... 5.50, 6.50 if you got the fresh fish). AND THEY HAD COFFEE---REAL, BREWED COFFEE. it cost 2 cedi for 2 cups, but it was a splurge that was well worth it--just to have a warm cup of coffee while i sat in a bathing suit on a picnic bench in the shade of a palm-roofed awning, the cold breeze making the heat of the coffee even more alluring....it was my idea of perfect, for sure.

After having lunch, matt and i decided to go for a walk down the beach. we're both pretty ...

... here is different then what I was raised with in the US. We asked him questions about his own mother who he said is a very strong woman, but then he still insisted that men are stronger then women. These conversations with him were indeed a glimpse into what is taught in schools and at home in his community. During my short time here I would say that Ghana is a matriarchal society. Women not only raise the children, but also work side by side with the men in the fields, do ...

A feast for your senses, village life and dancing!

... and it is a peaceful alternative to the organized chaos of nearby Kumasi. We spent one afternoon getting a tour of the village with some of the kids and as the guide books tell you we drew quite a crowd of kids when we walked through the center of town. Four Obroni’s cameras in tote are a sure way to draw in the ever curious and smiling children here. By the end of the hour long walk through corn fields and empty school yards there was a crowd of ...

Day 60 61 - Ghana - Lost Bikini Bottoms

... jungle is ever present on either side. Low clouds hover over valleys giving it that mystical look. Quite nice and cool with the breeze flowing through and moisture in the air. Suzy was most impressed that I did my first gallop today (she runs like a horse - not when we go running in the mornings just if she needs to get somewhere quicker than walking she does this canter/gallop kinda run). So yeah we were crossing the ...

One last day on my beach

... were quite bad in the bar so we moved out onto the beach after a few games and had a good talk. I ended up falling asleep under the stars. It was so awesome except the mosquitoes that kept waking me up. I woke up just before 5am and Emmanuel was still there so we got up and did the first light walk. There were four nests from last night! Busy night for the turtles. I was still hoping for hatchlings but didn't see any sign of them. I ...

Big adventures and fighting boredom

... for our big excursion on Friday. They were very excited and well behaved for us. After the meeting I came back to the lodge to nap but it didn't last long. Emmanuel came by for the meeting we were supposed to have the day before with the guides. I didn't expect them to show though with the nastiness of the storm. So I took Emmanuel on a tour with me as the guide and I have to say I suck as a tour guide. He was very gracious about it though. On Thursday I went back ...

Hard at work

... We separated them into teams and had them build the most realistic turtle they could in the sand. There were some excellent sand turtles but they finished the task too quickly for our liking and were easily distracted by the guests at the lodge, especially when a football game broke out on the beach. We also tried to prepare them for the excursion next week and warned them that being pushy, disobedient brats would land them back on the bus. Hopefully it ...

... to dive through the waves to swim out past the break lines but when I do manage to it is very satisfying and I get some decent exercise. I miss the gym! In the evening we drank Green Turtles, which seem to be vodka, orange juice, and a blue liqueur to make them green. I went to bed pretty early since we are leaving for our weekend getaway first thing tomorrow.

Volunteering

... It was an impressive sight when the chaos went into a perfect march along the street. Soon the younger children in the village were joining in, singing and dancing all around us. When I pulled out my camera to make some videos of the parade, the young kids came running to me, begging for me to photograph them. So I know have plenty of pictures of the village children. At one point I took out my water bottle and was swarmed by ...

On to paradise

... still a lot of people wandering in the area. I ran into the palm trees and hid myself from the road. Another passenger joined me, it turns out the water we had bought along the way didn't just get to me! Back on the road and we were at the lodge in a short time. The drive was much more enjoyable after the wee stop. When we got to Green Turtle we quickly ordered lunch. It was the first time I ate today. Jo gave us our volunteer ...
