Unforseen stay in Cancun

A travel blog entry by rachelstravel

Nobody likes flight delays! Well, ours caused us to stay overnight at the Riu Caribe on the Cancun hotel zone. Young party resort with a modern vibe, we got to explore the hustle & bustle of the Cancun hotel zone. Busy, party & loud! Ohhhh, to be young again! Got to see the beach for 10 minutes and eat at the buffet before heading back to the airport to catch our flight!

Enjoying our last day here in Cancun!

Day 7

Having heard that there was a fairly large shopping village called "La Isla" further down the street from the “Riu Cancun” where we went by bus the other day, we decided to pay it a visit right after breakfast. After all, today was our last day here in Cancun and I just wanted to buy some more souvenirs.

The bus …

Day 6 - afternoon / evening

From having just snorkeled, my hair was all wet and tangled but this didn't stop me from exploring the many streets of this tropical island even though I must have looked a mess without any makeup on!

Many small cafes and terraces were seen on both sides of the narrow alleys as well as souvenir shops …

Sail away to Isla Mujeres!

Day 6 - morning

From my room's balcony, in the far, far distance, I could see the Isla Mujeres at night all illuminated with thousands of lights. It had this special attraction force that made me want to step foot on it and see what was there. After inquiring at the concierge tour desk, I was informed that tours on a catamaran were …

Paying a visit at Riu's other sister hotel!

Day 5

Since we were staying at the "Riu" chain of hotels, what do you think this meant! It meant that we had access to all of them situated right here in Cancun and this, just as if we were staying there! We could use their facilities, pools and beach, we could even eat there and have tons of cocktail drinks all day long! All we had to do …

    Best Place To Stay

For the past two years my friends and family have stayed at the Gran Caribe Real Resort and Spa and have enjoyed it so much that we are now planning our third return trip to this hotel an will be staying for two weeks the next time. I can't say enough about this hotel and recommend to anyone I hear talking about going South and in particular Cancun - I would give it a 5+ rating - the hotel staff are excellent and can't do enough for you - all inclusive is the only way to go - the junior suites are roomy and large and offer a magnificant view - I have requested the floors and the location of the rooms I've wanted and have always been given my request. The food is excellent, the water is purified in the hotel, drinks are excellent and yes the pizza and chicken wings are wicked! I've talked to a lot of travel agents and people who have stayed at this resort (and others) and would highly recommend this resort over any that they have ever stayed at. Take the chance and stay there you won't be disappointed!

    Loved it, would definately recommend

Went to the Gran Caribe in Feb 2002. Had a great holiday. Enjoyed the food and the activities in the day. The hotel and pool are beautiful and the staff really were wonderful, they couldnt do enough for you and were so friendly. The room was lovely and all rooms have a great veiw of the stunning beach and sea. I would love to go there again.!

    BEWARE of vacation club scam

Beware of the scam they have going at this resort. They get you to take a tour of their facilities and then high pressure sale you into a contract for a vacation club with promises of low air fare rates, four free weeks of vacation time, and buy-back vactation time through an american realty company. None of this is true! If you fall for this scam, you could be out $15,000 an up.

    We are going back!

My husband and I have been going to Mexico every year for the past 6 years. July 2001 we went to the Gran Caribe. After staying at the sister hotel the previous year Costa Real. We had the best time. Our daughter, who is 7, is still talking about it. The Sports and Entertainment Team was great. They had games all day and put on great shows nightly. The food is GREAT... The hotel is beautiful. We loved it so much we are going back June 13, 2002. We totally reccommend this hotel. We do the All Inclusive so I do not know about EP. The rooms were fully stocked with cokes, water and beer (if requested) The pizza, they serve at lunch, is great.

    Great place

We just returned (Jan 19,2002) from a week at the Gran Caribe Cancun. Great place..have been several places in Cancun, and this is by far the best..4 couples went ages from 21-60...something for everyone..food was great, room is great...nothing negative to say about the place

    Would go back again

Went in February 2001 and would go back again. Only problem we had was that 3 out of our four rooms were not ready at the stated time. Came back 40 minutes later and they still were not ready. They put our group (all family) in the Presidental Suite for the night. Three individual rooms. Very helpful staff. Great food. Reserve pool chairs early by placing shoes or article of clothing or towel. We had one incident with a topless swimmer at the pool and she was told to put it back on by the staff.

Beatiful resort - Staff needs work

We stayed here 12/01. This is a beautiful resort. Nice beach. Lovely pool. Our problems were with the guest services staff. We were treated rudely, never given any hotel information or even where our room was! Our luggage was left out front all day until we went and got it!

If you stay here book the all inclusive. We didn't and were out of the loop. Hotel was not prepared for making out bills for food and drinks. Caused a lot of problems and delays!!

Hotel caters to a young crowd. Very noisy a lot of drinking, topless women, etc. Our room backed up to the lobby and we heard LOUD music and noise every nite until after midnight. There is NO sound insulation in the rooms!!

Based on our experiences, we wouldn't ever go back there again!

Beware of real estate sales pressure

We recently went to Cancun on a family vacation. The all-inclusive package, the available day trips, the accomodations, meals and recreation opportunities were amazing. A++++.

But beware, the hotel will leave a note at your door after your first night's stay inviting you to pick up a gift basket and a tour of the facilities that should take about one hour. If you show up, be prepared to spend half the day under ever-increasing pressure by an endless line of sales closers trying to sell you vacation packages for $15,000. As polite people we put up with it through lunch and into about one hour of the "tour". Stupid us.

It's too bad that the tour was a scam. They have so much available that a nice orientation tour would have been nice.

    Gran Caribe Real

We stayed here Dec. 2001. We had problems!! The hotel itself is beautiful. The hotel is new and very attractive. Nice rooms. The problems we had were primarily with the staff. The front desk staff were not helpful! Didn't even tell us where our room was! We booked the EP plan. Not the all inclusive plan. MAJOR PROBLEM. Hotel is not set up for EP. No one could tell us prices and getting a bill was difficult! Everyone else was on the all inclusive plan. Had we know this we would have never stayed here! The pool ran out of towels. The junior suite rooms (which cost us more) were the same size as regular rooms, but with larger balconies! And since these rooms backed up to the lobby we had LOUD music until midnight each evening from the lobby bar! Very young crowd at this hotel. Alot of drinking and topless women. Not good for our 7 year old daughter. By the end of our stay the maid wasn't making up our room until 3:30pm! That was after two requests as well!! Checkout was another problem with staff. Paid our bill and the clerk just walked away? Never said anything! Then when we tried to leave we were stopped by the bellman and asked for our checkout card? Never got one! We had to wait 20 minutes and still never got one! So the bellman said we could leave. We will never stay here again!!

    Beautiful resort

I have been to the Gran Caribe Real twice last year. It was a beautiful hotel, one of the most beautiful all inclusive resorts in Cancun. The beach was all white sand, and there were plenty of beach lounges available to lie on. If you didnt like sitting on the beach then the pool was always a good choice, it was huge!! The service and staff at the hotel was excellent, everyone was very friendly and if you didnt feel like going to one of the three restaurants for lunch, the staff would take your order and bring it to you by the pool or on the beach. I didnt have any complaints about the food but a couple of my friends didnt enjoy it at all. The food did mainly focus on Mexican quisine, and on the buffet "international nights" they really didnt enjoy it. This hotel is definately a first rate place to stay, perfect for younger and older people alike. I would also make sure that you request and oceanfront view because you cannot beat it, or you may be stuck in a room that has lagoon view or half lagoon and half ocean, and its just not the same. The activities directors were also very funny and tried very hard to get everyone involved in the many sports and games offered. I would definately go back again to this resort.
