We were looking for a warm, relaxing winter get-away for my birthday, and Jamaica fit the bill. I got a fabulous deal on Cheaptickets.com for airfare and accommodations at an all inclusive resort on the North Coast. The Starfish Trelawney isn't in one of the famous (and crowded) locations like MoBay, Ocho Rios, or Negril, but I think this fact turned out to be the reason I really liked Jamaica. We were tucked away on the northern coast, with a 3 mile white sand beach. The only other hotel in...

So many times people just came up and shook your hands and just wanted to chat. There were never any hassles, we never felt threatened, and most conversations ended with them asking if we wanted a taxi, bangles ...

Montego Bay, Jamaica caribbean_fever... with the Jamaican equivalent of the FAA; that'd be a spot of bother, or... it could draw some kind of attention from the other people on the beach; but...

...the Thing, the bug, the virus, whatever- it's still inside me. Sores aren't healing and new ones are opening up. Tender tissues are swelling up in sensitive places. What's in that water any way? Montego Bay, Jamaica hardiek... the worst virus the world has ever seen, Ebola, still lives in some cave in Africa, just biding its time... in expectation. What's found its home in me? Whatever it is, it's wicked, splitting me apart, twisting my view of the world to its own diseased perspective "as all seems yellow to the jaundiced eye." But I've already had HepA, so I should be knock-ulated for life. No matter, the important thing now is to stay warm, drink lots of ...
Montego Bay, Jamaica hardiek... interesting, if busy and twelve hour days are the norm - sure nothing new there. A bit like Digifone in the good(bad) old days - I sometimes feel like I'm in a bit of a timewarp. Hopefully some of the things I learned there over the years stick anyway. Socially it's all good though everyone pretty much lives for the weekends. I have my first invite to the Irish Ambassadors party next Tues too - bring on the Ferrero Roche! Starting to get my ...
Kingston, Jamaica wardieSorry for the dreadful pun incorporated into the title of this section, but a trip to the Caribbean in January 2006 replaced the regular annual January ski fixture, and was yet another encounter with the American tourist, which was to be the last, for absolutely no reason other than ongoing commitments and diminished practicalities. I arrived on the island of Jamaica in poor shape due to a newly-broken collar bone, which I was ...
Montego Bay, Jamaica jollyjetsetter... is currently building a new, larger road. Nobody has any idea when it will be finished. We could see the ocean on our left for almost the whole ride to the lab. We passed through various small towns and finally turned off the road and passed through a guarded gate and arrived at the Lab. We stayed in dorm-style rooms with two sets of bunk beds and a built in desk for each of us. We had our own closets and our own deck that overlooked the coral reef and the Carribean Sea.
Disco Bay, Jamaica caitlinluThis weekend was the annual Volleyball tournament in Falmouth. Last year I played on a team of all girls (Jess and I were the best ones, so you can guess at the skill level), and we were soundly beaten by the Jamaican Defense Force team. This year we had a MoBay team, and the tournament was divided into the "fun" league (all Peace Corps), and the "serious" league (all Jamaicans). The MoBay team didn't do too ...
