Siemp Reap - Angkor Temples

It's been a long time and now I finally have some time to sit down in write an email in a place that actually has electricity, running water, and toilets that you don't have to flush by throwing buckets of water into them! Ahh civilization! 11 NOV - Siem Reap, Cambodia Went to the market, where they sell the same three t-shirt prints in 100 stalls. The most interesting portion of the market was where they sell all the food. Anything and everything is sold here. I didn't have too much of a pro...

Kathryn and I said our goodbyes in Hoi An, Vietnam, she deciding to extend her trip and thus take the time to travel south through the Vietnam beaches and Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). On April 27, I took a car an hour north of Hoi An to Da Nang, Vietnam, and flew from Da Nang to Siem Reap, Cambodia (pronounced Sim Re-up). Da Nang and the coast near of Hoi An were very sandy and scrubby, and were scattered with brick buildings that were either blown up at some point or simply fell down. This coa...

Thursday 15th July Woke in Bangkok and headed off on a 12 hour bus journey to Cambodia. Wasn't as bad as it sounds cause they stop often for food breaks etc. The border to Cambodia wasn't pleasant. You're suddenly confronted with ragged begging children. While waiting to have your passport stamped you read the welcome sign that reminds you that drug traffikers could be executed! Lovely. The tarmac ends in Thailand and the rest of the journey is beyond bumpy. It's just a dirt track, and this i...

... and was the capital of the Khmer empire for a short time. It was originally a Hindu religious center, but now is Buddhist. The architecture is incredible – as is the feat of constructing it. It was completed by one generation in about 35 years, despite the fact that the stones were brought from far away. Angkor Wat is considered the symbol of Cambodia. These temples are much more impressive than the “standard” (sorry if that is sacreligious ...

Arrival in Siem Reap

... and after heading west over the river we settled on an attractive-looking restaurant selling both Western and Cambodian fare. I got a vegetable curry, which was very tasty. After this, we walked north with the river to our right and headed to the Royal Gardens. We were both surprised by how developed the area was, with art galleries, shopping centres and and restaurants all over. That said, the places in between were rather scratty at times, but that's only to ...

I Left Cambodia and Lived to Tell this Story

... the millionth time if you would buy something for a dollar and your answer would be "maybe no" they would immediately respond with a "Maybe YES!" with an added stomp of a foot to the ground. They seemed to really figure out the ins and outs of business making and at times it seemed like you were talking to an adult. But all that changed as soon as you asked them things like their favorite color; their favorite hobbies; the names of their siblings, etc. They were just ...

We visit the largest, Angkor Thom which was the capital of the city after Angkor Wat during the latter stages of the Khmer empire and through the reign of several kings. Other temples we visited included Bayon and Baphuon.

We are extremely hot and decided to head back for an early lunch, then sleep for most of the day before we have an early dinner and an early night.

... singers whining through the public speakers. Two and half hours later, we pull into a rest stop - which turned out to be hardly restful. Looking to stretch our legs, we get off the bus and are instantly swarmed by kids selling pineapple and mango - looks tempting, but there are so many of them, I'm afraid of taking out my wallet and walking back with fifty bags of fruit. Kids engulf us as we try to get to a bathroom ...
