The cruise: an epic saga PART 3

A travel blog entry by mchawkrighttrip

The next day we got off in Rhodes, and we wandered around in the moat in between the two city walls (Yes, I do realize we do a lot of aimless wandering) eventually we found a way inside and we explored the cobblestone street and alley ways. The main tourist street or "Disney Land" as we liked to call it was bustling with lots of cruisers buying tacky things they don't need with money they don’t have. Although ...

We woke up to a sunny day and had ordered room service since
our tour started early, and after breakfast we headed to the theater to get our
bus tickets for our tour. The destination services are extremely organized; I have never been told in so many pleasant ways how to wait until our bus is called. They also know what tour you are heading to as you leave the theater and will very politely mention if you need a jacket or
long pants, based on where ...

... beer!! Perfect!!! We made our way down to the beach, ran into the biggest pack of cats yet, and took a little nap on a lounge chair by the sea. What a perfect day!!! Once we returned, we decided to stay in and has dinner at the hotel. Apparently Karen was exhausted and fell asleep rather quickly. Her body is now all accustomed to the time change, CJ on the other hand, is still going to sleep and waking up at random times. Sent from my ...

Last minute sun, before returning to the cold

Last day........
Felt a bit sad having breakfast, knowing that this time tomorrow we would be back home in cooler climes.
We had a few hours snorkelling and sunning at Tsampika beach, then on the drive back to the hotel we stopped at a good vista point for some last minute pictures.
Had a brief siesta on returning to the hotel, we have a horrible late night/early morning flight (kinda ...

    Deception!

    from pantoufle10

    Paradise

    from mag24

The Hotel was beautiful! I have never seen such unique and beautifully designed architecture. The rooms were really clean, everyday new towels, fresh sheets and the balcony views were breath taking. The staff of the hotel was extremely nice, everyone was very helpful and friendly, starting with the receptionist, even the cleaning ladies :) We had "all inclusive" passes, which allowed us to

    enjoy ourselves even more :)

The food was delicious, very elegantly made, everything really fresh and new specialties were served everyday! Some specialities for example, were "caviar" or "different types of cheeses" to taste one day. There was also a "snack bar" around the pool area, where you could eat traditional Greek food such as suvlaki or gyros :) Also, the waiters, cooks and chefs, as well as the Management were always very professional. Everyday coming down for dinners, we were greeted

with huge smiles and the feeling of being "at home" :) I really loved

the atmosphere there. Everything looked really "rich and elegant"

We went for a week and I have never been so relaxed as I have been on

    this vacation!

During the day, you could hang out around the pool area, go swimming in the sea (only few feet away) and bring your drinks with you everywhere you like :)The beaches are really clean and the water is crystal clear!

At night, there's always entertainment in the hotel, provided by very energetic animators. There are dance shows, games and activities

special for children and adults. Also, a huge bar opens at night, where you could sit, drink, and meet everyone else!

Lindos (the nearest town) is only about 3km away, and the little Greek white houses will once again take your breath away. During the day, walking around, you could shop, eat at the finest restaurants or tour a castle at the highest point either by walking up or riding a donkey :) During the night, the town turns into a party and there are many bars and little cafes one next to the other. Perfect for romanti dates or getaways! :) To get to Lindos you could either take

a bus (1 euro) during the day or a taxi at night (10 euros) or even hitchhike if you like, (the island people are extremely friendly )

Also, in Rodos we rented a car for one day (you can bargain to get the best price, either in the hotel or around, there are many car rentals) and tour the whole island. You could also rent a scooter or a four wheeler! The views are beautiful and there are many places to stop to see interesting things (for example, one town is known for its honey, another for great wine)

Also, there is a butterfly valley on the island but that depends on the month of being there, when we came (May), the butterflies were still in their cocoon state so we didn't see them.

The city Rodos is the main city on the island (about 40km away) and it's filled with tourists, as well as, the nice local Greek people. You could take a bus there (4euros one way). There are many stores there, restaurants, bars and clubs. Also, every morning at 8am you could take a boat from Rodos to Turkey or other Greek islands to either go shopping or touring (one of little islands of Rodos is known for making sponges)

I really enjoyed my time in Lindos Royal, I would recommend it to anyone: young, older, with children or looking for the perfect spot for their honeymoon. It's just gorgous up there, a true paradise!

Without a doubt, I would love to go back there again :) :) :)

    All show not much go.

Booked Lindos Mare via Airtours but weren't told it was closed; ended up in Lindos Royal - first guests over the doorstep of the new season and didn't it show. Beds not ready, no curtains, brown (and cold) hot water; hot buffet was stone cold for five nights out of seven. Food wasn't labelled so that was a bit of a lottery. Failed lights in corridor - not fixed all week despite bare wires showing!!. Air con. not working - AS IT IS NOT SWITCHED-ON UNTIL 16th JUNE - (POLICY) despite July heat (in May), guests slept with doors and windows open!!! Dress Code not adhered-to. BUT--super pool area, staff friendly, and helpful, pity the management wern't!!. Good Location, but bus stop 15mins walk, mainly up steep hill.(4.80 eu ret. to Lindos, 7.80 ret to Rhodes) Taxi 16 eu ret to Lindos. Big beach 10 mins walk nice beach bar/rest 10 mins. Apparently mainly Italian guests here and adjacent hotel in season (staff comments)

    Rilassante

    from sunnyclimates

    from AugustMM

Starvation in the middle of nowhere

    from himselfetc

Got dropped of by our tour coach at the Lindos Royal after a 3 hour transfer. Quite shocked to find out that our hotel was actually 6km from Lindos (a €15 return taxi fare).

Got to our room and killed 5 cockroaches in the first hour, complained and were given a 'junior suite' which was identical but with slightly less animal life.

Rooms are large and basic and beds are of poor quality, but cleaning staff are courteous and efficient. Air conditioning is not sufficient to cool the room.

No water on the second day of our trip as the pump supplying the hotel was broken. When it was eventually repaired the water was a dirty brown colour for a day afterwards and couldn't be used for washing.

Food was terrible and huge numbers of flies hovered over the buffets each breakfast and dinnertime. We had booked 1/2 board but couldn't bring ourselves to eat a meal in the place at all due to the flies. As a result we had to go into Lindos at least twice per day to eat. Adding at least €160 in taxi fares and €250 in meals to the price of our holiday.

The receptionist gave us the wrong departure time for the Rhodes-Marmaris ferry, and we missed it as a result. Wasting another €100 on car hire.

Pools are ok but invaded by children from a nearby hotel. Entertainment is in Italian only.

    Relaxing

    from sunnyclimates

had a great relaxing time - weather great - clean beach 5 mins from hotel - though hotel has plenty of pools to choose from with ample sun loungers - guests appeared to be majority of italians - only met one other english party staying there - but staff were friendly and made you welcome especially the inside bar near reception (amusing members of staff there kept us entertained)

stayed half board - good choice of breakfast - though on a couple of occasions the cereal/yoghurt serving areas appeared to suffer with a few flies buzzing around - evening meal had a special served each evening together with a pleasant selection of other foods and desserts.

lindos a 10 min drive away - taxi only cost 14 euros there and back - so not too expensive to get out and about once in a while - as didn't feel entertainment was that brilliant - what little they did have was based on the italians there so couldn't understand what was going on anyway

rooms cleaned every day and cleans towels each day too

would love to go back soon

Good basic hotel with nice amenities.

    from AugustMM

This hotel is very clean. The room was very spacious containing a double bed and a sofa bed. It had a two ring cooker, sink and fridge unit. Our room was on the ground floor so we had no problems with access or getting to the pool like the previous reviewer. The room was serviced daily and towels were replaced every day.

The hotel seems to have a lot of rooms. We paid 90 Euros per night for a double room.

It is about 5Km to Lindos. We had a hire car so the bus/taxis were not an issue for us.

It is about 5 minutes walk from reception to the beach which was lovely. There is also a lovely little cove/beach near the swimming pools which was absolutley gorgeous.

There are 4 or 5 pools.

Overall I would recommend this hotel.

We only ate breakfast in the hotel which was fine.

    4Star hotel

    from anonymous

The rooms were clean and spacious, was definately a 4 star in Greece. The food was ok and the staff were friendly. Was glad that I stayed there rather than Lindos as not very child friendly. only 6 Euros in a cab.

90% Italians, 5% english 5% German. Very Very friendly though.

    A bit of a disappointment

    from anonymous

The brochure looked better then the reality. The furniture and beds in the room were very tired, but the room was large. The air conditioning in the room was fairly useless because it was so large.

The pool was excellent and very clean. The hotel was generally clean and tidy, but the minimalist effect made the whole hotel feel very impersonal. My wife suggested it was like an air raid shelter.

One lift, out of two, stayed out of action 13 of the 14 days we were there. The one that worked was none too dependable. The corridor lights were never fixed and we were forced to walk about 30m in complete darkness to get to our room every night.

The exit from the hotel to the pool was through the basement service tunnel, past the kitchen extractors and the binstore window. There were some interesting odours to walk through. Althoigh we don't speak Greek, it wasn't too hard to work out what the shouting in the kitchens was about.

The next door hotel was full of Italians who invaded the pool area as their's became too busy. This generally resulted in hordes of screaming children in and around the pool with no rules, respect for others or any need to worry about it. Their parents were worse. We complained to the management and they stopped coming, but for how long?

The brochure advertised "entertainment" and an "Animation team". The entertainment is sporadic, and poor in quality. We had Fillipo on organ and his blonde singer warbling popular hits twice, kids karaoke 9 - 11pm, and a kids dancing contest. The animation team consisted of a young couple. The girl organised things like water polo, yoga, water aerobics, etc and left the participants to it. The guy operated the karaoke machine. We had to go to Lindos 12 of the 14 nights to entertain the boys. (Its a 15 euro round trip).

The bus stop at the hotel only has 2 buses a day. The one half a mile up the hill in 35 degrees has buses every half hour to Lindos or Rhodes.

The good things. The food was great. The hotel was less than half full. The staff were great, and very friendly. Go on Capt. Stergos' Lazy day from the main beach. Turn up at 9:30 for 10am. Taxi drivers are very scary, but they get you there.

We enjoyed the break. It should have been much better for the money we paid. The boys were often bored because there was nothing for kids to do in the hotel.

Whatever the weather forecasts say, add 5 degrees for the Lindos factor. It was very hot and stayed hot. We got a taxi back from Lindos after the Euro 2004 final and the temperature showed 33 degrees at midnight. It had been 44 during the day. WE didn't get a great tan, it was too hot to sit out. We stayed under the brollies most of the time.
