Pooppallys on the backwaters

We woke up early, and Brent went for a walk down the path along the water. I stayed in bed for a while, then woke up and went outside, where the sun almost blinded me. It was already humid and starting to heat up, so Brent was very hot and sticky when he came back from his walk, just in time for breakfast. We've forgotten to write that we have loaded up with insect repellent (100% deet, which is probably going to make our skin slough off) most of the day and at night. There are also plug-in m...

Stunning Kerala

... their intricate makeup then dress up and usually these dancing shows go on for 9 hours luckily ours was only 2 including the makeup session. There is a singer/storyteller also 2 guys playing drums/tablas then 3 dancers its difficult to master they all have to train for 6 years and then the movements of the dancers are so bizarre, its eyes and neck movements for some feelings then hands for description as they don't speak or sing so its all very clever and so much to remember ...

Bliss on the backwaters

... Mum headed off for an ayurvedic massage and I sat on the internet planning our next move. Up until now trip planning has been so easy, Costa Rica, Panama, Thailand and Malaysia all had excellent transport networks bookable online or by a quick trip to the ticket counter. Luxury buses with a/c and arm chair like seats had spoilt me. Here in India it wasn't so simple, plans could not be changed in a whim, buses were windowless and embarkation was a ticketless ...

Alleppey

Arrival at Amma's ashram

We boarded the public boat from Kollam headed for Alleppey yesterday morning. This is a scenic boat trip along the major "highway" of the backwaters' canal system and a nice change of pace from rail travel. At about the halfway point on the 8 hour journey to Alleppey, we spontaneously decided to disembark at the ashram of Matha Amrithanandamayi, one of India's few female gurus who is ...

May Day, Kathakali, and Keralan Murals

... t imagine I'm one of the gentle folk you have plundered and killed in the past. I am Bhima, the invincible hero. I will kill you with one blow, as I killed the powerful Hidimba." They faught as the drumming reached a climax; Bhima killed Baka. The Kathakali performance was complete and the villagers were free from the clutches of the demon Baka, the metaphor for a forced ism, if you will. Happy May Day, you commie.

... text...bet you cant wait..! Once the ritual dances were done and a little posing for the cameras over, the march begun... Drummers, Gods & 43 fantastic elephants.. a superb site... That all done, we were off, dodging **** and pools of pee for the 60 mile journey home.. For the record, it was also India's light festival today and thousands and thousands of candles adorned the little houses, almost lighting our way home.. another very nice sight.

... states in India, divided mainly by linguistic boundaries. Hence, I am from Gujarat, so I speak Gujarati. That is not a hard and fast rule, but works in most cases). Anyway, Kerala happened to be at the top of many lists, including education and tourism. While in hindsight these may not have been the best gauges for a 22 year old to decide his next expedition on I, nonetheless, had heard many great things about the state and always wanted to see the South of India. I left Mumbai on ...
