Historical Traveler Reviews Jewel Runaway Bay Beach & Golf Resort
Me(30) and my boyfriend (25), visited Jamaica for the 1st time last October on a late deal. Bit apprehensive at first as i've never done an All Inclusive holiday before. But definately would recommend doing one to anyone. We flew into Kingston Airport and had a 3 hour transfer which we where dreading but ended up enjoying as you got to see alot Jamaican scenery and got a feel for the place. On arrival we where checked in instantly and shown to our room. First impression of our room was wow, huge bed could have slept at least 5 people in it, apart from that the room was clean, bright. Bathroom could have done with a bit of updating. Food, I have to agree with a few of the other reviews that the main buffet restaurant was very repetitave and we only ate their the first night. Italian restaurant was fantastic and really enjoyed the food and the service was very good. The Stargrill was only open a couple of nights during our stay and was always very busy, but definately worth waiting for as food was fresh and tasty. The beach grill was also very good, loved the Jerk chicken and the burgers are some of the best i've ever eaten. Beach, was gorgeous, long, sandy and plenty of room for privacy. Sea was clear and we snorkelled nearly every day. Nightlife, we had a wild time. Entertainment staff where superb and made a great effort in getting everyone involved. We went to the toga and the PJ evening and both times we had a great laugh. All the bars served us premium spirits and the bar staff where incredibly friendly and helpful. The never slacked on any of the alcohol in cocktails. Needless to say we took full advantage of this.We did the excusion to Dunns River Waterfall and I would definately recommend this trip to anyone as it was fantastic. The only complaint that we had was there was no where to eat after restaurants had closed. We both fell asleep one afternoon and did not wake till gone 11pm feeling starved and unfortunately we couldn't get anything to eat anywhere. Would be good if they offered room to try Jamaica and if your looking for a reasonably priced 3/4* property then definately try this resort. We are visiting Jamaica again in May but this time we are staying at the Grand Lido Sans Souci resort will let you know how it goes.
Was good but also had some problems
First of all, I am a first time traveler to Jamaica and to an all inclusive. I am also in my early 20's and don't have alot of experience travelling. All of this, I feel has a big deal to do with my review b/c I don't really have much to compare it to or have really extravagant taste. Anyway, I just got back from Breezes Runaway Bay yesterday. All in all I had fun, but there was some things that took me by suprise. I did alot of research and thought I knew alot about the resort, but going there was alot different than what I thought...-The ride from the airport to the resort was not that bad. Yes they do drive a little crazy at times but like they say, just close your eyes and say "No Problem" -We were offered drugs alot! Everywhere we were, even swiming in the ocean. -The food was not that good, and Im not a picky eater! The buffet was pretty gross and really repetitive. Martinos was good, and so was the Starlight grill. But most of the food is centered around the buffet. The beach grill was awesome and we ate there most of the time. -The drinks were not watered down AT ALL! Actually some were too strong, and my group and I are pretty big drinkers! No problems in the drinking area though!-The hotel employees in general were not as nice, helpful or as fun as I thought they should be. The service was pretty disappointing.-The people of Jamaica in general, that we came in contact with outside the resort, were sooo nice.-Our room was alright, to me it's not that big a deal b/c your barely in there anyway. There weresome tiny ants in the room though.- The resort grounds were really nice and well kept. The beach was beautiful, the water was clear and the weather was great.-There wasn't alot of young people. The range was like 35 to 65.-The nightlife sucked! It was not very fun at all. The entertainment coordinators were boring and I don't think did a very good job. You had to make your own fun.-Every activity they claim to have, they did.-It is very, very windy sometimes.-They offer alot of tours. We choose Dunn's River, Tubing in the Jungle, and Margaritaville in Ocho Rios. Dunns river was so cool and definitely worth it. The tubing was fun, and you really get a feel for the real Jamaica. Margaritaville was a real disappointment. It was boring and pretty much empty when we were there. We went on pool party night and there were 2 people in the pool. My advice would be go during the day.*Theres much more, but I dont want to write a novel. I really feel you need to experience it for yourself, b/c everyone has a differnet opinion. I hope I could be a little useful though. I really enjoyed my vacation and wish I was still there! I feel I definitely got my moneys worth. The trip was amazing and I have no regrets. Im not sure if I would go back to Breezes, maybe!! If I went to Jamaica agian I would like to try somewhere else, probably in Negril. Jamaica was cool though and the people are so friendly. If you want a laid back, no worries vacation, Jamaica is perfect.
I want to start by saying how important I feel these reviews are. I actually went to Breezes Runaway Bay in April and wanted to post my review for everyone, but I had forgotten until recently in my quest for my next vacation spot.
I will also let everyone know my age which is 25 years old because that is important as to where you are staying and what your expectations are. My boyfriend and I went to Runaway Bay because he was recommended this resort. (older resort) not good for singles. Age range 30's - 60's
Airport trip to resort: It is about 1 hr 15 minutes from the Montego Bay Airport. I thought it was going to be very long and boring, but it wasnt bad. You get to see a lot of Jamaica. Also the bus is air conditioned and comfortable. The bus drivers ask if anyone "needs" anything (if you know what I mean) so they can pick it up for you on the way to the resort through the local towns. They also make a pitstop at a local bar so everyone can have a drink or use the restroom. You have plenty to look at on the way to the resort. There is poverty everywhere and animals running free everywhere. Very sad, but interesting.
Arrival to the resort: Upon arrival the check in was very slow. They tell you to leave your bags and go have a cocktail at the bar. That is ok, but if you want to check in right away, good luck!
Resort: Ok inside, not flashy, very casual.
The grounds howver are beautiful. Very Tropical.
Beach: Nice, clean water. Snorkeling is amazing right on the beach. No need to go out to the reefs. Saw just as much fish, probably more right on the beach. Hint:take bread with you and hold in in your fist. You can crumble the bread in the water and watch all the fish go into a frenzy! The water is warm and absolutely wonderful. Calm, great for swimming.
The beach is very windy though. I always felt as if sand was kicking up into my face. Less windy by the pool.
Food: The food is extremely repetative, but good. I was nervous about the food and water after going to Cancun, but I was fine! No problems in that area. The buffet has the same menu it seemed everyday. We tried the Italian Restauraunt which you need reservations for, and it too was ok. We also ate at the outside resteraunt which I think I liked the best.
The best food in the resort is the burgers on the beach!!!!!!! You must eat the burgers! Best burgers Ive ever had. I ate them everyday!
Rooms: They were clean, but smelt like smoke. A little musty but for the most part clean. Had a little issue with some tiny ants around the sink area, but it wasnt that bad. Ive run out of room, Email me if you have questions..also do the horseback riding on the beach. Well worth it! also Dunns River falls.
I had a nice time, but would not go back to runaway bay. Negril or Ochos Rios is your best bet if your looking for excitement and more to do. Nice place to go relax in quiet surroundings.
The customer waas never right
The resort is clean and the bar staff and activities people were fantastic. Top shelf booze for all. Rooms were clean but poorly maintained. We never had a patio door that locked we asked many time then just gave up. Our bathroom light was almost burned out to but that was no big deal. Just would have been nice to have them fixed.
Martinos was good
food however we sat down at 6:40 Pm and dinner took till 9:50.
The buffet was the same every night. We once had to wait 30 min for clean coffee cups. They ran out of the good food choices. The starlight grill was great could have eaten there every night.
Oh and all those inclusive water sports, just a little wind or a fine mist cancels them, but we saw other resort boats taking there folks out.
My biggest problem is the term (no problem) does not exist here anyone that complained was never right. That was the worst front desk staff I have ever seen. So all in all if you pay less then a grand for a whole package it is OK any more and you got screwed. This is basement vacationing.
No more seperclubs.
One week ago we retern from Breezes Runaway Bay. It was bad expirience. Some travel agents give them 5 stars rating but I can give them not more than three (?). First, we had the room at 5PM istead of 3PM. At every morning we had to hurry to get beach chears because they do not have enough for everyone. We spent 6 days there and every day it was a problem. Food was not bad for 3 star hotels. If we came later than 9.30AM there was not enough choice of food. So gays if you want 2-3 stars resort you are on the way.
Why Would I Want To Be Anywhere Else?
We just returned from Breezes Runaway Bay, our first trip to Jamaica-it was wonderful! I've never been anywhere where EVERYTHING was so perfect!
Maybe I'm getting a little carried away, as this was my first trip to Jamaica, but it was definitely the best week of my life.
My husband and I went with a group of 6 other people (singles and another couple all between 24-30). Breezes turned out to be a great mix of people and activities that everyone enjoyed.
The weather was gorgeous everyday. Unbelievable!
All of the food I had was wonderful. We ate at the buffet for breakfast every morning. Lunch was divided between the buffet and beach grill. For dinner, we ate at Martino's twice, the Starlight Grill (my favorite) twice and the buffet the rest of the time. While I enjoyed it all, there were a couple people in my group who didn't like everything they tried.
The entertainment crew (and staff overall) was top notch! They're so friendly and full of energy. I loved how they'd just start dancing or singing all the time.
We got involved in a lot of the games and activities, which were fun and the rest of the time was spent catchin' some rays on the beach or by the pool-with a drink in hand, of course!
I've read in several different places that the week we were there is considered "low season." I'd be really curious to know why-as the weather was perfect and the resort didn't seem "dead" by any means. I guess I don't have anything to compare it to though...
Off the subject of the resort a little, we also visited Dunn's River Falls-a must do-and Ocho Rios for shopping and a night at Margaritaville...all of which were great too!
Before we went to Jamaica, a friend who'd been there before, but couldn't come this time, kept saying we should all go back in a couple years and I kept thinking why would I want to do that? I'll go to Jamaica once and that's that-why would you want to keep going back to the same place? Now I know why...and I can't wait to return!
Thanks to everyone at Breezes for many wonderful memories and something to look forward to again in the future!

SSurprise Is Great -October 2002
Every year my group of 6 to 10 people plan a visit to Jamaica in October. This time we decided to stay at Breezes Runaway Bay October 2002. This place had great entertainment. The resort is beautiful and the staff were awesome. The resort was very clean and orgainzed. I couldn't beleive the standard rooms were large with beautiful bathrooms. The bed was a little on the hard side but after dancing and playing games...trust me, it wouldnt matter. The Terrence food was a little boring after the first day. Reason why I say boring, Breezes serve the same foods every day. I'm the type of person that need a vareity of foods. The Star Grill served a excellent dinner. The food is raw, then they cook it. I thought that was kind of cute. The beach grill kept running out of food which made me a little upset especailly if your not a breakfast person. I think it is well worth it if you purchase Super Surprise Package. This place had several age groups and everyone was friendly. The music was Awesome all day. The nude beach & juz was especially wonderful for people like me. I like no tan lines and the beach had a 24 hours security guards. Did I mention the nude beach area had a self serve bar. I thought that was kind of cute too. Next year I will be checking out Sandals in Negril. Lets see what they have to offer us. I will keep everyone posted. If you have any questions just email me Adelena1@Yahoo.com
Breezes Runaway Bay was a Wonderful Vacation
We just returned from Breezes Runaway Bay on Saturday. We were only there 8 days, but I felt like I could have lived there forever. The weather was perfect, the resort experience was tops, we all got what we wanted-- a chance to swim, sun and relax for our teen daughter and me, scuba certification for my husband. The beach is gorgeous, the Caribbean like a bathtub, with schools of yellow fish that rush to eat bread from your fingers. There are many water activites, recreational and entertainment options, the food and drink were bountiful, and the staff were wonderful. We went on the Dunn's River Falls trip, the horseback riding, and to Nine Miles, where Bob Marley was born and is buried, all very special in different ways. I have been to many different places in the world, and I think this was the best vacation I have ever had; truly a rejuvenating experience I will treasure forever. I hope we return. It was hard to leave.
Runaway Bay Experience
My husband and I traveled to Jamaica April 12- 19. We had purchased the supersurpise plus package, that saves you about $700 or more by allowing Superclubs to pick where you stay out of there many resorts. You have the option to delete one. We deleted Breezes Montego Bay due to its poor reviews and ended up at Breezes Runaway Bay. Superclubs will arrange for transportaion to and from the airport( fees already included in the package) so there is no cost to you later except for tips. The ride from Montego Bay to Runaway Bay was about 1 hour 20 min. Once you arrive you are greeted with champagne while getting checked in. They take your bags and immediately take them to your room. There is a "NO Tipping Allowed" policy in affect and they do remind the guest of this. Our room was nice and clean. Not really large but comfortable. We were on the second floor and had a patio door that led to our own private balcony with an obtructed view of the sea.
The food was good. You would never go hungry. Breakfast started at 7:30am-10:30am on the terrace (where most meals are sereved) which was buffet style. Made to order omlettes and waffles were also available. The beach grill opens at 11:30am-5:30pm where you can have unlimited hotdogs, burgers, jerk chicken, and fries. The Terrace would start serving lunch at 12:30-2:30pm which was buffet style. Dinner started at 6:30pm in Martino's the private Italian Restaurtant that did require a reservation with proper attire. The food in there was excellent and the service was great. If you wanted casual dining you could go to the starlight grill where only grilled foods were served. We never ate there d/t it always being full.Or you could dine on the terrace buffet style 7pm -9:30pm. If that was missed of you just got hungry they had a midnight buffet from 12am-1am and if you still needed nourishment that had snacks from 1am-4am. Drinks were unlimited and never tasted watered down. They had 3 bars to serve you. As I said early the service is great. We never ran across any employee that was anything but helpful and courtious. Their modo is "No Problem". The weather was nice. It only rained one night hard but by moringing you couldn't tell it rained. The is a nice breeze you get off the Sea so the 80+ degree temperatures don't bother you. Suncreen is A MUST. We never had to pay a penny for any food, drinks, watersports or any activity on the resort. They do offer excursions which are quite pricey. We were never bored. The entertainmaint dept does a nice job to prevent that. People ranged in age from 18 - 70+. They do have a nude beach and jacuzzi area which is near the clothed section but you really don't notice them. We can't wait to Breeze in again.
Breezes is great!
I returned from Breezes Runaway Bay in January. This was my 5th time staying there. It was truly wonderful! The beach is absolutely the "best" in Runaway Bay. The hotel rooms are ok, but the accommodations and the staff are TERRIFIC! The water sports staff is Great. However, the manager seems to constantly be "yelling" at them for no apparent reason. He needs to "chill". The entertainment staff works extremely hard. The piano bar is so much fun. The disco is a little boring. Anyway, I love Breezes. I'm going back in May AGAIN. I can't wait. One thing everyone should know is that is not a "COUPLES ONLY" resort, thank God! There are couples, but there are also singles.

Jesse and I traveled to Jamaica for the long anticipated wedding of Courtney and John Henry. This trip could not have come sooner - Jesse just recently recovered from viral meningitis so we were both ready for a vacation.

Woke up at 7am and chilled on the balcony while Sven was still sleeping. We went to breakfast at about 8 and afterwards went to the lobby. I didn't have much to do and I wanted to go swim so Sven stayed at the lobby while I went to the beach. I fed the fish again - I love being surrounded by Sergeant Majors! The morning was again cloudy, breezy but warm. I went snorkelling in the waters in front of the hotel. The beach water directly in front of the hotel is mostly reef so most of the beach sun bathers go to the long beach off to one side of the hotel. The reef has many colourful fish and the water is nice and warm so a good swim. Syl waded in as well but didn't snorkel. ...

We went on an excursion to St Ann, an area east of Montego Bay. Here we toured the Green Grotto Caves, a limestone cavern system near the north sea shore of the island. Our guide Chad was a humorous young man that teased us "yellow" people (Chinese) quite a lot, which was in good fun. We saw lots and lots of bats in these caverns, flying around as we listened to the guide talk about the place. Supposedly the Spanish governor of Jamaica hid in these caves and eventually fled to ...
