... the Tasman sea and Pacific ocean collide and make waves! Not something I would want to get caught in the middle of! Unfortunately we were almost back at Nicole's house by the time we realised we had forgotten to return the sand boards to the little old lady and it was far too late and long a drive to turn back around and so we had a rather serious moral debate as to whether to turn around, dump them, keep them, sell them, hand them into the police or ask Nicole what to do ...
Kerikeri, North Island, New Zealand ciaradoonerush... in the late 1700's and made contact with the indigenous Maori people. The Bay of Islands look amazing for sailing (and according to Morgan's dad Gary who sailed here years ago it is) and it was making us wish we were on a sailboat. We had an enjoyable but pretty mello New Years knowing that we were going to get up bright and early to make the 7 hour drive to Rotorua the next day.
Paihia, North Island, New Zealand jamemorgPaihia - KeriKeri Distance 26.57km, Average Speed 16.42 * As leaving Paihia I went to Waitaningi Treaty House where the original treaty between the Maori and the British was signed. * I didn't go in though because I had no where to leave the bike (and it was expensive). * I met another Touring cyclist though! My first on the road since leaving Auckland! - he was ...
Kerikeri, North Island, New Zealand theroad2... the opposite sex. Me and the other girl on our team refused so no points for us. Other people flung clothes off and on again in a frantic bid for points. "Some people really want to win" I commented to a German Guy on our team (almost everyone in New Zealand is German). "Or they just really want to get naked" he wisely replied "That's true" I conceded. This evening I learned that some people are really smart and some people have little shame.
Paihia, North Island, New Zealand patoysandrix... which will make it easier to drive on. There were some big rocks on the road, I just prayed that I wouldn't get a puncture as I didn't fancy trying to sort that out alone, in the middle of nowhere and with no mobile signal. Thankfully I made it to the cape and parked up. I got out, it was rather windy! But just over the little hill in front of me I was rewarded with the most spectacular view! The waves were crashing onto vast expanse of golden sands. There were craggy ...
Kerikeri, North Island, New Zealand phileasbeck... Kerikeri! I've had a couple of days working and its clear the work isn't easy but it's going to beat fruit picking, especially now that the weather has changed. Whilst working I'm staying at a local hostel, it's great, we have our own room for around 7 pounds a night- bargain! I'm looking forward to have a settled period for the next month or so. On our days off we have plans to see all that Northland has to offer. So far we've done the walk from ...
Kerikeri, New Zealand tripofalifetime... really shouldn't be off the coast of New Zealand. So I got to see some very colourful sealife, but the diving expereince itself was a little upset by having to put a 7mm thick wetcuit on and strap 14kgs round my waist in order to counter the wetsuits bouyancy! Could barely move! And the water was cold. No sharks though! Overall, an average experience. Met Sally back at the YHA and we drove back to Auckland to out little city centre flat. (only about 3.5 hours this time!)
Russell, New Zealand carlosb1978... have taken that Honda). There are no shoulders on the roads here, sometimes they have curbs but most of the time it is a white line painted on the left of the road to show you were the pavement ends. The roads drop down about 8 inches if you go off the pavement, and then of course it could be an even longer drop (way down). Sometimes the white lines have little rumble strips coming off them which tell you that you are drifting to the ...
