Our first taste of Paradise (albeit a paradise with litter).
Day 1: Another Night Visitor
The Arwana hotel (the only actual hotel on the beach) was the first we came to and had a room for the night – more expensive than we wanted but it gave us a base and did have a swimming pool. As with all accommodation in the Perhentians it was located on the beach.
We were staying on big island, Perhentian Besar.
Getting into bed the first night we p...
... Cannot reach light unless get out of bed. Not getting out of bed. Tuck sheets in extra firm. Bathroom light? Cannot reach either. Torch? a) not bright enough to make them scarper & b) out of reach in bag on other side of room. Water, if only I had water gun, works on cats, probably rats. No rats live in sewer, not scared of water. Plus no water gun. Jump on bed. Yes.Make noise by jumping. Scare them. Jumping finished. No ...
Pulau Kapas, Terengganu, Malaysia lisaknott... been terrified of those monsters of the deep! I know I'm not the only one with this complex!! Anyway, my first venture to the coral reefs was quite memorable. I went with Willem and Monica (a Dutch/Spanish couple I met at the resort). The three of us stayed together and we were in a pretty shallow area (about two meters deep) when all of a sudden, I heard Monica scream at the top of her lungs (pretty much like Jessica Lange in the ...

... Yeah, you just keep moving if you know what's good for you!" Fish: Yeah, obviously, gazillions of fish in pretty much every color combination you can think of. Other random marine invertebrates: Again, in random shades of color. Monitor lizards: The rocks on the east side apparently made for great lizard sunbathing. I saw probably a dozen each day, most of which were only 1-2 feet long. There was one monster though ...
Pulau Kapas, Malaysia akre... to show her the result! There wasn't a lot more interest shown by the fish & both Andy & Kerry fell asleep on the fishing platform! When Andy woke up he reeled his line in to find he had caught his biggest fish of the day & all while he was out for the count! Ha ha! We've got no doubt that there are a lot bigger fish in the lake but unless you bring your own gear with you we would recommend this place not a lot!
Tasik Bera, Malaysia andynkerry... transport depuis notre chambre (120 RM).
Kenyir Lake, Malaysia isax... bruised myself quite badly. my guide was sleeping on the boat at this point! I thought it best to avoid the other 3 stops after that! However in the two stops I did do, I saw a Bamboo shark (harmless) and also a giant (massive) turtle so wasnt a complete waste of time! Plus it gave me an exciting story to tell the girls when they got back! We didnt stay too long on the island (two nights), so I dont really have much to report, but it certainly was an easy place to spend a few days.
Perenthians, Malaysia gemmatthews... go out on the perhentians as alcohol isn't readily available in malaysia. Its probably a good thing as we needed a break from the buckets (they're evil!). We stayed in a tiny little beach hut which just had a bed and that was it. It was really sweet though. Well it was until one night when zo got up at 4am to go to the bathroom and noticed a random girl standing outside the bungalow. The next morning we realised that there had been some tea-leafing taking place ...
The Perhentian Islands, Malaysia zoe_ellis... in the south to KT or the islands in the north. While people from MACEE and the education ministry had visited several of the schools prior to our arrival to gather information, Imtiaz was not visited, so the two teachers filled me in on some of the details. Imtiaz has about 400 students, making it one of the smallest schools that Fulbright is working with. As a "Modern Koranic" school, it is the only school of its kind in Malaysia and has students in ...
