On the road to Takoradi

We left Accra after 2 days. We headed to Takoradi. Stopped over at Anomabo resort. A nice place to put up. Anais tried the ocean that is cold at this period. The following day we stopped over at Cape Coast to visit the big fort. Its always a lot of emotions to enter the dungeons. Real traces of history. We arrived in Takoradi at some friends place late afternoon. We were happy to see that they were well installed. We spend a few days around Takoradi. There are some of the most beautiful beach...

... probably a 2, 3 year old daughter came up to me had her daughter hold my hand and then proceeded to walk away.
I was incredibly confused.
The little girl (whose name I think was Jessica (real African right?)) was stretching her arms up like she wanted me to hold her, so I did because honestly you cannot get mad at me for holding your child when you just left your child with me. ... on the ground were covered with a dark gritty substance. The slaves were kept in those dungeons for about three months before they were shipped off to the America’s. During that time a lot of them had gotten sick and died because they spent those three months chained up in one spot. One spot where they had to eat, use the bathroom, everything.
So when they died there, a lot of the times they didn’t move them, they just disintegrated there. So that ...

A Day in Cape Coast (A Week of Drum Lessons)

After breakfast, I touch a crocodile (they are used to people), and paddled around the pond.

After leaving the hotel, we went to Kakum Rainforest where we did the Canopy Walk. This is a rope bridge connected at the top of some of the tallest trees in the forest. The canopy walk was engineered by Canadians, who employed local bird hunters ...

July 7 Day 7 Trip to Cape Coast

We arranged to meet for breakfast at nine and it turned out to be exactly the same as the food at the other hotel. After eating, Moussa joined us and we started the drive to Cape coast and Elmina Castle. With a quick gas stop we were on the road. Traffic turned out to be a nightmare as it seemed that all of the residents of Accra were travelling or were walking on the road trying to sell us everything from food to toilet paper. On the outskirts of the Accra, a city of ...

Slavery, forts, beaches and mixing cocktails

... was very bad. The bar staff have an inability to do anything more than one thing at a time. I decided to lend a helping hand. I told the bar manager that I was an experienced bar worker (not true, I have never worked at a bar) and I would be willing to assist in the making of cocktails. How hard can it be, I thought to myself. Anyway, the list of ingredients are on the wall and by this time I had already tried some of them. So, off I went into the world of ...

Going Soft

... would cost on the street. What a way to spend an afternoon. But there were still sights to see, so we headed back to town. The taxi at the gate wanted 5 Cedi ($3) for the 3km drive. He lowered it to 3, but wouldn't meet our price of 2, so we walked. For comparison, our ride to Elmina from Cape Coast was only 1.2 Cedi. The walk turned out to be the best part of the day. It's too bad we didn't have a private photographer because at one point, we looked like the ...

Week 3

Hi everyone! My last entry was brief as the internet around us is very slow! At the school we have been teaching the children basic maths and English. They are only 5-6 so they speak little English. That has been hard work at times, but now it's Easter holidays for 3 weeks so orphanage work it is. The children are really nice and our job is basically ...

... highest mountain (Mount Gemi - less knack**ing); We've seen (and nearly seen) various wat**falls (v**y pretty); We've walked the rope canopy walkway in Kakum National Park (v**y high & a little scary...and not actually that impressive); blah blah blah... In short - v**y little in the way of blood and guts. Even the form** slave castles have been cleaned up so you're left to imagine the blood and guts at your discretion (believe us - that's enough.) Oh yes ...
