Historical Traveler Reviews Playa Blanca Hotel & Resort Farallon
Great relaxing time
the resort is very clean, and spacious, pools are great, lots of room on the beach, and around the pools. the food we found was very good in all of the 4 places you can eat. the staff where very good in all aspects of the resort. friendly and very kind and went out of there way to make sure you are enjoying your time. melanie our air transat representative was excellent. we went on the panama express with the train ride which was very good. also took the sunset cruise on the sail boat which was excellent especially if you have never been on a sailboat. rooms where a good size with lots of room. we had a view of the beach and ocean which was very nice. lots of hot water and excellent cleaning staff. we have been to quite a few countries in the carribean and this is the first time that we did not have to take a imodium. water is drinkable and they also had bottled water in your room, and also every building had a ice machine. drinks where good and not shy of the rum or whatever you wanted. we where very happy that we booked this resort after hearing problems people had at the decameron. it was a very relaxing resort with very good staff. we where ther the week of feb 14 2005. i would recomend this resort to people especially if you want a smaller resort that is not over crowded. never had any problems of being packed for any of the meals. yes we would go back to barcelo and we will, maybe go back again next year. very happy with our resort and the weather was wonderful, 95 degrees every day!!!
excellent- ottawa canada
We stayed at the Barcello from Jan 24- Feb 7th and had great weather for the 2 weeks. The occasional day of clouds were welcome due to the extremley hot sun!!! We were located in Bld 6 and had some hot water issues or shall we say lack of hot water, this happened about 6 or 7 times during our 2 weeks. We did talk to other people who had hot water the whole time so we think it just depends on the Building.
The food in the buffet is o.k. that is about it...The breakfast buffet lacked in many ways one of the biggest things we all missed was bacon!!We did ask for some and managed to get it 3 times in 2 weeks. The pool bar/restaurant was excellent. Juan Carlos & Joanne are two great bar tenders and we would love to have service like they provide in Canada. The food at this restaurant is great, the french fries, burgers, grilled cheese and all the other goodies that they make are awesome!
The a la carte restaurant is very scary!!!! We did use all 4 of our reservations but should have stopped after the 1st time... The food is brutal and not cooked very well...Out of all the staff these were the least friendly.
The Entertainment staff we cannot say enough good about!!! Ryan,Peter,Valentine and the rest of the crew are absolutely the best we have ever come across on our travels and we travel a lot!!! Remember these chico's and chica's put in huge hours each and every day and only get 1 day off a week... Please participate with them as this makes their job that much easier. We have never come across entertainment staff that would sit and talk and try to teach so much about their country and language and this was very nice and very much appreciated. We can only hope that the Barcello resort realizes just how fortunate they are to have the staff that they do and that they treat them accordingly. When we go back to Panama we will go to the Barcello not for the food ,beach, pools, rooms but for the great staff and to see the friends that we have made and miss... Please remember to treat them right!!!
Good resort, Great country
The hotel and resort was great, like the other reviews I was a little dissapointed with the lack of chairs and shade available. The rooms, staff and food were excellent. The resort is very quiet and quite relaxing.
If you dont' like long flights and bus rides dont' bother, it did not bother me because I like to see the country side and there is a great mountain range on the way. I signed up for a few tours (Panama express train and the Jungle boat excursion) and they were both great with good trilingual guides just be ready for substantial transit times especially for the Panama express.
The farallon region is very hot and arrid, the resorts are there because you will rarely see rain so have your sun block ready. this hotel has only been open for 14 months and it will double in size within a few years, go while its still small.
p.s. The tap water is drinkable so dont' worry about closing your mouth in the shower or brushing your teeth with bottled water.
The hotel itself is nice and clean the staff are excellent ..
if i have to complain it would be the distance from the airport to the hotel.. (which is very secluded) is 2hrs and the buses are not the greatest. Also the 2hr run is a pain if u want to do any excursions off of the resort or head out for an evening. THIS NOT A PLACE TO GO IF U WANT A PARTY.
The food was amazing , best i have had at an all inclusive and this is probably my tenth one.
Being that this hotel is new there is still some work to be done ,, although the grounds are well kept.
Would i go to Barcelo again NO.
But if i had a wife and 3 kids I would.
Also remember u are not on the caribbean side of the ocean , so there is no light blue ocean and white sand.
Good Resort but not for everybody
Hotel itself is really nice, clean rooms, superb service, good food, a lot of people I've talked to enjoyed it but would not return for 2 weeks since the Hotel is very secluded.
Red Flag was on most of the time, I did not go in the ocean once, don't expect white sand caribbean beach.
If you plan on taking any tours, except for the Anton Valley one, expect a 2 hour bus ride to get there and another 2 coming back.
Hotel lacks chairs and umbrellas, people get up at 6am to reserve their chairs, if you are not one of them, you might not get any in the shades before late afternoon, the sun is really hot, shade is a must !
Would I return to Playa Blanca? NO
Would I return to another destination in Panama ? defininately, great shopping in Panama City and the people are very friendly.
Good but not 4 stars
Nice and secluded on the Pacific side of Panama. The trip from Tekumen airport takes about 2 hours but the trip is worthed through the city of Panama over the canal and westward to Rarallon. The nearest city is Penenome about 20 minutes where one can buy some trinkets, not much as far as local art.
The resort is clean but seams to lack a few palm tree. There are two good pools one with a bar. many activities during the day, seadoos, 4 wheel mini bikes, horse, catamaran, aerobics, spanish lesson yoga etc. The ground could be better kept and the lighting at night is not adequate. The beach isn't quite white (Blanca) and in some places a scratching the top will reveil black sand. The water in the Ocean some day was quite rough and the red flag restricted swimming in the ocean. I haven't seen any jelly fish but it was the main reason for raising the red flag at ocean's low tide. There is a good beach buffet restaurant, good service for drinks and food. I wish there Pina Colada were better. It was made using a Pina COlada Mix that felt rather powdery with not much coco taste and was too thick for my taste.
The buffet restaurant is good. Lack food service area like other resort we went. People lined up for serving as other place there were islands with salad, entry fruit and pastry. The restaurant was cleaned and the service was excellent. The beef or other red meat tended to be a little tough. Seafood, on the other hand was fresh and tasty. The coffee was not equal, was not sure why there were no mangoes. Fruit in the morning was limited to Water Melon, Pineapple slice, cantaloupe and papayas. Some morning some of these were missing from the list.
The buildings were clean and the room lacked a bar fridge. Towels one day was limited to two big one and had to ask for face towels and hand towels. The rooms are adequately air conditionned. The water pressure in our room on the second floor (out of four) was weak and one evening the water was cool not to say cold.
The lobby doesn't have the haws of some 4 stars hotel and is quite simple with a main desk and few sofas. The personel is mostly unilingual spanish and few spoke english. Remember that south america had its summer holiday after Christmas until March or April so this is when you will find the most kids at the resort if you don't mind.
The shows at night offer a good varity of Folkloric, Carribean and south American dance well performed. Take the time to do the trip to the rain forest, the Canal, Panama city but expect a trip in Busses that can be at least an hour long.
Enjoy your trip
Not exactly 5 * ,BUT not a bad place to stay
I am a picky traveller,so I think this review will be helpful for those type of people who like perfection on their vacation, especially when they are byuing 5*.
We were there from Nov 22-Nov 29th.
1. The ocean was not very accessible. I personally did not swim even once there. The water is not clear ,there is a lot of debree coming from the mountains into the ocean .Red Warning Flag was on almost all the time ,because of dangerous fish -I beleive it has been ellectrical scuts.
2. There is only one A la cart restaurant and it is not very good .We had to wait 1 hour to get a salad ..and the restaurant was empty .
3. The entertaiment was 95% in spanish as the entertainers did not speak good english.
4. On the 3rd day ,a lot of local residents came to the resourt with a lot of kids and noise . That was a shock as the place was very quet before that and we thought it will stay this way ..but NO. I don't think that 5* hotel ,would NOT practice that. Besides ,as a English speaking tourists felt abandoned and 2nd priority.
5.I personally did not like their breakfast
6.This resort is located in the very remote location -2 hours by Highway from Panama City -so you would end up taking tours if you like to see more of Panama.
Taxi is very expencive .I heard different prices :From $ US 90 -200 for the round trip.
I don't recommend the CITY/Shopping tour as they bring you top the most expensiver mall in Panama city .Prices are like in Canada or Us. Purses 300 +,Shoes 100 +.NO Point -it it a Myth.!!!! about Panama being a Shopping Paradise .
Also:Flight home was almost 8 hours..as we had to stop in Montreal first ..this was just too much ..
The food in the buffet was overall very nice-fish,meat etc..but of course the selection is not 5*
The rooms were very clean
2 nice Pools
The City/Canal Tour is educational and worth to attend (65 per person) and Anton Valleu is nice too
The staff is nice and friendly.Very nice waiter in the buffet :Emilio -speaks good English.
Overall rating of the hotel: It is a NEW 3.5*
However ,the overall impression is pleasant.
Have a great vacation!
Absolutely no complaints! Great staff, great food, spotless rooms.
Note: We met several couples who stayed at the Decameron resort next to the Barcelo and from what they told us the Barcelo was much better. Some complaints I heard from those who stayed at the Decameron was that is was crowded, not as nice as the Barcelo, and had mediocre food. However, it is a more of a "party place" so it may be fun if that is what you are looking for.
Also, if you can get there go to Pipa's Beach Bar. A little shack right on the ocean that servers huge lobsters and shrimp. It is a little hard to find...have a taxi driver turn down the road to the Decameron, and keep going all the way down. You will go through the town of Farrallon. The road deadends at Pipas.
If you are looking for a tour guide, my husband and I found a great tour guide/driver who took us all over Panama City and between our hotels (the Gamboa, Barcelo, and Bristol in Panama City). We ended up hiring him for two days total. I absolutely must recommend him...He speaks excellent english and is very knowlegable on virtually any aspect of Panamanian history/politics and ecology. He also adds a unique perspective that you simply cannot get from the guidebooks!
His name is Carlos Aleman, and his cell phone number is (507 country code) 645-7075. His e-mail is ----------------------.
Excellent. I had the best time ever.
Superb hotel. Great food and lots of drinks. The best wet bar and pools. Friendly service; they make sure that you'll have the best time of your life. Highly recommended!!
We where there Jan 2004 and we had no complaints there was four couples and they gave us rooms all on one floor. Rooms very clean. food excellent service was top notch. The only thing I could maybe say the night time shows need some more work but being a new resort they will improve.
If you want a nice holiday give it a try we really enjoyed ourself. Great deep sea fishing the guys caught 11 fish and the chef cooked it up for our dinner that night.

... I tried to envision what this would be like on a regular basis. Only an hour off the Pan American highway, and it was another world. These people have no electricity, no running water, they hike the hills regularly to obtain meager supplies at small tiendas scattered around, and they battle natural impediments like large snakes, tarantulas, blistering heat, and steep precipices usually exacerbated by torrential rain. This made me appreciative of my commute by bus to ...
