Today was the day to get out of the city and head to the hills. We had heard such good things about Solvang that we decided to make a day and night out of it. We headed out of Pasadena on the tangle of roads that is the Los Angeles freeway system. The whole freeway system is actually incredibly organized (at least to us who tend to drive in the middle of the morning or afternoon and as far away from rush hour as we can can). There are at least five lanes on each freeway, ...

I got up early in morning and got the 5.10 am free shuttle to Lax airport. My tour was picking us up from China Town at 6.40 am and the taxi from my hotel to China Town would cost me $60 so I decided on alternative route.

On Wednesday, our hosts were ready to take us hiking on a beautiful trail. "It'll be a challenge!" they said - and they were not kidding. We were better off not knowing how challenging the hike would be.

The trip up was quite strenuous, and took us about 1:40 to make it to the top. The trail was a fire road, ...

... ourselves in Santa Barbara. Phew.

The Montecito Inn was lovely and although really close to the freeway you couldn't hear the traffic at all. The rooms were beautiful and luxurious as well. It was very old and Charlie Chaplin had been one of the original owners.

We also discovered the average age in this part of the world is about 65 years and you have to have tons and tons of money ...

... a spoof of Monty Pythons Holy Grail.

The show didn't start for 4 hours so we returned to the hotel to get some warm clothes. On the way we stopped at a mall so Alex could see what deals there were for the Galaxy S4. Quick answer is "none" they were more than we'd seen them elsewhere. Deb bought a fancy little back pack but on closer inspection in the car on the way back to the hotel she notice it was damaged so it had to ...
