... on an active role. Within a few days, she called Cristina (club secretary) with a date for the meeting.

2 weeks later, we were off to Vasca. The club president Andy took his bike, and he and my temporary American neighbour in Juan Dolio, Derek (more on him later), drove out to the batey together. Cristina, Victoria, and I took the bus to a batey to the north of Consuelo, called Consuelito. From there, we met Andy and Derek, and hired 2 ...
Vasca, San Pedro de Macorís, Dominican Republic la_profeI am worn out! We've walked til my feet wanted to fall off my legs in protest, and we've bused til I no longer remembered where we were going. And it's only Day 4 of vacation! The running around, while tiring, has allowed us to see three distinct places in the DR: The capital, Santo Domingo; a small coastal town, Bayahibe; and a city in the mountains, Jarabacoa.

We spent most of the first day walking around ...

La Romana, La Romana, Dominican Republic carlosjeremyThis day is a big blur, primarily because I'm writing about it five days after the fact, and partly because I've blocked some of it out. Sara and I spent some time arguing with the guest relations woman (Serena? Selena?) about the room rate and the value we were receiving for it. Sara also complained (she was bad cop) about the service and state of the room. I originally had a long list of complaints here, but I'll save them for ...
Bayahibe, Dominican Republic ceedubbva... the spa, the gym, the Italian restaurant (closed on Sunday, apparently). The spa is beautiful ¡V the waiting area is all dim lights, stone walls, and comfortable chairs. Even better is the Jacuzzi area, which is free if you¡¦re getting some other service. Columns and plants and cool-water Jacuzzis. Sara and I got a menu of services and spent some happy time mulling over what we might do. We roamed the beach for a while and saw a ...
Bayahibe, Dominican Republic ceedubbva... close, there are amazing, awing things. I have become quite jaded to the Caribbean islands due to my experiences with tourist-overrun ports of call on various cruises. I forget that there's more to it. When I got to the hotel, they had a fair amount of trouble finding the reservation, but fortunately I had a bunch of printouts from Sara that helped. However, they want to charge us $55 a day for the all-inclusive fee (drinks, dinner, non-motorized sports...) Our confirmation ...
Bayahibe, Dominican Republic ceedubbva... keep myself entertained with them - but my roommate didn't and the spanish speaking television wasn't working for her.

Needless to say, the remainder of the week turned out to be a bust - and it was a long week. Now I do my research ahead of time to make sure I'm going to a place in the appropriate season. I also know to check out hotel and resort information to ...
Punta Cana, Dominican Republic bookitorskipit... things really started to bother me. The hotel really tries to get you to interact with staff and other guests - which just really isn't my style. I don't like to make small talk and I don't like to be put into these situations...Well, at club med they sit you at large tables with guests and their staff also comes to sit with you as well.

We were the only guests there in our ...
Punta Cana, Dominican Republic bookitorskipit... holidays are less than inspiring but in the Dominican Republic we went on two great days out. The first was a trip out on a catamaran followed by snorkelling. I had never snorkelled before and I was really nervous. The waves felt really powerful and I had to put a lot of effort in just to stay off the rocks and coral. I was so exhausted I was the first one back on board ship. The second day out was one of the best days of my life, racing past mangrove ...
