... one of the most beautiful beaches in the world
Rice, beans, nachos, fruits, and liver
This post is dedicated to food! Midday lunch is the largest meal of the day here with a smaller breakfast and dinner served as well. Here's a typical day of food:
- Breakfast- Any combination of freshly made juice, toast with jam or ham and cheese, cornflakes (a general term for all kinds of cereal), saltine crackers, and fruit
- Lunch- Rice, beans, meat and ...
Reponse: Dominican/Haitian Relations
... It is fairly common, however, for darker skinned Dominicans to be a little bit "in denial" of their African descent. Almost all women get their hair straightened and would probably be mistaken for Haitians if they did not. I personally can't tell until someone speaks; if they are speaking French/Creole they are Haitian. In this way, I think that there tends to be more classism than racism. If someone is dressed in nice clothes ...
Rural Work Retreat
... after our messy day and enjoyed a nice dinner with the community again. Some even got to witness the "cleaning of the chicken" that would become
our lunch the next day. I respectfully chose to pass on that
activity... We spent the evening relaxing with the community (in the dark since the power goes out each evening) and playing dominos (VERY popular in the DR) and cards.
All in all, it was an amazing experience to be able to work with the ...
Back to HOT SHOWERS!
... state, I thought there was a shower running!
After we ate breakfast, we went to the church and waited for mass to begin. We were told that the mass might not start for another hour because there were people still arriving from other communities. So, I went to go take pictures of people cooking (on the Day of the Sick, the townspeople make enough food to feed everone and there were lots of houses with lots of cooking going on!). Unfortunately, ...

Historical Traveler Reviews ClubHotel Riu Merengue Puerto Plata
Fabulous
Went in Feb. It very clean and the service was excellent. Every one was friendly and went out of their way to make you enjoy yourself. The food was out of this world, everything you could think of and displayed beautifuly. our room was very clean and we wanted for nothing. We went with another couple and they agree with us one of the nicest places to go.
Exellent Holiday
Had an excellent holiday at the Riu Merengue in May of 2000. We are going back to the Riu Merengue in September 2002. We had a fabulous time, Excellent food,Great entertainment, Fabulous weather. The hotel is the best we have stayed in and this is our 5th time to the Dominican Republic. If you want a luxurious and relaxing holiday go to the Riu Merenge.
RIU MERENGUE EXCELLENTE!!
I visited the hotel in July this year and had one of the best holidays I have ever been on...
The staff were excellent and entertained both me and my family for the two weeks of our holiday.
The food was very varied and was of a very good standard. Iam used to good food and this was of as high a standard as I am used to.
There was always something to do in the resort between the 3 hotels and there was always something new happening by the pool most days.
I could not fault the hotel in any way and again congratulations to the staff and management for running a wonerful hotel.
RIU MERENGUE EXCELLENTE!!!!!!
One perspective
I just returned from a week at the Riu Merengue and wanted to offer my opinion of the resort. The service was decent in itself but the resort is only 5 star relative to what else is there in the Dominican Republic and not to other standards. Warning: IT IS NOT FOR YOUNG PEOPLE. If you are looking for a fun place with lots of activities, go elsewhere. The Riu complex is good for relaxing but not much else. The staff was helpful but the men were aggressive/perverted and it got a little irritating after a while, especially in a place where you're sunbathing and walking around in swimwear. If you want to participate in other activities, EXPECT TO PAY EXTRA! A LOT EXTRA for excursions and water sports that can run up to $79 USD for Catamaran trips and such. The resort is also more remote than other ones in Puerto Plata. If you want to see the local life, be prepared to pay for cab rides into town, otherwise, be content to stay within the confines of the resort. One last word of advice, the food is pretty bad. If you are accustom to fine foods, you will hate what the resort offers. Throughout the trip, I could only eat one or two items from the buffet because they were the only ones I found edible. If you are the type that enjoys going to whatever large buffet chain offering typical Americana style foods in your area, then you'll probably like it. I heard some people thought the food was great. But of course, that's relative to what you're used to. The only good thing about the trip was the weather - which remained consistently beautiful and salvaged my trip.
PS. Bring watersocks if you want to go in the ocean. The beach is pretty bad too.
Amazing
Hiya I am 16 and have been on holiday to the Riu Mrenengue twice and am going back this year. It is brilliant. The animation team are fantastic could say nothing bad about them at all. They are all really friendly especially Johandy and the dancer Morissio. The food at the hotel is good and the rooms are really nice aswell. All the staff are really nice and would help you with anything. There is lots of sports for teenagers and a club for the younger children. The disco is really good. I would advise anyone to go there its amazing.

I spent 1 week at at the Riu Merengue just this December - what an experience. The resort is beautiful, the food was good, the rooms clean, and the service uncomparable to anything you would ever recieve in Canada. This resort is truly 5 stars!!
Wonderful!
My wife Laura and I have just came back from Riu Merengue Hotel in the Dominican Republic and I just can say that we had the best holiday of our life.Everything is excellent:food, rooms, service and specially the staff, they pamper you!.There was an Assistant Manager in the Reception called Bismar Guzman that really made us feel special. He took care of everything when we arrive and helped us to choose the best trips in the country,he speaks english better than us!.If you go there, ask for him,he will do everything for you as he did for us,always with a smile. This hotel is the best where we have stayed in!,thanks.
