Swimming with Dolphins

Sven got to see dolphins twice in this trip. The first time was at a children's "pet the dolphin"Dolphin Quest activity that they have at the Hilton in Waikoloa. The hotel is one of the most ridiculous things we've seen (more on that later), but the kids got to pet and feed the dolphins, as well as get a lesson about sea mammals. The dolphins are actually Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, as they are better adjusted to the shallow pool where the activities take place. A couple of days later, Sven...

A nice day

We slept and woke up. What a surprise?  It was a bit tough but I convinced myself that sleeping was better than getting up early. It was a good choice. We opted for room service for breakfast and it was worth it. The service was fast and the food good. The prices were room service. Then we ventured out to find the Foodland. It was an interesting trip scenery-wise. I am not used to the volcanic wastelands. It just looks so different. Kind of like a desert but with more stuff growing and some g...

I am tired

It has now been a long day of travel. Hurry up and wait has been the phrase for the day. We spent far too long in LAX. But the flights were smooth and no complications. When we finally got to the hotel first impressions are outstanding. Very friendly front desk staff. The monorail is a lot slow. We may have to reserve judgement on that aspect. Our room is suite or I should say our room is a suite. I am not sure what a regular room is like but the comfort makes up for the time to get here. And...

On the Big Island of Hawaii

They say "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.....". Well, SHAME ON ME !!! For the second time this week, I typed an epic travel blog entry into the text box on the Travelpod web page, only to press enter and find that I had lost my wireless connection. I was left staring horrified at the dreaded "Page cannot be displayed" screen, my cursor hovering over the "Back" button but afraid to click it........ Of course, the entire entry was lost and I am now retyping this safely i...

Just became a Raiders fan....

Well, there are good vacation days, there are great vacation days and then there are days when 20 NFL cheerleaders park themselves next to you on the beach for the day. Yesterday was one of the latter !! The Oakland Raiderettes are here shooting their 2010 calendar and they spent the day on the beach right next to our spot..... they posed for a couple of pictures for Diane and all had very nice personalities :-)))) Honestly, it is hard to force ourselves to leave this resort to do any touring...

Day 3: Standing on top of the world

Our first day on the Big Island, and no travel to worry about...through the air, that is. We planned to travel by car to the highest point in Hawaii, the summit of Mauna Kea volcano. Coming in at just under 14,00 feet, it would be the highest that any of us have ever ascended into the sky with our feet on the ground. In fact, Mauna Kea is actually over 30,000 feet high if measured from its' base, making it technically the tallest mountain in the world. Our goal was to travel to the Visitor In...

The Big Island, Hawaii

So, before heading off to Istanbul, why not go on a family vacation? Dad and us girls (Cathie, Miki and me) went to Kona for a 4-day tropical getaway. I had never been to the Big Island before so I was looking forward to some relaxing fun in the sun and maybe some volcano action. The Hilton is a super fancy resort type hotel, the kind that takes 10 minutes to get from your room to the front desk! The best part was the lagoon pool with the waterslide...! oh, and the malasadas with the cream fi...

Getting to Hawaii

Flew with my mom to Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii for 3 days. The flight from Chicago was 9 hours and we sat in middle row aisle seats in the last two rows of the plane, but hey, we were on the plane! Time passed smoothly and I barely missed winning the "Guess the midpoint" contest. I guessed 10:47 Hawaii time and the actual time was 10:48 and some seconds. There were 3 people that were ahead of me I guess. We stayed at the Hilton Waikoloa located 17 miles from the Kona airport on the Big ...

Fun Run

Hawaiian Honeymoon

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I vacationed here for the first five nights of our Hawaiian honeymoon. What an excellent experience. The grounds are breathtaking. We particularly enjoyed the hammocks by the ocean during the sunset. With innumerable pools and jacuzzis we were never crowded and always had room to relax. The saltwater lagoon provided excellent opportunities for snorkeling in calf water. The staff was very willing and able to make our planned activities possible. Because the Hilton has wonderful resturants, shops, and adventures you wouldn't have to leave if you didn't want to!!! Overall it was absolutely wonderful, KUDOS to the Hilton staff. We will DEFINATELY come back!!

No Longer a Jewel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
I was Extremely disappointed with my overall experience at the Hilton Waikoloa Village in August. Having grown up in Hawaii, I can state that this hotel was once a prized jewel, but I did not see anything on my recent trip that would suggest it still was.

The grounds were very nice and it would be hard to find a fault with the overall attractiveness of the property....BUT

When someone is spending a lot of money for a so-called 4 star mega resort, it is the little things that count. My wife and I ordered room service and when we were finished, placed the tray outside of the room and called to have it picked up. Several calls later, the tray was removed at NOON the next day. This was not only a pain to step around but we even notified the hotel that their was a large roach and a field mouse by the tray when we opened the door(no kidding). GROSS and totally unnacceptable for a hotel of this type. We ordered room service several days later and had the same experience as the tray once again was not picked up until NOON the following day. As room service ends at Midnight, would it be too much to ask to have someone pick up any trays in the hall at 2am.

My room was charged several days for valet parking when I had not used the valet. This also is not a big deal except that my room was billed for valet my first two nights when I parked the car myself and had never been to the valet stand. I contacted the front desk to have this corrected and noted that it had NOT been removed upon our check out. I decided not to continue to pursue the $16 if the hotel needed it that bad.

Each and every night, the miniature golf course closed early by 2-3 HOURS. Many people brought their kids over to play a round before dinner and were unable. Not a big deal, but it left a lot of children disappointed. My neighbor in the hotel actually gave a father and his upset kid a putter and ball out of his own golf bag so they could play a round.

In general, this resort was completely understaffed and the staff that was there no longer exuded the pride that they use to have for this property.

I would not stay at this hotel again, and would add that other members of my family have stayed at the Waikoloa and have commented on the declining service as well.

Beautiful

from monkey
We just returned from a 4 night stay at this wonderful resort, but we have both positive and negatives things to say, I guess the negative is more on the cost of things. The dolphins are terrific to watch and seem they very happy but cost alot if you want to actually touch or play with them. There is a $17.50 Resort fee to use any of the play things around the pool along with a few other things that should be included in the room rate. The restaurant food is good but very pricey and can add up quickly to make a rather large bill. Room service was very efficient but came to $62 for 2 for a basic breakfast. The lagoon is great but could use some more fish in it. The art, the atmosphere, the surroundings are wonderful. The room we had was in the lagoon tower was nice but it did face a white unattractive roof, none of the other towers seem to do this. The boats and train that run through the property are excellent with only a short wai. for either, as well as walking which is easy and enjoyable by wonderful works of art. The pools are great for kids as well as adults with a fun water slide. The staff was generally excellent. The spa seemed well equiped but way over priced with a 50 min massage going for $110.

Great Resort for Kids of all Ages!

from A TripAdvisor Member
For years I avoided this resort thinking it was just too massive and Disneyland-like for my tastes. I now know I was missing out. Well, if you've got kids, stay at this hotel. There are children of all ages everywhere. It's very family oriented. I found the hotel, grounds and room to be in excellent shape and the service was superb. Although my 16-month old was too young for Camp Menehune (kids camp), he was plenty happy. One end of the Kona pool is set up for toddlers and my son had a blast! The Hilton offers a plethora of free activities including hula dancing, a petroglyph hike and stargazing (I was surprised as I expected the hotel to charge for everything). Check out the calendar of events that is in your room when you check in. I did not want to leave when it was time to return home because I hadn't taken advantage of everything the hotel offered. I'm already planning my next stay and I don't want to wait until next summer.

A greek palace or a hotel?

from A TripAdvisor Member
a couple years ago my best friend and I stayed here and all I have to say is WOW! We were in awe of the massiveness and the beauty of this resort. I honestly thought that we were in some kind of greek palace! It was amazing! And the odd thing was that the "Big Island" itself was a mass of lava rock, but the resort was like a gigantic oasis amidst the rock. It was like being in your own little world with wonderful food, and plenty to do for everyone. We snorkled, watched the dolphins, lounged around, hung out in the hot-tub at night, and just explored the hotel. The rest of that trip we stayed at the Westin Hotel in Mauii, which was pretty, but did not even compare. We said by going to the Hilton at Waikoloa Village we had spoiled ourselves. I dont think anything will ever compare! So go and be amazed!!

Hilton Waikoloa

from A TripAdvisor Member
Before we departed for our 16 day Hawaiian vacation in March

2002, I read the review of Anonymous, LA, Calif, 12/2001 and was quite concerned.

Six of our nights were spent at the Hilton Waikoloa. It was wonderful. Something to do for all ages. Staff was very friendly and service was very good.

Getting a Pina Colada or Lava Flow at the poolside was never a problem. Our server was very efficient. However, be prepared to pay high prices for meals and drinks at the resort. Entree prices range from mid $20's to mid $40's depending on which restaurant you choose.

Poolside drinks were around $8.50, compared to $5.50 outside the resort.

Roy's at Wailkoloa would be a good alternative. Great food and easier on the pocketbook.

Also, be prepared to walk or wait a lot. The resort is spread out over 62 acres. Rooms can be a 10 minute walk from one side of the resort to the other. You can take a tram or boat. The tram was running on an every 15 minute schedule. It was usually more convenient to walk.

If you are staying in the Ocean Center, as we did, the building is designed in three connected circles opened in the inside. Elevators were not close to our room. We mostly used the stairs. Since we were on the 6th floor, the step training came in great for out ascent to the top of Diamond Head Crater in Honolulu later in our trip.

My wife had no problem scheduling a spa experience. She recommends the Cocoa-Mango wrap. It was excellent. Cost was $150.

Overall, it was a very good experience. In fact, I would like to be there right now.

This place is paradise

from A TripAdvisor Member
The service (despite what the psycho in LA wrote) is exceptional and it is a journey that you will never forget. As far as I'm concerned it is the best vacation place in the world. I'll be going on my third trip there in a few weeks. Book a night! Book several nights! There is no other resort like this in Hawaii! Heaven has been Hilton-ized.

Great Place for Families to Stay

from A TripAdvisor Member
We just returned from the Hilton Waikoloa. It is a beautiful hotel. Our boys loved the Kona Pool with the waterfall and slide. The grounds are gorgeously landscaped. It truly makes you feel like you are in paradise. You won't be disappointed. We recommend staying in the Lagoon Tower which is close to the Kona Pool. Make reservattions in advance for Dolphin Quest. You can cancel later if you don't want to do it, but you may not be able to get in when you arrive without reservations. The restaurants are expensive, but there are most reasonably priced restaurants at the Kings Village Shops down the street.

Woe is Hilton Waikola

from A TripAdvisor Member
Sadly, this once grand resort seems to have fallen on hard times. The truly spectacular grounds are still here, so are the dolphins. What's missing? It seems (according to the staff) about half of the hotels employees have been laid off.

What does this mean for the luxury traveler? Want a drink by the pool? We waited thirty minutes for a waitress to appear and then forty-five for the drink. Want a special request from room service like the hotel used to provide? No longer available. "Order from the menu!" the woman curtly said.

Want a massage? Sorry, the understaffed spa is booked for days. Want lunch by the magnificent Kona pool? Good luck -- only two waitresses service an area that must hold five hundred people.

Hope the dolphins are getting fed.

Fantastic
