No Problem, Mon
As a travel agent for over 10 years, I was unsure of booking my mom and sister at this resort. The price was right,(and for those complainers who are comparing this resort with a five-star deluxe) let me remind you that you get what you pay for. The price was actually exceptional, so I was clearly skeptical. However, my mom and sister came back raving about the amount and quality of food. The beautiful pool and beach. (They love to go snorkeling)(and did so every day) Nightly entertainment (that they really enjoyed.) Just everything and anything you want to, the freedom of an all-inclusive. Well, they will always book all-inclusive again after this vacation. My mom says it was the best vacation she ever had! And she's traveled all over Europe and some of the Caribbean! A beautiful mountain view from their room and the beautiful island flora was just breathtaking (I've seen their pictures) And for those complaining about the friendliness of the Jamaicans: my sister has made a friend and penpal of one of the Jamaican ladies she met while there. So, for the complainers, know this: the Jamaicans can "vibe" a person who's stuck up, snooty, and generally a pain in the "you know what". Next time, better stay in San Juan or.....let down your hair down and enjoy the rythmn of Jamaica. This resort turned out to be a great experience for my family and I might go myself next year, as they both want to go back again!
We have just returned from this resort (4/30/02)and found it to have a split personalty. Check in was smooth even though we arrived with a busload of people. The first room that we were assigned to was on the second floor of a two story old section of the property. It looked like an old roadside motel on some forgotten highway. The room was not clean by any standard. There were half filled cups of drinks on the shelves and sand on the floor. When we looked in the bathroom, there was BOWEL MOVEMENT in the toilet. Well...this was not a good beginning but the front desk staff jumped right into action! They immediately re-assigned us to another room. This room was in the same "old" section but was right on the beach facing the ocean. The room was clean but in need of a complete overhaul. It looked dated and tired. The water pressure in the bathroom at "peak times" was weak at best. The great part of the room was the view. It was spectacular! It did not make up though for the paper thin walls that allowed us to hear every utterance from the amorous couples in the surrounding rooms.
The "old' section was also under renovation, something not told to us before arrival.
The dinners in the buffet and Italian resturants sucked, but Chinese eatery was good. Breakfast was really good, and the beach grill presented fairly decent food. Cats roaming the area did not engender strong feelings about good hygiene by the staff. Drinks were hit or miss, often too weak or way too strong.
The true jewels of this resort are the beach and spa. With a full variety of experiences available, it was heaven to have hydrotherapy and a full body message. The spa also included a full workout area out-fitted with up to date exercise equipment. The resort is located on the Montego Bay Underwater Marine Preserve. It is a snorklers paradise. We had a great time off property which is why I would only recommend this resort if you only intend to sleep, use the spa and beach there.
Great place for vacation
I would hope that the 3 people at Sunset Beach Resort in Montego Bay that made our time there would know that my 4 daughters and I would like to thank them very much. They are Richard, Simon and Hugh. The resort is fantastic. It was my second time to visit and I hope to come back again. Thank you
Great place to stay!
My friend and I stayed at the Sunset 4/13-4/20/2002 and had an absolutely fabulous time! The food was excellent, and the drinks were abundant! They made anything you requested and put as much liquor in it as you wished! The staff was all very friendly and extremely helpful. Thank you Ray for introducing us to the "Royal Shop"! The rooms were your average rooms nothing lavish, but none the less clean, besides who goes to Jamaica to hang out in their room? The beach party was fantastic! They have an awesome entertainment group who kept things very lively through out the day and night! The pools are all very nice and clean! The beach was narrow but was still nice, a man raked and cleaned the beach every morning! They offered snorkeling (which was great), paddle boats and boats, no motorized water sports because of the reef! We had an ocean front room in tower B and the sunsets were absolutely beatiful! Sunset offers a variety of different tours and trips you can take for a small fee and also offers you rides to and from Margaritaville at night on the "Boogie Bus" for a small fee! The hotel invites select vendors into the resort twice a week where you can purchase their wares, which are most handcrafted items. Overall this was a fabulous resort and will return in the near future!
Two friends and I went to this resort in March 2002. We had a great time. The buffet got a bit boring but the Chinese and Italian restaurants were amazing. Make sure you make reservations as soon as you arrive or you'll miss out. The pool and entertainment was pretty good. Very nice gym/spa overlooking the ocean. We stayed in section B and it was close to everything. Rooms were clean and comfy. Would definately go back in a heartbeat!
A TRIP TO REMEMBER
We have never been to an all inclusive and in doing the research for where to go, we had decided on the Sunset Beach Resort and SPA in Montego Bay. We decided to check the reviews that were made available to the public and were a bit disappointed by what some of the reviews had to say. So we really weren't expecting too much when we arrived in Montego Bay at the resort. We were in for a very pleasant surprise.
We were there for 4 nights & 5 days and by the end of our first full day at the resort, we were making fun of the bad reviews that this resort had received. In a couple of the reviews, it was stated that the drinks were watered down, well all I can tell you is that when you are at the bar you tell them to keep on poring the booze -they will give you as much as you want. It was also stated in the bad reviews that "you don't have to worry about gaining weight at this resort - the food wasn't very good at all". Again, I don't know what these people expected, I found that the food was amazing, they offer a full buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner at the "Banana Walk", of which, they had food to meet everyone's tastes - seafood, vegetarian, etc. They always offer at least one authentic Jamaican dish as well, if you don't want to try it - then don't. Then they have a snack bar, as well as two "very nice" restaurants, one being Italian and the other being Chinese - the food in both of these restaurants were amazing and the service was like a first class restaurant. Both of the nicer restaurant you require a reservation for dinner, I recommend that you book your dinners as soon as possible when you arrive at the resort, the Chinese in particular tends to book up quickly and is closed on Tuesdays.
The people that work at this resort are the nicest people I have ever met, they greet you when they see you and really care about whether you are enjoying your time there or not. This includes all staff members, whether they are the cleaning staff, the entertainment staff, customer service staff. They really make you feel at home and they truly want you to have a great time while being on their resort. I would not hesitate to go visit them all again. In fact, I am keeping in touch with a few of the staff members from there and we will be going back - homefully again this year.
The resort itself is very clean, the rooms are not that big, but you don't spend alot of time in there anyways, so who cares!!!! There are always people around cleaning up the floors, the beaches, etc.
The beaches are great as well, the only thing that this resort does not offer are the motorized water sports and the reason being that the reefs are very high and it would be dangerous and trust me,you safety comes first.
I felt that I had to write this review because of a couple that I read before going to this resort, how anyone could walk away from there with anything negative to say - I don't understand what they were looking for then because I was treated like a queen when I was there, as were all of the other guests. I really took note of everything at this resort due to the reviews that we had read and could not find anything negative to come back and state to anyone interested in reading this.
Go and have a great time, I know you will!!
Forget dieting and exercising - Sunset Beach is great place to lose weight - food was horrible
Our check into the hotel was rather smooth. Our room was alright, there were some minor repairs needed. I actually lost weight when I was at Sunset Beach because the food was gross (Banana Walk buffet)! The Italian restaurant was good but you are only allowed one visit during your stay. We lived by the "don't ask don't tell" policy and went there twice during our seven day stay. There is also a Chinese restaurant that we made reservations for, but the called us 45 minutes before hand and told us the oven was broken and to make another reservation. The Beach Grill offered burgers, hot dogs, jerk chicken and fries. At least 3 times during our vacation they ran out of clean beach towels. The drinks were very watered down. The hotel only offered Red Stripe beer and Jamaican alcohol that seemed to be pretty weak. I do have to say that the hotel staff was very courteous and prompt.
Great place to stay
My husband and I stayed at this resort for 5 days. I can say
that if you are going to visit Jamaica, this is the place to stay in MoBay!
They make you feel very welcome and part of the scenery. If you want to go
to MoBay, plan on stayiing for about 2 weeks so you can visit all the
wonderful places and experience all of Jamaica!
Great time at Sunset beach....
We went in June 01. It was our first time there and I must say it was great. We were checked in apond our arrival. The staff was great. We both love the water and we did our share of snorkling as well as we tried our hand at the nude beach!
We also we to Dunn's River a must see... We will be back again in March 02. This time we have a plan as to what we want to see and do... It was wonderful and I would recommend it to all. There is something for everyone!
A Vacation Fit For A Queen...Not!
First off, let me start by saying that this trip was in the making for 1 year and was highly anticipated. My cousin and I (female) are both parents and wives, so naturally we were looking forward to our little get-a-way. When we arrived on April 10, 2001 at the SBR&S we were a little taken aback by the surrounding property...no lush vegetation and area locals "hanging out" at the main gate. Check in was relatively smooth because we arrived a little after noon time and our room was ready for us. The first thing that caught me off guard was the fact that I had to leave my credit card # for an in room safe key, normally safes are included with your packages since you're paying all inclusive rates. The fee was $100, and this was in the event if I should lose the key then my card would be charged for that amount. Once we got into our room we were a little disappointed. the door to our room was not the most securest, it was half way hanging off the hinge and it had the nerve to have a chain lock on it. Second, the room was not in the best of condition, the walls appeared to be in deseparate need of a paint job and the bed spreads were dirty (they do not change the bed linens during your stay). The bathroom was not in the best shape either. low water pressure -- not a very good thing when you're next in line to use the bathroom! What most insulted me about our room was the fact that when we looked in the bathroom there was almost less that 2 quarters of toilet paper left on the roll with no other replacements left in the bathroom. we called room service for more toilet paper and towels, but we never received anything. we had to take it apon ourselves to take it from the maid cart. we kept asking about the towels we were told that we could not have additional towels because fresh towels would be placed in the room on a daily basis! now, keep in mind we're in the caribbean were it's hot daily, you're constantly sweating and bathing and you're only entilted to one towel and one
I know it's all inclusive and they want everyone to take it easy on the drinks, but I kid you not those drinks were weaker than weak. The drinks that they didn't know how to make, such as rum runners and planter's punche were too strong and undrinkable. We stuck to the coffe and the Red Stripe beer. the food was ok -- everyday the same choice just served differently. the 2 resturants only serve based on reservations and you can only attend each rest. once during your stay and your choice is limited to one appetizer or soup and your entree. no you can't have more than one! My last complaint stems toward the female staff. They were very rude and very unfriendly. After speaking with other female guest at the hotel they felt the same coldest. Naturally when we spoke with the male guest they had no complaints about the female staff, just the opposite about the men. I was told by one of the locals out there (male) that Jamaican woman do not like american woman -- no matter what their color -- something about we like stealing their men! I think they've caught to many reruns of "How Stella Got Her Groove Back!" And just about every jamaican guy's name was Winston (based on the male character in that movie). I can honestly say that the beach was nice and our room view was also nice. But to me there are a lot of things that can be improved at this hotel. I say go at own your risk. Consider a resort in Negril first.

... walked to the Hip Strip where the tourist shops were selling crazily expensive stuff to the cruise passengers. $15 for a magnet!!!! Then when you find a shop that has ok prices they add commission and/or tax on to it. We wished we had spent more time in the centre exploring than on the hip strip. Doctors beach looked ok, but we did not pay the $6 to go in. The taxi driver really wanted people to go ...
Haven't done a great deal since last time. Our days consist of waking up, having an all you can eat breakfast, feeling crook from eating too much, then lazing around the pool while the boys go up and down the slides. You try and hold off from drinking for as long as you can, but the staff keep asking if you want something from the bar. And they are so damn friendly and nice it's near impossible to say No. There is no responsible drinking laws here! We ...

On Saturday we took a trip into town. They took us to a flea market and we were the only ones there so we got mobbed by the shop store owners. Everyone wanted us to look in their shops which was basically the same as the next one - wood crafts, necklaces and Jamaican trinkets. We bought some souvenirs here and there to keep everyone happy. If you forgot to look in someone's shop, they say to you that ...
... eat half of it. The next day was an early one. We got up at 3:30 and caught a taxi to the airport. It was all self-service which was supposed to be quicker for booking in but it took us twice as long. We flew to Miami and the flight was running late. We only had an hour between flights so as soon as the plane landed we rushed to the departing gate. On the way we heard our names being paged over the intercom system, saying final call for the Browning ...
