Not worth it.
The food was not that great. Meat and seafood were tuff. Some stuff was ok. The beach was great and people were friendly. Service at the hotel not so good. We had a few things wrong and it took a couple of days to fix. Our room was not ready and was booked well in advance. Were promised a upgrade, but never recieved. If you go anywhere have plently of cash or travelers checks. If you go shopping be prepared to really be bothered especially in the craft market. This was our first time here. If we come back to Jamaica, we will stay in Montego Bay and not do the all inclusive. We will go out on our own.
Too expensive for luxury
We were very shocked when we seen our room very dated for luxury bathroom was old tile very bad I totally agree this would not pass Super 8 at home. The beach was beauitful only 10 second walk from our room. I cannot beleive this is a 5 star resort who rates these the locals? Im sure how they live this is luxury. I would call the Manaday Bay in Las Vegas luxury. OR a cruise anywhere. we definately over paid. we went with a couple who won their trip noticed quite a few couples won free trip. Live and Learn. THink Twice before you go.
No Problem Mon
We just got back from 6 Days at the resort. The staff was unbelievably nice. The food was great. The drinks were never ending. The 24 hour room service was prompt, and the food was always both delicious and presented well. Man champagne delivered to the room every morning, within 10 minutes of calling. Napoleon Brandy on the beach. Cuban cigars ( the only thing I paid extra for in a week). This was the MOST decadent week of my life. The clothing optional beach was groomed each morning. The guests were a sociable, but not in your face. The nightly shows were fun with great music, and lots of group participation. The Disco on Thursday night was wild, with some outlandish Pajama Party costumes. It was simply one of the best weeks that my wife and I have had in 29 years of marriage.
Now the only NEGATIVE comment. Some how the SuperClubs site had my online reservation linked to "Sun and Fun Travel". If those folks are still in business you could fool me. I never got a response to any of 5 emails sent to them. They never sent me my travel vouchers. They never answered questions about airline reservations. Their 800 number was dicconnected. Their local (TX) number overflowed in voice mail. In short I can't believe they still exist! I had to finally call SuperClubs and ask them to send a copy of my travel voucher via FAX to me. They (SuperClubs) did so promptly, and from that point forward it was "No Problem Man". If you go, plan on having the trip of a lifetime.
Good But Be Informed
The Grand Lido Negril has a lot of positives, but people who are considering going there, especially honeymooners, should know about 2 problems. The first is that the buildings and rooms are nowhere near "luxurious." The second is that the main wedding ceremony sites are in or near the nude beach!
Our room was a major disappointment. The bathroom was old and dark, the grout was dirty and overall was very unpleasant. The rest of the room was cleaner but very outdated and looked cheap. I tell you with 100% accuracy that I've stayed in nicer Comfort Inns and Motel 6's.
This might not be so bad except that you expect a lot more given the price, the description of "luxurious," that it's labeled a 5-star resort and that it's supposed to be the top of the line resort for this chain. With this type of billing, we were very disappointed with the rooms and the buildings comprising the resort. We spoke to 2 other couples who were also getting married there, and both of the other women said they were disappointed with their rooms. The condition of the place was a big let down for all of us.
Aside from the location, the scenery and the ocean, it is NOT the romantic, pretty place that most honeymooners would expect. It was so bad that I went and complained to the manager, so we were shown other rooms to choose from but they were all the same. Finally, the person said they had 1 room that had been remodeled and showed it to us. This room was better and had a newer bathroom, so we took it. But even in this remodeled room, the bathroom floor flooded becuase the water ran off the unlevel edges of the tub and you couldn't take a shower w/o soaking the bathroom. Also, the A/C unit dripped and made noises throughout our stay b/c the staff was unable to fix the problem.
To be fair, let me reiterate that there are a lot of positives. The buffet food was very good and the restaurant food was excellent. The nightly entertainment was also very good. Overall service was very good. The main beach is really nice w/ a lot of sand, warm clear water and the ocean is very gentle. You can have mixed drinks and beer at ANY time of the day or night (yes, you can walk down to the bar at 3:00 a.m. and get whatever you want).
**** But there is a VERY important fact that would-be honeymooners should know in advance. If you're planning on getting married at the resort, please note that the wedding gazebo is right in the middle of the nude bathing area (no kidding) and another wedding site is on the edge of the nude bathing area. Trust me, this is not the setting your fiance imagined for that special day. We were upset upon seeing the layout, so we went back the next day to see if there was a different route to the gazebo. As we're walking down the path toward the gazebo at the waters edge, there was a 50-60 year old man laying naked in a lawn chair with his legs spread open facing the walkway. This is the point where I went to the manager to complain about the room and the wedding location. The manager didn't seem to think there would be a problem, but did allow me to choose any other location on the resort for our ceremony.
So in summary, this is not the pretty, luxurious resort you would probably want for a wedding or honeymoon, but overall the food, the service and the location were great.
Service, service and more service
We picked the Grand Lido after carefully researching hotels on tripadvisor and other web sites.
Strongly recommend Air Jamaica's direct flight from east coast cities. After an uneventful 1 and half hour bus ride from MoBay, we were greeted with champagne by the solicitous staff and shown to our ocean front room.
Attractive if somewhat dated decor, king size bed, love seat and chair, satelite tv, radio w/ CD player. While comfortable not luxurious and everything could of used a coat of paint. The grounds themselves are quite beautiful, occupying one half moon shaped bay just outside of Negril's seven mile stretch. Two pools, one clothing optional, two beaches. The beaches are as beautiful as any in the Caribbean, plenty of water sports, six bars open 24 hrs a day, and always lots and lots of food!!!
Very solicitous staff, always at your disposal for a drink or a joke.
Cons-mediocre beach service, no pool side bar on the clothing side, decor seems slightly out of touch with the times.
Would recommend seeing the sunset at Rick's cafe.
Grand Lido, Negril - Fun place, but not expect luxury
We went to GLN for our honeymoon and stayed for one week. It was nice and we had a lovely time, but probably because we hadn't been on a vacation in 5 years and almost ANYTHING would have met our expectations. The resort was clean, the beach was beautiful and the staff was pleasant. The resort only allows guests over 16 years old, which was great for us - a nice quiet stay with no screaming kids to ruin our week. One side of the resort is "clothing optional," but we never ventured over there, so can't really comment on it. We had one of the luxury rooms, which was very nice -two TVs, two bathrooms, king-size bed, private hot-tub, balcony, mini-bar w/ fridge, etc. The food was OK - room service consisted of a few snack choices -hamburgers, nachos, etc. Most regular meals were buffet style, but there were usually plenty of entree choices and I was always able to find something I liked. The drinks were awful - I hardly drank at all (other than beer or wine) because the mixed drinks and daquiris were basically made with crushed ice and cool-aid - no fruit in them at all! The spa services were OK, but I could tell that the manicurist/masseuse was not a trained professional. Overall we had a nice time simply relaxing and enjoying the beach, but for the price that we paid, I think we could've had a much more luxurious stay somewhere else.
I've been around the world; here's some advice
I just returned from the Grand Lido Resort in Negril, Jamaica. The wife and I were there for 1 week. Due to work related stress, we were in severe need of a nice, tropical, worry free vacation. I've been most places throughout the Caribbean and Mexico with the exception of what it's natives call "The heart of the Caribbean", Jamaica. Before I booked the trip, I read all the reviews I could find on the country. After careful consideration, we decided on this resort.
We arrived and the check in was customary. Our room was a beachfront suite which was above average. Special clothes hangers, his/her robe and slippers, loveseat, couch, King bed, nicely "positioned" mirror, were all nice touches. We were placed on the nude side, which was a first for us. It's seems a little out of the ordinary at first, but after a couple of days, and plenty of alcohol, it's "no problem mon". This side of the beach is beautiful. The resort has plenty of watersport activities to keep you busy. The weather was perfect all week and it was extremely hot. The people are terrific. The resort management stresses no tipping, but from time to time we tipped anyway, especially when we recieved room service 24 hours.
That brings me to the food....Now as far as room service goes, it's more geared toward casual meals like hamburgers, nachos, excellent buffalo wings, and desserts, foods typical of American grill and bar type restaurants. It's perfect for a minight snack. Both my wife and I agreed that this was the best food we've ever had at an all inclusive resort. As a matter of fact, our meal at the French restaurant, Piacere, was fantastic. It was a five course meal. I had Filet Mignon, and honestly, it was as good as any filet I've ever had in the States, or anywhere!!! My wife agreed. I do not have a big appetite, however, I ate more on this trip than any vacation I've ever taken in my life. Mainly because it's all-inclusive, drink and eat all you want!!! The Italian restaurant is very good, as well as Cafe Lido serving continental cuisine. Throw in the breakfast and lunch buffets and you have a feast. The food will suit any taste.
The landscape is mature with gazebos for spa treatments overlooking the ocean throughout. There was always a gentle breeze. We took 2 naps in the very comfy hammocks overlooking the cliffs. We played tennis, had manicures, pedicures, steam room, and more...all included. You'll never fet bored in 7 days here. We took a trip to the town with a cab driver. Be prepared to be hustled by everyone just like all of the other islands. If you tell them no, it's always "No problem mon!". We bought a few things...the cab driver was very helpful. Actually, he was more than a cab driver, he escorted us through the shopping villages. We made so many friends there. By the time we left, most of the staff knew us by our first name.
On a negative note, we missed a bottle of men's cologne and women's perfume on the last night, as well as our shampoo and conditioner. There were safe deposit boxes in the rooms where I kept all of our money, passports, and valubles. However, we advise to be careful here, as with any island you travel to, as they are typically all very poor areas. My wife is a salon model for hair, so the shampoo was a big issue to her. Jamaican hair products don't fit the bill for hair care, even though they do provide complimentary hair products, and also have a salon on site. Just be careful & use the safe deposit box. This WILL NOT keep us from going back!!!
When arriving into Montego Bay, we did take the small flight on TIMAIR for $60 to Negril. It took 15 minutes, as opposed to a 2 hour bus ride. It's a small 4 seat plane. I got to be the co-pilot. My wife refused to do this again even though we arrived safe!!! We rode the bus coming back for the scenery. It was not bad at all like some people say, just a bit bumpy 3 or 4 times. And we took some great pictures.
There was a disco on site and lots of entertainment on site. It's a big party if you want it to be. If you like quiet, your wish can be true as this resort has about 28 acres. If you really like to party, Hedonism is across the street, and you are welcome to participate in their activities. But proceed with caution....it appears anything, I mean anything goes!!!

Nice, but pricey
My wife and I just returned from a 2 week honeymoon to GLN. While it was very nice, and as others have commented th staff was awesome, and no tipping makes life easy, there are a few things to be aware of. We initially had
a Jr. Suite on the beach, which was quite simply not clean enough. It had mildew stains on the couch and the bathroom was just plain and simple, and could use an update. It was not horrible, but simply not what was expected for such an
expensive holiday. Halfway through we upgraded to a Luxury Suite, the big daddy of all rooms for an additional $3000. While this room was much cleaner and nicer, it (as all of the Lux. Suites are) was situated right next to the main road, with the airport right across the street! As the bedroom windows are wooden slats, you can hear a person sneeze from across teh street. Luckily we were early risers! It just makes no sense that the nicest rooms are so very loud (the Jr. was quiet as could be, down the beach and away from the roads). Again, I found the staff to be awesome, and the food was prety good, but not nearly enough seafood for my liking, being on an island I expected shrimp and lobster...saw very little of that. And beware the
room service menu, its like ordering from your local bar, burgers, potato skins and nachos...not what I would expect for a $10,000 holiday. Overall I would rate this
experience as a 4, but mainly because I love Jamaica and the people there, not so much for the resort, which gets a 3 only because of the prices.
The Grand Lido Negril was fantastic! Our wedding was wonderful. Our photos were just okay but the video was really good. We had two additonal couples with us who also loved this place. The staff was friendly and helpful. The food was great. If we return it would be in February instead of May as the rainy season has started. It was terribly hot and muggy causing too many hungry bugs but we were having so much fun we didn't really mind. Look for Captin Philipe and his "no problem mon" crew. He took us all over Jamaica and was a great guide. I hope to go back next year. I recommend flying from Mo Bay to Negril and back again. The road was flooded and very slow on our return trip. We could not fly back due to bad weather. Its worth the extra to fly and its a beautiful but short trip.
Want to go back ASAP!
Bottom Line: My husband and I spent 7 nights at the Grand Lido Negril and we don't have a desire to go anywhere else except back (and are currently booking for our one year anniversary trip). The food is incredible, with so much variety to choose from. The waiters, waitresses, bartenders, etc. are so kind and helpful and wonderful! The beach is breathtaking! If you get a chance, book Captain Philipe, tour guide, who docks his blue pontoon boat on the Grand Lido beach. He will take you for a sunset cruise down the whole west coast of the island or you can take a car tour with him to see the "real" Jamaica. Tip: Forget Dunns River Falls. Visit Mayfield Falls, which is always less crowded!

Sunday started well and we took a pedal boat out to see if we could see any fish ! The sea is very clear and we did see some big starfish but otherwise no fish! As usual Rob then went out on the Cat. But whilst he was out at sea the weather hanged and a storm was brewing! Amazingly he was sensible enough to come back to land before it rained! The rest of the day ...
... slower and stop! I think we've got to between the last 2!!! We now have our own personal waiter who totally looks after us and grovells to our every need for the hope of a dollar here and there! His name is Super Mario!!! Tonight we tried out the Italian restaurant which was excellent and we'll go there again, there are 4 speciality restaurants here. It was Reggae night so singing and dancing to a live group and yet more Bob Marley!! Yeh Man!!! Hope everyone ok ...
... now complete as Pete ha snow connected the camera up in the cattle shed and we can watch everything that is going on as clear as a bell!! Last night we saw the tail end of the Caesarian that had to be performed !! Quite weird watching your own cattle so far away!!! Yes Rod you guessed it ! He found the heart!! Must go our annual constitution of a walk up the beach awaits before we relax by the sea I the sun. ...

The last hotel I stayed at in Negril was Negril Beach Club Hotel.... It was awful!!! The rooms were dirty, the bathroom was gross, our water broke when we were there, there weren't enough towels, the sheets were gross. It was really far down the beach. Just overall a bad hotel. At the same time I guess I got what I paid for, it was a cheap hotel for one night. I would not stay there again.
