Once securely tied up in our slip Patti and the kids took a quick tour of the marina. Rick stayed behind and washed the salt and fish blood off the boat. After showers we grabbed a bus and headed for the quaint little surfing village of Sayulita. It actually takes two buses ...

in, and l been everywhere!!!!
Myself, my wife and another couple just returned from the Riu Vallarta after a week from Dec. 1-8th. I'll do my best to provide an honest review here and I do have to say that I'm neither the hardest or easiest person to impress.
We just returned from a 5 night stay at the Riu Vallarta. We were very pleased again with the riu family of hotels. Great rooms, beautiful beach, awesome weather, perfect location, great service, excellent staff.
We arrived at the Riu Vallarta two days after Thanksgiving for a short 3 night visit. The resort just opened on November 18th and it appeared that all of the facilities were operating. We were served a welcome cocktail in the lobby upon arrival and given our envelope with room key, towel key, etc. We were in our room right after our arrival at the resort. No delays here. The room key was actually a key rather than a card, which was a disappointment to us, as the key tag had the room number on it as well - making it too easy for anyone to enter the room if the key was lost or taken from a beach chair. There is a mini bar in the room stocked with beer, soft drinks and water and a safe in the closet, which is accessible again with a KEY rather than a combination. We received a junior suite poolside, which was a very nice clean room. The bathroom was equipped with amenities such as shampoo, shower cap, hand lotion. We did have a problem with maid service, however. On our second day I had to call the front desk twice to get our room made up. At 3:30 p.m., we still had no service so my husband went down to the front desk and they sent someone up right away. We always tip and leave little gifts for our maid too, so the lack of service surprised me.
Brand New - Great Fun
The hotel opened on Nov 17 ... we went there Thanksgiving Day and we stayed for a week.
Facilities were very nice and it helps that everything was spanking new ... food/animation/sport is what you expect from your all inclusive .. .all good but don't think of a "real" five star hotel.
All things considered we had a great time only complaint was that sometimes the music from animation/entertainment was getting a little too loud but they were getting it under control by the time we left.
This hotel is 2 doors down from the other Riu (Jalisco or something) and is it run pretty much the same way (same food etc) so if you read reviews for the other Riu you can have an idea ... just consider that this one is newer.
Well, I just came back from 7 days at hotel. I DO NOT WANT TO GO TO THE RUI. There theme song fits well at this hotel from hell.
We were not expecting the extent of the construction noise. They are still building 2 elevator shafts. We feel they opened too soon to properly serve guests. Make sure your room is far away from these 2 locations. They are also doing gardening work in the middle of the night. Too noisy for a restful vacation. Food at their Sir George's restaurant is great. It is worth booking a dinner there. The Asian restaurant is so-so.
Just some picture of the ongoing construction
