good' thing was that the staff were mortified that we were leaving and very apoligetic!!!!

We stayed in Karon, and found everywhere else for the same money looked better.

Good value.

We stayed at this hotel from 24 May 05 to 2 June 05. As this is the off season they offer 8 days for thr price of 6. Our stay was excellent and the staff could not be more helpful and are lovely people. The hotel only had about 20 people staying at any one time due to the tsunami and it being off season so we got really great service from the friendly staff. The beach at Karon is better than Patong and Kata and was not nearly as badly affected by the tsunami as Patong. Karon is much quieter than Patong but a local taxi will take you to the fleshpots of Patong for 200 Baht. The previous reviewers are correct - this is a three star resort. The rooms are fairly small but clean and comfortable with effective aircon ,with room service available. The restaurant serves a good breakfast with eggs made to order. There are 3 pools which were well maintained. On the negative side, as previous reviewers have indicated, the rooms need an update and the towels are thin. For the money well worth it.

Good place to stay

from Scattercash
Good hotel with some of the best sea views of any hotel in Karon. Some of the rooms are a bit "tired". We asked to be moved after our first night and got a really nice room. Staff are helpful and the pools are great. Very competitive rates compared to a lot of places in Karon beach and a fairly quiet location - ask for a room high up in the hotel. There are lots of steps to negotiate so this hotel is probably not great for those with a disabilty or with young children.
