Along the Yukon River

... Riverboat that had navigated the Yukon river from Whitehorse to Dawson City is now a museum. There is an international airport here, but it is rather small. They have an airplane mounted up high which is so perfectly positioned, that it is used as a wind vane. It shifts at the slightest change in the wind. There aren't too many TV channels where we are. Two of ...

Catch-up Day in Whitehorse

... The Canadians charge a deposit on almost all kinds of drink containers (milk jugs, juice bottles, and, of course, beer and soda cans and bottles). The only picture we have for today is the Whitehorse welcome sign and flowers. Jim wanted to take pictures of Jane washing the coach in her butt-floss bikini, but she hid the camera.

The coach and car got fueled up. Tomorrow we leave the Alaska Highway just 8 ...

We stopped at the Nisutlin Bay Bridge, the longest water span on the Alaska Highway, to take pictures and in the town of Teslin, the Yukon Wildlife Gallery. The displays of Northern species were phenomenal!

Much of this area is critical habitat for migrating watefowl in spring. The bird-watching must be spectacular as Northern pintail, canvasback, American wigeon, goldeneye ...

Bad Roads Ahead

... he does tidy up as he goes but sometimes right at the end of preparations, things may stack up. I get to clean those along with our dinner dishes. Often, we use paper plates….especially if we’re dry camping but when we have water & electricity hookups, we both prefer the real thing. Regardless of our situation, we always have cloth napkins. Wendell detests paper and I don’t care either way; they’re washable and we have plenty.

FROST WARNING FOR WHITEHORSE

... around in a tiny little parking lot) to a street leading back to highway 1. This was the beginning of the cell phone/computer blackout and the road to Banff National Park. Breathtaking views at every turn and lots and lots of other travelers. We dry camped at Lake Louise. There were three bears hanging out in the neighborhood, so we were instructed to stay close to camp with the dogs. Tent area has an electric fence ...

Mid winter report

... Young Alex Harvey (Pierre's son), and George Grey got onto the podium in the team sprint an exciting race with an even more exciting finish. While we were away, the Whitehorse temps went up to +10 (new record high) causing the snow to ice up and roads to get really icy. We arrived home to less snow but warmer temps and a long term forecast of regular temps with daytime highs of -13C, one heck of a lot better than the -30s of the past month. Of course the snow was ...

Lone Dancing in Eagle Plains

... it, read it and got tears in my eyes. He knew me, saw right through me into my heart. "To the far places my soul has reached... Keesha and Laura lone dancing across the land. Shadows meet touch at an eagle plain...a spirit stirs. Follow the heart not the head. Given illumination gone out, now illumination I may receive...around the next bend, beyond the next course, Keesha, Laura ride their horse. I am looking for my heart ...

... Dust covers the road. It's like a while out. Curve ahead. Slow down. It's dirt with potholes. Bump bump. Straight road. Aaah...Look at that view. No don't look. Stop if you want to look. I stop and take video and photos. This is incredible beauty. So vast. Hill ahead. Oh my god, slow down Laura. It looks like I'm going to drive of the edge of the world. Downhill. I wouldn't even want to ski this. Bumpity bumpity bump. Tanker truck. Dust ...

Kluane National Park and Kluane Lake, Yukon

... where we saw a couple of campers suddenly shed their clothes and take a dip. It had to be VERY cold, as the lake is surrounded by snow-covered mountains. We moved on to Kluane Lake, a very long and gorgeous glacial-fed lake. There we camped at a park that produces its own electricity with large generators---they even had WiFi there!

... blocked and sewage went everywhere. The worst of it was the campground owner could care less and would do nothing to solve the problem. We are scheduled to be back here on our way home. I may go somewhere else. Tomorrow is a short day, only 200 miles to Tok, Alaska. Saturday we will head for Fairbanks where we will be for about four days before we head to Denali!
