Airlie Beach - Day 135 - 142

We had a very lazy morning at Cheryl & Kevin's in Townsville and didn't end up leaving until around 2pm.

We had planned to stay at a free camp south of Bowen but were so late in getting there that we ended up booking into a campsite on the outskirts of Bowen. I have to say this is definately the worst campsite we've stayed at! $22 for an unpowered site in a field, some less than desirable fellow campers and the worst toilet block I've seen. Than...

Airlie Beach Take 2

Airlie Beach - Day 151 & 152

We all agreed to go back to the Big 4 caravan park when we got off the boat. We figured that if the kids had plenty to amuse themselves with then we could get on with doing our mountains of washing and restocking our cupboards.

Maegan's 8th birthday was the following week and we would be parting company before then so we decided to have an early birthday tea for her.

The kids had a great time pigging out on lollies, crisps and birthday cak...

Hunter Valley and Home and Away

We drove about an hour from Newcastle to an area called Hunter Valley. This is a major wine making area in Australia and there are vineyards everywhere. Why would we want to go and look at vineyards you may ask?? Well because of the free wine! All vineyards have cellar doors were they invite you in to sample as much wine as you like. There is no obligation to buy, we didn't but Niki certainly took advantage of their hospitality. We went to about 5 vineyards and sampled quite a few in each. Da...

Adelaide (Day 1)

Saturday, 8th December, 2007 (Written by Stephen) Adelaide Packed up reasonably early, didn't take too long as we hadn't unloaded everything the night before, we then drove into Adelaide and meandered our way through the northern suburbs before heading out to West Beach and the BIG4 caravan park at Adelaide Shores. Gee the size of this park is a rival for Cairns Coconut it is huge. Plenty of things for the kids to do, jumping pillow, basketball court, half-tennis court, small swimming pool (...

Backpackers, jumping pillows and sandflies

We started off with the intention of staying only 2 nights at the Big 4 in Airlie because it was so expensive ($45 a night compared to the $15 a night at Bivouac ! That placed has made me a bit of a tight **** when it comes to van park fees now. And I have a real issue with parks that charge extra per child - especially seeing as we are self contained and don't even need to use their showers etc....) But, the kids were having a great time with the playground and jumping pillow and the Bradsha...

I'd a called em Chazzwazzers...

We got to the Whitsundays late after a 7 hour drive up the coast. We will be really excited to get rid of this van when we go to return it. Driving on the left side of the road, right side of the car, and 5-speed tranny is not so fun when my "navigator" (Tara) is sawing logs in the passenger seat next to me most of the 3200 km drive from Sydney to Cairns... luckily she woke up to tell me today that I was driving on the right side of the road and not realizing it, so I gotta give her credit f...

Queensland, Australia (Brisbane - Cairns)

27th January 2005 Christchurch to Brisbane Easy sunny morning in Christchurch, packed up and left the hostel by 10am, had a couple of hours to wait for our bus to the airport, so just relaxed in the sunshine in the main square, letting the world go by. Another great flight with Qantas before landing at Brisbane. We were immediately hit by the heat, wow! Never really understand the heat versus humidity arguments, but whatever the combination here, it is pretty serious! This is going to be a sw...

Day 276- 280 Airlie Beach

Day 276-280 Airlie Beach Wed 2nd– Sun 6th Sept 2009

Wayne and Gill are flying up today and Maegan is most excited that there will be more family members to help celebrate her birthday on the 7th.

We are all off the boat by 10am and now attempting to adjust to land and set up the vans back at the Big 4 park, most are experiencing “sea legs” and find ourselves wobbling and eventually losing balance when standing still.

Greg can’t find the car keys, ...

Sailing the Whitsunday

We stayed at yet another Big 4 campsite at Airlie Beach. I highly recommend these Big 4 campsites. They are very well equipped. When we arrived at Airlie Beach, Steve and Mark did a skydive from 14,000 ft. You might say that they felt left out considering I had done one, but really what happened was that I phoned the centre up and made a booking for the two of them and they thought I was ordering a take away pizza! Unfortunately they survived! Both in a total state of shock. I have never seen...

Diving and pristine beaches at the Whitsundays

Some nice dives and joy on the Pacific Star, made for diving. A sail boat, but we did not sail, unfortunately. The engine was on 24/7. A 3 day trip, 3 nights. A super view on humpback whales migrating north! In the dawn, dolphins played with us around the catamaran.

Being cold in the middle of a lot of water

We arrived at our boat and met the people that we would be sharing a confined space that swayed a lot. (It really sawyed a lot. Not enough to enduce sea sickeness but enought to fall over an embarassing amount of times) Everyone was really lovely but pretty much all in couples. Thus we decided to act like a couple for the next few days to fit in. It was really relaxing, seeing some beautiful islands and beaches on our trip. We also scuba ...

Are we there yet?

... hard not to enjoy with the full concert band and some really good vocalists....oh and all for free from 100m away!
Road from Rocky up is quite dodgy...bumpy ride (get used to it you say! he he). Good to hit Mackay and do a bit of a shop for minor things that we forgot. Shampoo cleaned the dishes last night!
Of course after to Mackay is the sugar ...
