Canary Islands

This summer I went to the Canary Islands with my friends. We did a lot of things there; we went to the swimming pool, partying, to the dune beach, and to the aqua park party...

Also, one day we went to one beach where there were a lot of water sports and we practised the motorskying, parasailing and a los of things.

Finally we come back to Spain with hangovers and our bodies very pained becouse we fell many ...

We can't wait to get started!

We have been working hard to prepare for the Atlantic crossing.

Geoff has become an expert supermarket shopper (watch out Mary!) with the fantastic support of Diane.

Tim has been working on all matters to do with the boat and especially our navigation equipment. We have a yellow brick tracker on board which will be transmitting our position on a regular basis to the arc website http://www.worldcruising.com/arc/eventf leetviewer.aspx

Madeira to Puerto Mogan, Gran Canaria

... Gran Canaria at sunset we were greeted with a dramatic coast line of cliffs in deep orange with clouds sitting in the peaks. We came into the lovely Puerto Mogan at night and Sunshine Maritime's Mike and Mayla assisted Skipper Paul May put Taboo snugly into her berth. Another successful, safe and healthy trip in preparation for her Atlantic crossing in November. Thank you to the crew of Skipper Paul May, crew Roger, Dapo, Martin and myself (Louise). Good luck Transatlantic Team ...

... and Mauretania. The Canary Islands (there are 7 main ones) receive the "Sakkara (sp?)" wind that blows across the Sahara to the Islands. We are 200 kms off the African coast. When the Sakkara blows the temperatures on the Canary Islands can reach up to 45 degrees. We has a nice toasty high today under blue skies of 36 degrees.

Anyway, the Canary Islands were inhabited for 2500 years by cave dwellers, there were ...

    Superb holiday

    from anonymous

Just had a week at this hotel for the first time in July 04. First class hotel, very clean, wonderful food, quality drinks, superb entertainment day and night for all ages, lovely rooms, great location, customer service exceeded expectations, very well managed. We all had a great holiday. Nothing more to say but thank you RIU.

    Excellent !

    from John_Clarke

An excellent hotel. Staff are brilliant, hotel is nearly new (3 yrs old), immaculate. Food, again, excellent. All Inclusive is exactly what they say at this hotel, ALL INCLUSIVE. Try it or miss out !

Area is pretty new but well placed, a couple of Euros to Playa Del Ingles if you want to mix with riff faff or if you are like us, like a drink but with "normal people" not idiots, the local bars served us well.

Love the Riu Clubhotel Gran Canaria

We have been to the Riu Clubhotel three times in the past 2 years and it just gets better and better.Would recommend it to anybody. Staff friendly andefficient and the meals are out of this world.Looking forward to going back soon

    A WONDERFUL HOLIDAY

    from anonymous

First time in a Riu and if Club Hotel anything to go by then we won't be using any other group of hotels. The management couldn't do enough for you, the staff very friendly, the animacion team work outstandingly hard whilst always having a smile on their faces and the food and accommodation superb. Can't wait to go back, will be booking up asap.

Thank you RIU Club Hotel Gran Canaria.

    Excellent holiday!!!

    from markpool

My wife and I have just returned from the Riu at Melonaras and we really enjoyed the place.

The position is excellent, a lot of better quality hotels are nearby and it was nice and peaceful, however if you wanted loud music and clubs etc. a 4 euros ride in a taxi and your in Playa Del Ingles.

The food was very good and plentiful, the hotel also does an extra dining option where they serve you at the table, we found this best at night.

The overall service was very good from the staff and the evening entertainment was as good as it gets in a hotel.

There is a small gym with a few weights and a couple of treadmills and stairmasters, not brilliant but adequate for a workout.

The lobby has internet access so you can keep in touch with home etc.

There is building work next to the hotel on one side, so beware if you get allocated a room on the outside to the north, we did and demanded and got a different room with a pool and seaview for an extra 10 euros a day, well worth it.

Weather wise it was superb, we were there in January and we had glorious sunshine every day except one, it does get a bit chilly at night though and the other bonus, no mozzies to be seen.

Finallly there are some nice bars and restaurants close by which we used and there is a couple of good beaches within a 10 minute walk on the new promenade.

Overall a lovely holiday and well worth going.

Brilliant! Don't book so that I can ensure there's room for me!!

An excellent hotel with fabulous facilities and delicious food. The staff are only too happy to ensure your stay is positive. The best hotel/holiday I've ever experienced. The entertainment team put on a fabulous show most nights, but not always brilliant. No need to bring a towel, the hotel provide towels in rooms and for sun lounger. This hotel provides all the little extras. I am looking forward to returning!

    A Nice little break

    from anonymous

This is the second time we have stayed in a RIU ClubHotel and again it was an excellent experience. The hotel was clean, the staff polite and helpful, the catering superb and the entertainment from the animation team was excellent. Just a few points to note:- If you are british you will be in the minority, most of the guests were German but this is not a problem as everything is in multiple languages and there are plenty of sun bed to go round and to be honest the rudest people there were probably the Brits anyway (sigh). The hotel is next to the beach, however it is a rocky beach that I would not want to use. The nearest sandy beach is the dunes some 800m along the seafront past the Faro lighthouse, however given that this is an all inclusive hotel you probably don't want to move away from the pool and all the refreshments anyway. On the positive side if you do go to the beach there are plenty of facilities there with a little shopping centre there to cater for every taste. We recieved a letter about 2 weeks before departure saying there were building works next door but the only thing we noticed was one loud bang from the site in the whole week so it really was a non-event. We dont have any children but if you do then they are well catered for, the animation team have dedicated entertainment for them and even their own pool and disco for them in the evening. To sum up, I liked it and would go there again.

    Our best christmas ever

    from anonymous

My husband, two girls and mother-in-law have just returned from this wonderful hotel. Food was far superior to that we have had in 5* All Inc Hotels in the Caribean. Staff all bear a smile and are extremely helpful. Quality and selection of drinks first class, public rooms and bedrooms very clean and well furnished, including comfortable beds ! Pool area spacious and spotless, evening entertainment well produced but somewhat repetitive, but no different to most hotels in Spain. All in all though fantastic, no problems and would return especially Xmas time which they made so so special.........

    The best holiday ever!

    from anonymous

This is simply the best hotel we have ever stayed at. The hotel is all-inclusive with a rating of 4 star+ but quite simply feels like 5. The service everywhere was first class; the rooms spotlessly clean, bristling with all mod cons such as air-conditioning, hair-dryer, power shower, numerous razor and power sockets and all tastefully decorated. The food was amazing, (in fact there is so much on offer you have to pace yourself to stop rolling over!!) As for the entertainment well, how many times do you hear about in-house entertainment that simply isnt. But at the Riu Club boasted a dedicated entertainment or animations team putting on first rate shows every night in the comfortable show bar. The only whinges we could think of were no tea or coffee faculties in the rooms, and perhaps one more lifeguard or two around the pools. Apart from that we could find no fault and even sought out the manager to congratulate him on the hotels amenities. Something we would have never done in the past. We will DEFIANTLY stay again!!

    Relaxation at the right price

    from anonymous

We had a 14 day break at the Club Hotel Riu Grand. The rooms were excellent, the service first class. The all inclusive excellent value for money. The setting superb. The beach an easy stroll and worth the walk.

After a hectic year with work and a big wedding in the family, my husband and I wanted a relaxing holiday. We had been to Maspalomas the year before and were impressed with the standards of the Riu hotels. I did not realise that I had booked an all inclusive, I thought we were going to the sister hotel - I'm glad I made that mistake. I dont think I would have the relaxing ambiance that was at te Club HOtel. We will definitely go again.
