Drinking from fresh coconuts in tropical paradise

... wedding 3 years ago and loved it so much they bought the restaurant 7 days later. We met a lot of ex-pats there and my theory is that a big lure is everyone speaks English. One day we went sea kayaking to search for the elusive manatee through mangroves. I fell in love with the sea cow maybe because its relaxed, drifting lifestyle perfectly fits with my experience in the Caribbean. We had no luck with the manatee, but we saw dolphins jumping all the way out ...

Monkey River & Placencia

... was fairly deep as I have read that the best place to see them is in the shallows where they feed on sea grasses. I only caught a fleeting glimpse of a snout and was a little disappointed since this was the main reason I took the trip. When I got back to the hotel I put on my swimsuit and spent some time on the beach. Good thing I did because that was the last day of sunshine until the day I left for Honduras.

chicken bus journey - part two

... 2 gatorades, 2 baliades... around 8am ish we jump on a chicken bus headed to the border town Corinita. we were sitting next to the "student code of conduct" sign which read "character matters in West Virginia... from WV all the way to little town Honduras... interesting... It only took 1.5 hours to the boarder... the bus dropped us off at the boarder and we walked about 100 yards into guatemala - there were exit immigration for honduras, but no ...

Niu Countri!! - Belize

We woke up very early today to have breakfast and finish packing our rucksack. The truth is we couldn't wait to get out of Honduras and breakfast made it even a stronger wish. There was a huge storm last night so the current has brought into the beach all the rubbish that was lying around the Caribbean...what a terrible sight (although the locals will be pleased to see it!). Anyway, we had our usual breakfast (el tipico which is frijoles ...

A CALL TO ALL VETERINARIANS

My visit to Livingston reminded me of the dire circumstances for dogs throughout Guatemala and probably in the rest of the developing world. I do believe that the sick and starving dogs are in direct relation to the local economic situation and thus can not judge the people and communities that treat dogs as flies on a pick nick table. The problem with the dogs gets so bad that every so often the police round ...

... is one road and a footpath, both of which run parrallel with the sea.The buildings are all carribean style and painted in pastel shades. We dumped our bags at the Tourist Information centre and set off to find a hotel. Not easy as the place was busy! We ended up paying BZE$100 for our first night which is way over our budget! Still we found a great place that we moved to next day. Our room at C&C Comfort Rooms cost BZE$35 and it was great - we stayed 6 days, long enough for ...

Ya Da Fu We Belize: Dangriga, Belize

... may or may not coincide with a wave tipping us sideways a bit too - when we broke over the wave the boat would drop to the water with a huge crash...and repeat 100 times. A bit crazy but worth it!! The key was beautiful and we were the only visitors to it! We got let off at the dock where we met Tobacco Key George - a resident of the island who loves rum and snorkelling. We got some gear and went out on our own for a bit - we saw a beautiful ...

Swimming with Whale Sharks

... was to swim/snorkel with Whale Sharks. These behemoths grow to 8 metres / 25 feet long (about twice as big as a big great white), so this was going to test our intenstinal fortitude, even if they only eat krill!! So we handed over our $250NZ (OUCH!!!) and went down to the dock on Saturday morning to be told that the weather was too rough, and we would have to reschedule for the next day. Easter Sunday morning didn't look too much better, and combined with the dive ...

Nothing in Hopkins, skip it

Well after Tikal the plan was to make our way to southern Belize where it would be easier for Jerbo and I to part ways for our separate homes. We had heard that Hopkins was a cool town. So we spent the day bussing it over to Hopkins. I can´t remember who it was that recommended Hopkins, but they shouldn´t be allowed to give any more recommendations. Its on the beach, but its not a nice beach (trash lines the entire beach) and the ...
