Habiéndo estado en Dubai una semana antes en un hotel 5 estrellas y mucho mas barato, el decir que éste lugar fué decepcionante me estaría quedando corta. La comida es más mala que la promedio, en especial la italiana, el restaurante gormet de estrella michelin apenas pasa los estándares de un restaurante regular y el hotel no se da cuenta que no son especiales - quizás porque los estándares en Tenerife sean bajos (ésto es algo en lo que no puedo comentar porque no lo sé), el hotel en sí es bonito y lo será una vez que sea terminado de construir, el balneario no está abierto y tratar de reservar un restaurante no es nada fácil. El director general es muy simpático pero eso no hace ninguna diferencia cuando estas pagando precios muy altos en lo que yo considero un hotel 4 estrellas con servicio de 2 estrellas. La mejor parte fue el desayuno que estaba excelente, y de hecho mis niños lo pasaron muy bien, pero el hotel necesita darse cuenta que tiene un camino muy largo que recorrer para ser un verdadero hotel 5 estrellas deluxe, tendrían que mejorar en el servicio un 100% (esperamos hasta 2 horas por una botella de agua), y ¡cambiar todos los chefs! Lo siento por desanimarlos pero están tratando de ser algo que no son.
Heaven on earth
ABAMA resort ranked... 15 th; I can't believe it.
I too stayed in a 5 star hotel in DUBAI last year ( the ROYAL MIRAGE Arabian Court ) and all I can say is that the ABAMA stands the comparison. ABAMA is more expensive because it is in Europe.
ABAMA is now completed and it simply took my breath away.
The resort is 25 minutes away from the airport by limousine. The setting is just gorgeous with banana plantations on the left and right, a beautiful sand beach with a view of Gomera Island in front and the golf course in the back.
If you want to get away from all the concrete, the ongoing construction and the crowded beaches in Playa de las Americas and Costa Adege, this place is for you. It might seem a bit "remote" to some, but you can always take a taxi or the n° 473 bus ( it stops just in front of the hotel: 2 € 10 per person one way. the ride takes about an hour and it's a nice way to go sightseeing).
I stayed at ABAMA for one week ( may 27- june 3 ) and it was heavenly.
The rooms are immense by european standards and perfectly equiped.
Although my room had a side view, I don't believe there are rooms with "bad views".
The buffet breakfast was exemplary with Moët & Chandon champagne and chocolates for those who wanted to start the day with a taste of luxury.
Lunches ( at Los Chozos and the beach club ) and dinners ( at Verona and especially La Pampa ) were excellent. Dinner for two costs about 60 € with water and wine by the glass.
Apparently, I stayed at ABAMA during low season. Because the grounds are so extensive, I had the impression of having the pools, the beach, the spa all to myself.
It was hard to get away.
To me ABAMA is in a class all by itself and I can hardly see how the hotels in the city can compare. ( Playa de las Americas is not worth more than a day's visit ).
In any case, ABAMA is a wonderful starting point to visit the rest of the island and I highly recommend it.
Potential to be the best - just need to IRON out a couple of issues
Overall an excellent resort, but still some teething problems.
On arrival it's all very grand, glass of champagne and very helpful doormen.
Service was mostly excellent, especially from the doormen, concierge/club abama, room service. I say mostly, the bed for our infant wasn't in the room on arrival and we had to call 3 times before eventually a full size bed turned up, which had to be changed. The service in restaurants was mixed, sometimes difficult to find anyone and near impossible to get the bill especially in the beach club and Italian (although the last night's service in the Italian was good).
The food in the restaurants isn't really up to 5 star standards, the italian was probably the best food.
If you have infants, there is not much for them to do.
Ironing was a complete rip off - far too expensive and we were forced to use the service because they would not give us an iron and ironing board (even with an infant), this is the first 5 star hotel where we have been refused this and we've been to numerous worldwide !
We had a suite which was very expensive, but expansive and nice decor, 4 poster bed, 2 balconies with great views of the Persian garden and La Gomera, 2 flat screen tellies. Brekfast was included and is a superb buffet affair with complementary Moet !!! (be rude not to even though it's brekfast time).
We have just returned from our Easter holiday at the Abama - the weather was really poor 1 sunny day 4 cloudy days and 2 rainy days. Thank goodness we were staying in a fabulous hotel. The service was excellent throughout the resort - and it is indeed a resort you need golf buggies to get you around. There are five or six restaurants to dine at from Italian - Gourmet and the prices reflect. The italian cost around 60 euro for three including wine - which was very good value at 15 euros a bottle. The gourmet restaurant for three including wine cost over 400 euros not cheap !! but worth the experience. Overall I felt the Abama offered good value for money. I was a little miffed that you are charged 10 euros to use the gym and 20 euros to use the spa, when we had already paid over £260 per person per night for Bed and Breakfast. The beach area is very pretty and well run and the 8 or so pools around the resort make you feel that you are in a much smaller hotel. We did play golf a couple of times and the course is quite challenging. Food at the club house again is excellent. Overall we had a great holiday my only negative points are - the hotel is fairly isolated with no paths to walk out, so you do feel a little trapped. Stay clear of the restaurants at nearby Calletta especially the Picses what a rip off.......If you like big well run hotels with plenty of activites the Abama is well worth a visit....
Superb Hotel with fantastic view from Hotel and the Golfcourse
We enjoyed our stay from Dec 22 to Jan 5 at this new Hotel in a calm place away from the touristic area. Our room (Junior Suite) had a fantastic view over the Ocean to the island of La Gomera.
Breakfast was outstanding and the service excellent.
Dinner was served in different restaurants and we enjoyed the Italien Restaurant with value for money (30 Euro menue). The Michelin star restaurant was excellent but much to expensive (over 290 Euro for 2 with little wine)
This is a brand new hotel and it will take some time to polish the service to a *****L resort.
The golfcourse is the most exciting place with fantastic views over the Atlantic and the Island of La Gomera. Very good condition (End of December, early January). Wonderful Clubhouse. Good service. Greenfee is 100 Euro for hotelguests incl. cart with GPS. Just the golfcourse would be a reason to return to this "American Style" resort.
Having stayed in Dubai a week before at a much less expensive 5 star hotel to say this place was dissappointing would be an understatement. The food is worse than average, especially the italian, the gormet michelin star restuarant just about reaches the standards of an average restuarant and the hotel just don't realise they have not got it - maybe just because the standards on tenerife are low(this is something I cannot comment about as I don't know), the actual hotel does look nice and will do once it has finished being built, the spa isn't open and trying to book a restuarant isn't easy. The general manager is extremely friendly but hey that doesn't make any difference when you are paying very high prices and staying in what I would consider to be a four star hotel with two star service.
The best thing was the breakfast which was excellent and that fact my children enjoyed themselves but the hotel needs to realise it has a long way to go to become a truly 5 star deluxe hotel, it would mean improving service 100% (we would wait up to 2 hours for a bottle of water) and changing all the chefs!! Sorry to put a downer on it but they are pretending to be something they are not.
Hospitality? But the hotel has its rules.
A Tuesday around noon in December, we wanted to visit this new hotel to see whether we would stay here in the future.
We were denied access to the hotel because we had no appointment. Only guests could enter.
We insisted, but we were not properly dressed according to Lyon, the guard, because I was wearing a short. Only hotel guests could wear shorts.
Would there be anything else we needed? We would like to see the menu of the El Patio restaurant and to visit the hotel before to decide to stay in the hotel.
Lyon called Daniel, who proposed the solution: he would send us a fax with the menu at our current (hotel) address. It seemed impossible to bring the menu to the gate where we were waiting although two porters were standing at the entrance door.
We received a fax with a one page selection of three courses of the El Patio, but not the entire menu we asked.
- for the hotel: two potential guests were not disturbing the hotel,
- for the guests: we wanted to see the hotel and restaurant but were not allowed. It yields an impression discouraging us from staying in the hotel.
Our policy is to respect our guests and their privacy, in this reason we have a 24h security guard and if you are not a guest and if you have not an appointment you are not allowed to enter.
Would these clients appreciate that someone outside of the hotel walk around to visit the hotel but without the presence of a member of the staff? I do not think so as our guests come to Abama also for these reasons (privacy, respect and confidentiality)
What I could recommend to these travellers is to arrange a previous appointment and it would be our pleasure to make them a private visit of our resort. Or they could also contact us directly through our website or through me.
Truly a 5-Star, but still under construction (Nov05)
This hotel is without a doubt a proper 5 star hotel! The only thing to be aware of is that it just opened November 1, 2005 and there is A LOT of construction still going on. I estimate that less than 50% of the resort is actually finished (ie: fitness center, several pools, some common areas, rooms, villas, landscaping, etc. not ready yet). Once complete, I feel this will easily be the highest standard hotel on the island.
The service was fantastic. Every single hotel staff member was friendly and always very helpful and attentive. The hotel is beautiful and the attention to detail is amazing with no expense spared. The rooms are a good size with excellent amenities (large flat screen tv, big balcony, huge tub with separate shower, double sinks, etc).
The meals at the hotel were top notch and the menu was very creative. By no means was it just standard holiday hotel offerings.
The resort is a huge property built on a cliff with great sea views. Just the one pool was open but it was excellent. Several other pools are still under construction. To get to the beach, they transport you through the resort via golf cart and then you take a funicular down to a very nice beach (all private and owned by the hotel). It is a small cove with a man made breakwater to keep the waves down and it is all golden sand as they brought in tones of it!
A great golf course is adjacent to the hotel (very hilly!).
Once it is fully complete, I have absolutely no hesitation recommending this hotel and I hope I get back one day.
